The capability of conscious choice and decision and intention; is called the will; “the exercise of their volition we construe as revolt”– George Meredith. In other words we all exercise the will to do things at our own volition. Everyone of us has the will to do something.

The power of choosing; the faculty or endowment of the soul by which it is capable of choosing; the faculty or power of the mind by which we decide to do or not to do; the power or faculty of preferring or selecting one of two or more objects; is the will.

If you want to achieve something meaningful with your life, develop a strong desire for it. If you want money develop a strong desire for money. When you have the will to achieve something, nothing can stop you. Nothing can stand in your way; only the sky is the limit.

God gave each and every one of us the determination to succeed. To succeed you need to have the desire; the determination; the resolve and the will to take action. The will is what powers you. It is what drives you to continue taking action, that is why they call it the will power.

The strength of your mind should always be kept at optimum level. To achieve this you need to feed your mind with the right material. You need to have the right mental attitude for every situation that you encounter. If you want peace in your life, your mind must always be thinking peace.

The most common mistake most people make is not possessing what they want, in their mind. You will not achieve personal development if your mind is not thinking personal development. Your mind is the centre of all creation. You are who you are because of what you think about most of the times.

How can you enjoy happiness if your mind is always thinking negatively? change your mind and you will surely experience change.

Do Not Limit Yourself

The biggest obstacle to your progress is yourself. Often times we obstruct ourselves from reaching our full potential. We give up when we are faced with challenges. But do you realise that the darkest hour is just before dawn?

When you are about to hit Gold that’s the time when things look like they are crumbling down. It is usually the most darkest of periods. But I have learnt that it is actually the time to hold on even more. It is time to persevere.

Look, to reach your full potential you must move from the bottom going up. You must move from being a doubter to being a believer. Personal growth demands that you learn the ropes from the bottom up. You do not start climbing a tree from the top.

If you climb from the top, the only other way to go is either side ways or down. If you are going side ways it means there is no growth taking place and of course downs means you are falling.

I have learned that before every growth level there are challenges to be overcome. These challenges are a test of your character and the will to persist. They are building you for what is coming next. However, you need to know how to navigate through them.

In my life I have struggled with so many things, but I have not allowed my struggles to hold me down from pursuing my personal objectives. I have pledged to do everything I can to achieve my personal objectives.

In dark times I always ask God to help me change the things I can change. This way I concentrate my energies on my I can change and allow God to do the rest. Celebrate Your Small Victories

We all have experienced success in one thing or the other. The key to staying focused on your goals, which is the bigger picture, is to celebrate your small victories. If possible document them and make a reference to them every now and again.

This will always help you stay motivated and encouraged to work extra hard to experience the feeling of success again. I have found that completing a task on time is very fulfilling for me. Am very happy and proud of myself every time I produce an article for this website.

That nice feeling of having to complete a task drives me to even do more. Yes, I know that sometimes I get bogged down with other things, but I always look forward to being inspired to writing again.

Success is made up of the small victories that we pickup along the way. You should learn to give yourself a pat on the back when you have achieved or completed a task that you set out to do. Completing the small tasks leads you to your main goal.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Fear is an emotion that is experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger. The emotion of fear usually triggers negative thoughts and feelings. We all have experienced fear before and continue to do so every now and again. For some it could be the fear of heights; the fear to tell our story because we are scared of being embarrassed.

The fear of failure to venture into something new. Does this sound like you? Fear comes in many ways. For some the shear thought of living their comfort zone sends chills in their spine. We fail because we lack enough courage to overcome our fears.

Although fear can help us make necessary preparations to avoid certain calamities, it can also be quite devastating on our lives. It can have long term negative effects. It can lead to physical and psychological challenges. Fear has stopped most of us from fully, enjoying our God given lives. “To live a creative life we must lose our fear of being wrong” – Joseph Chilton Pearce.

Many studies that have been conducted reveal that “Fear causes worry. Worry makes you tense and nervous and affects the nerves of your stomach and actually changes the gastric juices of your stomach from normal to abnormal and often leads to stomach ulcers.”

This means that fear can eat you alive without you knowing. Dr. Joseph F. Montague, author of the book Nervous Stomach Trouble, says “You do not get stomach ulcers from what you eat. However, you get ulcers from what is eating you.” This is how much you can be destroyed by fear.

Let Go of Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure” –  Marianne Williamson. If you want to accomplish much in life, you need to let go of your fears. Especially the fear of failure.

Those who have accomplished beyond average are those who have learned to overcome their fears. It does not necessarily mean they are not afraid, they have just learned to have more courage and less fear. The more courage you develop the more fearless you become.

One of the ways to let go of fear is staying positive on your goals; staying true to goals. Focusing on the benefits and achievements that will accrue with your goals.

When you start to feel anxious remember that it is normal. It only becomes abnormal when you let anxiety stop you from your goals. This is what has killed most of us. We have allowed anxiety to take centre stage in our lives.

