Setting goals and targets is the easy part of personal development and self growth. One of the most difficult things to do in life is to remain focused on our set goals. This usually determines our levels of success. I always set my self targets and goals on a monthly basis but, I must mention that not until recently did I discover the formula for staying focused. It is pointless in life to set targets that we do not intend to achieve neither is it beneficial to us, it is a share waste of time and effort. Remember effort is energy use your energy wisely. A tip when setting targets is that you must make sure that you set targets that are realistic and achievable.
Why set targets?
You may ask why set targets? They help us achieve our desired dreams and goals. Life is growth and growth is change. For one to have meaningful growth one needs a properly planned and executed plan. I believe that targets are the guiding maps towards the attainment of our intended purpose’s in life. I use my targets as a measure towards the achievement of my intended goal see related article. I will be very honest with you that not all targets I have set have been realistic and achievable, but over the years I have learnt to give my self targets and goals that are actually realistic and achievable. I still have though, some targets that I have been carrying over for sometime and are yet to be attained.
Setting targets helps me gauge the level and speed at which I am moving towards the attainment of my desired goals. But remember that Personal Development is not a competition. Never compete with anyone in your quest for personal growth.
Stick to your plan
Setting targets is the easier part of personal growth, staying focussed and sticking to them is the hard part. Once you have set out your intended purpose in life start working towards it. Do not wait until you have a clear picture cause it will never be clear until you start working on it. The more you work your plan the clearer it becomes. You will be encouraged to stick to your plans as you set realistic and achievable targets. It really feels good when you set your self a target and have achieved it. Yes there will be some conditions that we will encounter that are negative to us but always remember that all conditions and experiences that come to us are for out benefit. We gain strength in proportion to the effort expended.
Encourage yourself everytime you drift away from your plan by reminding yourself that to live is not a blessing but to live well. “An unexplained life is not worth living” just “as an unplanned life is not worth examining”. I believe that unless we have a plan for our lives, we don’t know what we are trying to achieve. There is great reward in planning our lives and sticking to our plans.
You are unique. You ought to do what no one can do. Your destiny is not predetermined. You create your own destiny every day, not by chance but by choice. Destiny is an achievement. Yes you come across bad situations, just know that there is always good even in bad situations. We can train our selves to see good and to do good in the darkest moments of our lives.
While some people just want to get by, you must choose to thrive. You must have an understanding of contentment and happiness in order to achieve inner peace. Staying focussed on your goals will ensure that you live a happy life. This is because you will be doing what you enjoy most in your life. A well lived life is not an accident. It is hard work. Be honest with yourself and know the difference between your needs and your wants. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.