Focusing on your goals makes you motivated to achieving them. Yes, you may not achieve your goals the first time and neither will you the second time. But every time you take a step you move towards achieving your them. With every step and effort that you make you become less and less fearful.

I know that at times it can be very difficult to stay positive, but that is the essence of personal development and self improvement; that is life. It is to always find ways and means to overcoming your limitations and challenges.

You could try the following tips to help you stay motivated:-

  • Showing gratitude to others – I believe that showing gratitude is a sign of appreciation. It is a sign of being thankful. I believe that it is just humane to say thank you when you have been served. It is appreciating the effort that someone has put in to serving you.
  • Keep learning every day – This will take you away from your daily routine which sometimes could become boring. Besides learning is the corner stone of life. It is the holy grail of self improvement. The more you learn the more you become. If you want to achieve more you must become more. Be open minded to learning. Knowledge is one of the very few things that you will be buried with. Knowledge is personal to holder.
  • Lend a helping hand – Humanity was created to core exist. We have just lost it along the way, because of our selfish motives and petty jealousy. I know for sure that many of us derive satisfaction when we lend a helping hand. There is goodness in everyone of us.
  • Live for yourself – You are not in competition with anyone. You are your own competition. Move at your own pace and most of all learn to enjoy your life. Find something that you love to do and get on with it. Something that make you happy.
  • List your positive things in life – We all have done somethings that we are proud of. No matter how insignificant they are. They might seem small but when listed they add up.  It is important to list them and make reference to them every now and again. You will be amazed at the list you could come up with. This will always remind you of them and how it feels when you accomplish something you are proud of. You will more often than not try to replicate that feeling.

You have to measure what you want more of” – Charles Coonradt. Self-improvement takes a lot of hard work. Writing, being productive, managing your finances and improving your social life, all of these
pursuits take a great deal of energy and time. They can also be a little overwhelming and they all need to be measured to ascertain your progress.

Life is not static, it is dynamic. Things are always in motion. Life dictates that we grow and that all growth is from inside. Change is inevitable. The things we used to do five years ago cannot be done today. What was fashionable a few years ago is no longer fashionable now. This therefore, demands that you measure your progress every step of the way, if you have to keep up with life. Many of us have remained behind and are just moving with the wind. They say time waits for no one.

If you want to succeed you need to develop habits that will help you achieve your objectives. Now, I would not consider my self as  successful, but I know that am on the right track and path. Although, I still remain a very much work in progress in many aspects of my life I equally have made great success in some other aspects of which am very happy and proud of. It is very important that we learn how to measure and monitor our progression in life. In doing so we must also bear in mind that we are living our own race and are not in competition with anyone. This is very important.

Many of the times, people end up taking short cuts and find themselves in an wanted situations. It is not good to cut corners in life. One of the people I was privileged to have met and I thank God for bringing him in my life, was an engineer. I met this man for a few years but oh the wisdom he shared with me was very valuable. He became a father like figure to me even though we met on a professional level. The man always used to encourage me to do the right things and never cut corners because life has a way of catching up.

He shared with me his personal life experiences and you could see that even in his advanced age he had nothing to hide. From him I learnt that those who live to enjoy life are those who do the right the things all the time, even when it is not fashionable amongst their peers.

If you have to be successful at what ever you do, it is very important that you learn how to measure your progress. Knowing how to measure ones progress in life is one of the yards sticks of achieving your goals. This however, is not taught in schools. Yet, measuring progress is the norm at school and often times the teacher will give you a test. The purpose of the examination is to gauge the progress of the learners. It even gets worse when you attend tertiary institutions were you cannot proceed to the next semester without passing exams.

I believe that we need to change our educational system to start teaching learners how to be successful and not just for the sake of acquiring knowledge. Success principles must be included as put of our school curriculum. “Success has always been easy to measure. It’s the distance between one’s origins and one’s final achievement” – Michael Korda.

With the demands of life what has helped me greatly is to know how to measure my progress. Measuring my progress has more benefits in helping me be the right track. It helps me to be more efficient on my productivity; am more organised as I keep reviewing my performances regularly; I get more and more organised. Right now I have become a little more efficient on my article writing because I jot down my ideas as they pop up. This efficiency is largely due to reviewing my progress on a regular basis.

If you critically think about it. Your natural inclination is always to improve. How then do you know where you are going without keeping score of your progress? If you were to keep a scoresheet on the five things that would advance your personal and professional objectives the most, imagine how motivated you would be each time the numbers improved in your favour.


Remember, a real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided” – Tony Robbins. Decide where you need to keep score in order to manifest your vision and achieve your goals. Make sure to keep measuring your progress in all the areas of your life.

Get set, ready, steady go. The challenge starts today. The die is cast. There is no turning back. This is the beginning of the month-long article posting challenge. In my previous post, I made a public declaration and challenged myself to a daily article posting challenge for the month of February. Well, the month is right upon us. This is the first post for the challenge. At the end of this month, we should have a minimum of 29 articles of good value. The month has already started with challenges for me and I need to quickly learn how to navigate through them without disturbing my 29 Days challenge. I know that I will face a lot of them, but what will determine my success are the learning points that I will take from them.

I am not looking back but pressing ahead and see how far this challenge will take me. The beauty of it is that at the end of February  I will have moved a step closer to achieving my objective of improving my writing skills and contributing to humanity. I believe that when something is written it is indelible. Usually, we write what we believe in or what we want to say. Most of the time we convey our feelings and thoughts through writing.  The major difference between speaking and writing is the ease of reference. It is much easier to refer to written speeches. Written messages are never forgotten. Today we continue to make reference to the many quotes because they were written down.

Here are some of the key objectives of the 29 Day Challenge.

Increase content on the site

Increasing site content is a no brainer. Remember that I pledged to increase content on this site. The more articles that are posted on any site will, of course, add to the existing site content and hence increase the overall content. This is a basic SEO rule. The search engines love new content. This has the potential to greatly improve the site rankings by the search engines and therefore, increase search engine traffic to the website.

I believe that search engine traffic is the best because users reach your site through what they are searching for. They are more specific. Increased traffic means increased visibility and access to a wider audience. My hope is to reach as many people as possible. Through this am hoping to get more referral links pointing to this site. More backlinks mean more improved search engine rankings. This can only be good news for me.

Improve visitor satisfaction

Visitor satisfaction will come with the quality of the content being generated. Although visitor satisfaction will not only depend on content quality, there are many other factors that will ensure it is achieved. Some of them may beyond my control. However, I will endeavour to change those things that are within my power. I am also very much aware that you cannot please every visitor. But, I will try as much as possible to make the site user-friendly and work with more reliable and faster hosting service providers.

Improve my writing skills

They say practice makes perfect. I believe that even before I undertake this challenge, my writing skills are improving with every article I write. I can only assume that there will be a great improvement at the end of the challenge. I know that there is a lot of room for improving my writing skills. I can assure you that am constantly working to improving them on a regular basis. The better and more easily my articles are the more user satisfaction is generated.

Improve writing inspiration

Those of my friends who are artists and bloggers will understand what am saying when I say that you need the inspiration to write. It is not easy to just wake up and start writing. You need to have some kind of inspiration to put your thoughts on paper and worse still put them in a meaningful way. A musician always needs the inspiration to write and sing songs. The inspiration may come through real-life experiences and many other sources. One of the most killers of not putting down our thoughts is differing them to another time. I have learned over the years that when you feel inspired to write, don’t postpone to a later time, your thoughts will have disappeared by then. Just sit down and get going with it. Your thoughts will flow on paper. Usually, the idea is not even as clear at the beginning but as you delve into it you simply flow with it.


As we undertake this journey together I also challenge you to do something you have never done before. It could be exercising on a daily basis for a period of time. You could also challenge yourself to get rid of an old bad habit. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it adds more value to yourself and the world at large. I believe that we will be made to account for how we spend our time on this earth.

What would life be like without challenges? My guess is that it would be boring, actually very boring. As days continue rolling over in the new year and as we draw close to entering in the month of love, I have set my self a 29 days challenge to be completed at the end of the month of February. The challenge is I have committed to posting an article every day in the new month. These posts could be in the form of a written article like most of them are at this point, or it could be an audio or video recordings soon to be introduced. I am hoping that this month-long challenge will help improve my dedication to providing quality content to this site and continue to add value to people’s lives, which I strongly believe am doing. This will be my first public challenge for the year and hope to introduce many more along the way.

As mentioned I have never done this before, but can only pray and hope that God Almighty gives me the grace, strength, inspiration and wisdom to produce meaningful posts for my audience. I want to believe that it is good to challenge yourself out of your comfort zone in order to achieve your aspirations. Many of the times we are content with what we have as long as it is going well. Life is full of challenges and it is wise that you prepare for them. To achieve more you need to do more. To do more you need to challenge yourself for more. You never know what life will throw your way. Most of the times we are caught off guard with the challenges that come our way. As human beings, we have the capacity to do much more than we are currently doing. The biggest stumbling block to achieving your goals is you. If you challenge yourself enough and not be content with your current situation you will definitely achieve beyond your imagination. Remember that all growth comes from inside. It takes energy to grow and that energy can only be generated by your actions.

If you feel you are not improving any more with your current situation, it may just be that you have reached your limit with the current challenge and its time to move to a new one. “Don’t limit your challenges; but challenge your limits”. Over time I have learned to embrace new challenges. If you are in a working place and are resisting change just know that it is time for you to move on. In this world, today change is inevitable if you have to stay relevant and competitive. You must always be prepared to take on new challenges. If you feel you cannot cope with the new challenge take a break and learn the skills you need. If it means going back to school to acquire the knowledge, do just that. These days education has come even closer. We live in times where there are very few excuses for not being knowledgeable, what with the internet in our homes. I have also noticed that there are now more distance learning centres than ever before, even the traditional classroom centres are also providing distance learning. This means that you can access education from anywhere in the world.

As mentioned before that this year I have set my self many challenges and one of them being the active maintenance of this site. You will see more improvements made during the year some will be visible and others will not be. Those improvements will come by way of increased articles and general site outlook; improved presentation of articles. It is my intention that I become more and more active in posting articles on this site. I will be using more and more of this platform to communicate my thoughts, I think it is long overdue that I take this site to the next level. The other challenge which I will be talking about in detail at some point is the challenge to setup a back yard garden and letter transform it into a full-blown business. Gardening has always been something I have always wanted to do. I will be doing a lot of articles on this as well. I intend to do a lot of videos and pictures to show the progress and failures of my new gardening passion. By the way, it is the first time to have my own backyard garden. Keep tuned in.

Why you should challenge yourself

Martin Luther King Jr once said “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moment of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy” this statement alone should be enough reason for you to challenge yourself. There are many reasons why you should challenge yourself. The more you challenge your self the more growth you experience. Remember though that you must ensure that you do not just challenge yourself, but endeavour to overcome your challenges. Those who failed are those who tried and those who succeed have at some point experienced failure. I view challenges as temporal obstacles to success. There is a very positive feeling every time you overcome a challenge. Look Brian Tracy rightly said, “it’s only by contending with challenges that seem to be beyond your strength to handle at the moment you can grow more surely toward the stars”.

When challenging your self you are simply stepping up or preparing yourself for growth or the next level. If you are serious personal growth and development you need to continuously challenge yourself and overcoming the little obstacles that come your way.  “Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful” – Joshua J. I intend to give feedback at the end of the 29 Days challenge hopefully it will be positive. I will share my experiences and lessons learned, though I pray that the results will do more speaking. I would also like to encourage you to be in the habit of challenging yourselves and following through them. By overcoming the many difficulties that life throws at us in a positive way we can help change the world for the better. If I have correct goals and I keep pursuing them the best way I know how, everything falls into line. If I do the right thing, I am going to succeed” – Dan Dierdorf. Human beings by nature want to have easy things in life. Most of us are full of envy when we see our friends driving beautiful fancy cars and living a seemingly comfortable and enjoying life in general. How we long to arrive at the so-called “easy life” destination without hard work. Yet it does not come. The lazier we become further away from the good life drifts. Yes we can all achieve what we want and I believe, that is what God intended for us all. But achieving our hearts desires requires us to take bold and right steps; to make bold decisions that require a mindset change.

Personal development and self-growth requires a change in our mind and belief systems. If you are to achieve your goals, there is no doubt that your attitude and mindset has to be in the sink. Perhaps this could be a great start for you to set your year’s objectives and goals. The key thing is to start somewhere. Start now, plan to succeed at whatever you are intending to achieve. I believe that everything that is worthwhile is worth your effort.

If everything in life was easy to achieve or get, then life would have been very boring. Our bodies were designed to work, both physically and mentally. I have discovered that nature is neutral. God has blessed us with the same environment, we all have equal access to the environment. No one on this earth can claim to have more or less than 24hrs a day, I have never heard of anyone who has more or less air. We all experience the same conditions at a given time. We all tap into the same universal resources. The difference, however, is how efficient and effectively we use these abundant resources that God has given us. We are all products of the same universe. We were all created in the image of God.

The question that one may ask is how come life seems to be easy for some people? Well, I believe that there is nothing that comes as easily as it seems and let me just say that life is never easy. All good things come at a cost. You must be willing to pay the price before you begin to reap and enjoy the rewards. I know for sure that for you to live a happy and successful life you must be willing to pay the price and be disciplined enough to delay gratification. Most of us want to live in the now and not in the future. We do not want to delay gratification. Even the so-called easy life is not as easy as it seems. It may look easy from the outside but it is not what it seems. I remember during my earlier working days in life when we used to envy our friends who worked for bigger and “better” corporate organisations. We all would be saying “if only I worked for that organisation life would be easy”. Yet the people working for the same organisations would be looking elsewhere.

Condition your mind to start working

You will agree with me that everything that is good is worth working for. It feels very nice when you have worked for something and are enjoying the benefits. It gives me much pleasure when I have achieved a target. I have a sense of joy and my mind is always positive to even work harder. It is, therefore, very important to set goals that are achievable in order that you keep a positive mental attitude. Failure should, however, not be an obstacle it should be viewed as a challenge to be overcome. It should be a learning process. Every day of our lives we are constantly pushing ourselves to achieve targets. You may not realise it but every day of your life you are achieving a target this could either be positive or negative the choice is yours.

You need to prepare your mind for success. Preparing your mind for success is important as this will also allow you to grow with your success. This will require you to take deliberate steps to condition your mind. If need be you may have to change your friends or get out of some bad relationships. Yes I mean change your friends. Not all relationships are actually beneficial some can be very detrimental. You may also need to move to a new location. Over time I have personally had to make some drastic changes to my lifestyle. This has helped me a great deal. I am more focused on what I do. Believe me, some relationships can be a distraction to your progress, the sooner you identify them and make the necessary change the better. It may be difficult for you to make drastic changes right now but if you are serious about shaping your future, find a way to adjust. Do not allow friendship to hinder your progress.

Your mind plays a key role in determining your overall progress in life. What you feed your mind on a daily basis is very important. The Bible says “ for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of”. If you hang around people with a positive mental attitude you are most certainly going to have a positive attitude the opposite is also true. Everything that we do or want to do in life begins in our minds. Our minds are, therefore, the workshop or the engine room of everything. Do you realise that everything that is made by man was conceived in the mind? This is how important our minds are. Apart from hanging around with positive-minded people, you could also start reading books and listening to audiotapes that will have a positive impact on your mind. Make a deliberate habit to change your mind and ensure that you take action.

There is no easy route

Once you have started pursuing your goals learn to be patient with yourself. You will keep on falling and failing. Every new skill or habit takes time to execute with minimum effort. Keep learning from your mistakes and be open-minded to make the necessary changes. I have noticed that most of the young generation are in the habit of trying to cut corners especially in the area of financial freedom. Believe me, it is not worth it. I am yet to find an easy route to success that is not short-lived. Ever since I embarked on doing what I love most it has not been easy. Yes, I enjoy it but the journey has not been an easy one. I have enjoyed both dry moments and good ones. What keeps me going is the fact that I enjoy writing and hope that these articles are of help to someone. I am still very much a work in progress but impressed with my own progress so far.

From my studies and personal experience on the subject of self-growth and improvement, I have learned that cutting corners only yields short-lived happiness. If you want long-lasting happiness resolve to do the right things. You will have peace of mind for the rest of your life. The small things that I have achieved so far through hard work make me feel over the moon. They may be small but they actually count a lot to me. After all, success is the sum total of the things we accomplish on a daily basis. I am not in any competition or race with anybody and therefore, will move at my own pace. Like I always say if something is worth the salt then it is worth your sweat. Everything is always difficult for the first time.


Everything in life is hard before it’s easy. They say that it takes 21 Days to develop a new habit. You can take advantage of this theory and change your non-productive habits to those that will in the process help you grow as an individual. Having the knowledge that our minds are very critical to our personal development and self-improvement it is therefore very important that we learn to guard our minds and hearts. We all have formed an image of ourselves in one way or another. I have been doing a personal study of my performance in relation to my personal image.

The discovery has been phenomenon. I have discovered that the way I view myself has a direct relationship with my task performance and my general life output.

I believe that this is true for most of us. We live our lives based on our self-image. We form our self-image based on many factors especially external ones.

If your self-image is that of a failure or of a loser, believe me, you are most likely living a failed or losing life. However, the opposite is also true.

When am carrying out a task and my personal thoughts are negative the results are also not very encouraging. Sometimes I have spent hours and hours writing articles only to realise that I have not done a good job.

This happens mostly when am having negative feelings. These articles never find their way on my website.

It is, therefore, important that you create a positive self-image if you have to improve your performance.  Having a positive self-image is one of the key factors for enhancing your personal growth.

A positive self-image will accelerate your performance levels and speed up your goal attainment process. I know that there are times when you just feel negative about something, it is absolutely okay to feel that way.

The key thing is how quickly you turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. I have written enough articles on this website that sometimes when I feel demotivated, I start going through some of them, and boom my mind is filled with positive thoughts.

I have also gotten inspiration for writing even more articles just from reading motivational books. I am not blowing my own trumpet but just merely stressing the point of reading motivational articles.

If you have always had negative thoughts about yourself image, I encourage you to read the bible for inspiration. There are many books out there but, the bible is the book of life. It is your manual for life.

When you read the bible, you begin to see how precious you are in the eyes of God. Failure is mostly associated with our negative self-image.

You have the capacity to change and shape your destiny if only you can change your personal self-image. Change begins with you.

If you want to improve your performance and live the life you’ve always wanted, you must make the mental change to believe that you are the best at what you do and begin to take action.

You are responsible for your life and should learn to take full responsibility for your actions and current situation. If you are an adult you should not expect a bailout.

Just take responsibility and begin to act on making things better for yourself. “The moment of enlightenment is when a person’s dreams of possibilities become images of probabilities” – Vic Bruden.

How Do You Change Your Self-image?

This is perhaps the starting point to your personal growth. You, alone are responsible for creating your self-image.

It’s like in a marriage, what you tell your relatives and friends about your spouse is what they will know about her.  If you disrespect her, believe me, they will also do the same.

What you call your spouse in public is what they will call her. So if you want people to respect her you will always endeavour to tell them positive things about her.

Those of you who are married must take this advice seriously. You will respect her in public regardless of the differences you had at home.

It’s those that do not value their marriages who will talk negatively about their spouses in public. Yes, every marriage has its own unique problems and we do not want to bring them out in public.

The same is true with how you view and portray yourself to people. The more positive and confident you show people the more positive and confident people will see you.

But this begins with yourself seeing the many positive things and qualities you possess. Take a sheet of paper and just write out 20 things you think you are.

You will be amazed at what you will write down. Yes, we fail but that does not mean we should not try again. The most successful people fail many times before they succeed.

The less successful people give up once they encounter a challenge. Failure to me is merely an obstacle to be overcome. Life would be very boring without challenges.

Many of the times when we encounter challenges it simply means that there is an opportunity to develop a solution for the challenge.

If you keep trying and trying things differently you will surely succeed at what you are doing.

Fill your mind with positive self-images about your self and sooner than later your mind will change the way you look at yourself.

Create a deliberate habit of saying “I like my self” repeatedly every time you feel low emotionally. When you wake up in the morning ask God to help you focus on the positive things in life.

Refuse the spirit of negativity and put on the image of positive thinking. Believe that you can complete a task with better results and make time to develop your skillset.

Have an open mind to learning new things. Always see failure as a challenge and refuse to accept it.

Surely changing your self-image will make you feel much much happier and definitely help to improve your performance.

When you feel good about yourself you will perform much, much better. After all, what you want most in life is the feeling of happiness.

Know that you will come across people that will say unpleasant things about you. But you have the ultimate control to either accept or reject them, and besides, we all have skeletons in our closets.

No one on this earth can claim to be pure. It is also beneficial to hang around people that have a positive image of you as this helps to keep you motivated.

When you create a positive image about yourself, somehow it flows from you and attracts the right people. Make a deliberate policy to evaluate your friends, some of them may not be very beneficial to your personal growth.

Maintain the Discipline of Doing What is Right

You know, there is a good feeling when you do something that is right. The feeling is just awesome. I would not be wrong to say that we all possess the ability to do the right thing.

There is just something nice when we feel that, what we have done is good. All well-meaning people have a conscious that tells us about what we are doing.

I usually go with my first thoughts or rather my instincts. If am doing something that am not sure of its effect on other people, I back out unless am convinced otherwise.

This is not to say that I have never done wrong things before, No. Believe me, I have and, have learned to take responsibility for them, and help to correct them if I can.

I am not ashamed to go back and say am sorry let me correct my wrongdoing. I have developed the discipline of doing what I think and feel is right especially for my success.

Self-discipline is one of the most difficult traits, but an important one for personal development and growth. We keep fighting every day to do the right things.

Our minds are always telling us to do the easier things in life than do the most difficult and important things first. Like delayed gratification, we always want to spend money rather than save for the future.

I will be honest, I also struggle on a daily basis to do the easy things and forget the difficult and necessary tasks. But tell you what, every time I conquer this edge, there is a feeling of joy and satisfaction.

Developing the discipline of doing the right things first is a good attribute to helping in improving your performance.

Doing the right things always makes you feel motivated and proud of yourself.

Society lacks men and women who can stand up to do the right things even in the advent of criticism.

It seems to me that many of us have fallen prey to doing what is popular or trending for fear of being called bad names.

We would rather be on the same side with the majority even when we know deep down our hearts that what we have done is wrong.


Believe in yourself” – Unknown. The essence of personal self-image is very critical to personal growth as it is the centre of your performance attribute.

We should try as much as possible to create a positive self-image if we have to enjoy our lives. Most of the people who have a negative self-image are low performers.

If you are in a leadership position take a closer look at your subordinate’s performance reports, you will realise that one of the major factors of low performers is a result of a negative self-image.

The higher performers are more usually confident and have a positive self-image.

You should consider helping those that are low performers as this will inadvertently reflect on your leadership skills and enhance your performance as a team.

Emotional self-awareness is the building block of all competencies as mentioned in Daniel Goleman’s model of intelligence, published in 1995.

Every day, that you wake up you need to recognise what you are feeling in order to move to the next competence level. Self-awareness has three skills, emotional self-awareness; accurate self-awareness, and self-confidence.

It is very interesting to note that most of us are not very much aware of our emotions.

When we are not aware of our feelings and emotions, and the causes of them, leading a happy and productive life is difficult if not almost impossible.

Yes, there may be signs of success such as prestige, money, or career progression and success. But to be truly happy, we must be able to determine what really makes us feel good and what makes us feel bad.

We cannot be truly happy and productive until we are aware of our feelings and what causes them. The knowledge of our emotional self-awareness is the driving force for our actions.

When you develop your level of emotional self-awareness, you are able to specifically decipher how you are feeling at any given moment.

This will help you resolve and know the basis and source of your current feelings. You will also know how your body is reacting.

I know that becoming aware of your emotions takes practice. If you practice, the ability to note what you are feeling will increase with time.

I have outlined a few ways in which you can increase your emotional self-awareness.

Checking Yourself

The first thing to increasing your emotional self-awareness is to learn how to check yourself. To begin checking your emotions you will need to make time for doing so.

You need to also know the different kinds of emotions or feelings. You also need to be aware that most if not all emotions are a result of external stimuli.

Our emotions are our body’s reaction to certain conditions that we have been exposed to.

I personally do an emotional check in the morning and late in the evening before going to bed. This is besides the monitoring as and when they occur.

I have developed a skill to quickly monitor my body’s emotions at a particular time in a given situation. But when you first start I suggest you schedule it 3 times a day, that is morning, afternoon and evening.

It may seem cumbersome in the initial stages but as time goes on you will realise that you will be able to call the skill anytime you feel a strong or distressing or strange feeling.

I believe that happiness can only be achieved by identifying those feelings that make us feel happy and replacing sad feelings with happy ones.

Here is how you can check yourself. Sit down quietly, if possible close your eyes, ask yourself the following questions and please ensure that you answer them honestly.

Remember there is no right or wrong answer you are not competing with anyone.

  • How am I feeling?
  • What am I feeling?
  • Why am I feeling like this?
  • How long have I been feeling like this?
  • Where is the feeling manifesting itself in the body?

Pay attention to your body language. Some stressing or strong emotions may cause symptoms such as headaches, stomach-ache’s and just general body aches.

Negative emotions are a health hazard. Learning to check yourself is the key to actually knowing how to handle your emotions. Checking yourself will also give you an accurate idea of how to handle and control your emotions.

Sometimes, especially when we are angry we tend to react on impulse. If you learn how to handle your anger you will never find yourself in a regrettable situation.

Write Down Your Feelings

Once you are aware of your emotions you then need to write them down. I believe there is power in writing. After you have listed them down review them.

Investigate what triggered them. As you get better at knowing your feeling you can label them whatever you want. Know also that not all feelings are negative.

I know for sure that most of us will not pay attention to positive feelings but it is also important to have a clear understanding of what the source for these emotions is. This knowledge will come in handy when you want to start isolating and handling your emotions correctly.

To help with identifying the triggers of your emotions ask yourself the following questions and be sure to be very sincere with your answers.

Remember you are not competing with anyone and that your reaction will strongly depend upon the answers to the following questions.

  • When did the feeling start?
  • What was I doing or rather what was happening when it started?
  • Has the strength of the emotion changed if so how has it changed?
  • How often has this happened

The above questions are best answered if you have a tendency to plan your daily activities. I would encourage you to develop among other habits of planning your daily activities.

This puts you in total control of your time management and also helps increase your emotional self-awareness. If you are in the habit of daily activity planning you may not even realise that you have your emotional self-awareness under control.

The whole idea of writing down your emotions is to get to the root cause of the feelings. Most of the time we tend to cure the symptoms rather than cure the root cause.

You see if you know why you are feeling a certain way it is then possible to try and resolve the cause rather than pretend it did not happen.

Finding out the root cause of the negative feeling does not necessarily mean you are accepting it; no you are merely trying to find a better solution.

This brings us to the importance of noting down both positive and negative emotions. If the cause is resolvable you would have also resolved the bad or negative feeling.

Learn to detect your emotion as they happen. Most of the time, our emotions are communicating something to us. You need to take extra caution and pay attention to your emotion as they occur.

This though does not come overnight but with gradual practice and learning to live consciously, you will be in touch with your emotions and know yourself a lot better.

Remember that we sometimes feel more than one emotion at a time but each one of them presents information that we can learn more about ourselves.

Personal development is achieved when we learn more about ourselves and improve on our weaknesses.

Preparing Your Emotions

As you continue to build on your emotional self-awareness in the present you will learn to identify the triggers or situations and circumstances that lead to certain feelings.

Remember it is the skill of knowing what the cause is that will reveal how to handle or avert similar situations that trigger negative emotions. I know for sure that most of us would like to have only positive emotions.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in life. Life is full of challenges that need to be overcome. It is these challenges that trigger different emotions and reactions that each and every one of us needs to be prepared for.

Learning to prepare your emotions for an event can help boost your self-confidence among other benefits of having to control yourself better.

If we know how to handle our emotions we certainly have a better chance of handling failure very well and moving forward. The emotion of frustration is the one driving force to failure.

If you are doing a project that you seem not to be getting the desired results at the first few attempts, you may begin to feel frustrated.

It the way you handle this emotion of frustration that will determine your way forward. If handled negatively you are doomed to fail but if handled positively success is in the air for you.

There are many instances that require us to prepare our emotions for the future. A typical example is when you are going to see your boss say over a disciplinary case or in a meeting where you are called to make a presentation.

You will need to have your emotions under control in order to achieve the desired results especially if you are in the field of marketing.

The benefits of knowing and preparing your emotions for the future cannot be over emphasised.

You need to learn the skill of preparing your emotional self-awareness for greater personal development.

Self-growth requires that you have greater control of yourself and emotional self-awareness is part of the greater picture.

Before I close, let me emphasise the importance to note that we can feel different emotions at the same time and even feel as if some of them are conflicting.

Addressing the 3 main motivation killers

Even though motivation is a key factor when it comes to issues of personal development and self-growth it is not always easy to stay motivated. Most successful people, be it sports men/women, movie actors, politicians, businessmen etc. will tell you that without being motivated by something, they would not have attained greatness. “To succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you” ~ Tony Dosset. There has to be a motivating factor for you to continuously pursue your life’s purpose. Motivation is one of the single most factors that distinguish success from failure. But we all at some point in our life’s journey get demotivated for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with it, we are human and it’s in our nature. The difference is how we handle life’s challenges. How we rise up and get over it.

I have analysed the main reasons for being demotivated, let’s first outline the 3 motivation killers and proceed to addressing them.

Lack of self confidence
The first one is a lack of self-confidence all together. Why would you continue to do something if you don’t believe that you can do it? If you are a cyclist and have entered into a competition would you go ahead to participate in it if you think you cannot win it? For all I know those who are successful participate in competitions with the aim to win and not to lose. Let’s take two soccer teams for example competing in the world cup final. I would like to believe that the team that carries the day is the one with the right confidence and show that they really want it.

When you lack self-confidence it is almost impossible to succeed. Confidence enhances our motivation. It is true that when you have high levels of confidence so is your motivational levels and the opposite is equally true. A low or no self-confidence generates low or no motivational. The greatest enemy to developing a positive high confidence is fear; it can also generate low self-confidence. It is therefore very important that you try as much as possible to avoid lacking self confidence.

Lack of focus
“Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives” ~ Tony Robbins. Do you know what it is that you want to achieve, if not, why should you take action; why should you be motivated? You cannot start a journey without a final destination in mind unless you are tourist. You cannot start something without knowing exactly what you want to achieve. Otherwise you will find yourself with a lot of goals that are difficult to achieve. You need to concentrate on a narrow path that is manageable to achieve. You need to focus on what you want to achieve in with your life. Having a clearly written down life’s purpose is the beginning point for focusing.

When I started my path on self-development I listed down quite a number of goals and began to narrow them down as time passed by. You will notice that at the very beginning when we set out, we have a number of goals to be achieved but, as time goes by and as the picture becomes clearer you will be forced to adjust your goals. The important thing however, is to get started with at least a good understanding of what you what to achieve. It will definitely be very blurred and unclear. The time and thoughts wasted in aimless effort would accomplish wonders if properly directed with some special object in view.

Lack of a sense of direction
Insight enables us to plan to advantage and turn our thought and attention in the right

direction, instead of into channels which can yield no possible return. You cannot have a sense of direction without understanding what you want to achieve. However, if you know what you want and believe that you can achieve it but have no clue how to get started, you can be very demotivated. Have you ever felt that whatever you are doing has no sense of direction and what was your reaction to it? Exactly you quit and refocused.

Though when starting out, sometimes you may find yourself in the situation were you feel you have no direction, being in there may help you create direction. Whatever you do in life you must always make sure that you have a sense of direction. It may not be clear to people around you but for as long as you feel it is for you, continue in the same path. We have outlined the 3 main motivation killers above. It is now time that we move on and focus our attention on how to address them. We will now proceed in the same manner as before until we reach the conclusion.

Addressing a lack of self confidence
“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope or confidence” ~ Helen Keller. Thoughts of courage, power, confidence and hope all produce a

corresponding state, but the one enemy which must be absolutely destroyed before there is any possibility of letting any light shine is fear. Fear is an enemy of success. Remember that fear is a very strong emotion and has the ability to derail anyone who harbours it. Here are some suggestions that can help address a lack of self-confidence;-

  • Focusing on what you already have achieved than what you do not have. Appreciate what you have. After all they say “a bird in hand is better than one in the bush”.
  • Create your own positive mantra that will assist you to boost yourself up.
  • Speak positive things to yourself every day. If no one compliments you on your work why not do it yourself. Tell yourself how well you have done. Find ways of rewarding yourself for your work.
  • Learn also to accept compliments when they come along and enjoy the feedback. Compliments are good but they should not get to your head. Sometimes we have a tendency of over reacting to compliments from other people.
  • Keep reminding yourself of the good things that you have achieved and have gained. We all have done good, at some point. This will surely lift your spirits. I believe that even the worst condemned person on earth has some goodness in them. Remember we are all created in God’s image and God is love.

Addressing a lack of focus

The very act of goal setting puts a structure around your random thoughts and keeps you focused on them, that’s why, it is important to have your goals written down. Read them on a daily basis and make sure you can recite them. Goal setting is one of the key areas of personal
development and self-growth. Instead of worrying about the future and what it will bring set down and gain what fortune grants. Focus on how you can help change the situation.

Pessimism muddies up the water of opportunity. Anytime a fresh innovation appears promising to make life easier, somebody always complains that it will take the jobs of individuals. When Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, objectors said that it would put thousands of individuals out of work.
