“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

“All growth is from within” ~ Master Key. “Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life” ~ Herbert Otto. I know and believe that every normal thinking person has a dream, at least I have one. We all want to believe deep down in our souls that we have a special gift, that we can make a difference, that we can touch others in a special way, and that we can help make society and the world at large a better place. The biggest challenge to this belief is ones-self. You are responsible for making it and living your dream life. No one but you alone, are the master of your destiny. The thoughts and actions you make come from within you and hence determine the course of your life’s direction. In this article I try and help you take a leap of personal development by accepting that you play a major role in determining the course of your future.

There are three decisions that you make every moment of your life that shape and control your destiny. These three decisions will control what you will notice, what you will feel, what you will do and finally what you will contribute and who you will become. I believe that if you do not control these decisions it becomes very difficult to take the giant step of growth. It also means to me, that you are not in control of your life. Firstly you must understand that all growth comes from within; growth is embedded thin the inside of you. Jesus gives us the example of the mastered seed in the bible. Out of a small seed grows a huge tree. Where does the tree come from? Off course the external environment plays a part but it is hugely what is inside that determines that extent of growth. If you have very little faith in what you are doing then you might as well stop it and grow the faith before continuing. When you control these three decisions then you begin to shape your destiny.

What is your focus in life?

Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives” ~Tony Robbins. The first step of growth for me to take is the decision is what to focus on. You see, it’s not what is happening to you right now or what happened to you in the past that determines who you want to become. But rather it’s your decision on what to focus on that will help determine your personal growth. Do you want to dwell on the negative past and want to focus on the negative results that you have archived? What you decide to focus on largely determines what results you will accomplish. Focus on negative results and believe me you will have just that. It is very important that you learn to focus on the positive aspects of life even in trying movements. Here is a lesson I have learnt in life it is much easier to walk out when things are not going on well. This I tell you is the easiest decision you can make in life and believe me it is not usually the best one available.

Luckily we all have the ability to make decisions to focus; we all have the some power and consciousness to focus. When you focus this power through attention or concentration on any single purpose for considerable length of time nothing becomes impossible. If you have ever looked through the viewfinder of a camera, you found that when the object was not in focus, the impression was indistinct and possibly blurred, but when the proper focus was obtained the picture was clear and distinct. This illustrates the power of concentration. Unless you can focus and concentrate upon the object which you have in view, you will have but a hazy, indifferent, vague, indistinct and blurred outline of your ideal and the results will be in accordance with your mental picture. We therefore, have no excuse to fail making better decisions.

By making the decision to focus on the right things in life we are taking a giant step of growth. Remember that growth will not come all at once or like manner from heaven. You need to make the right decisions and actions. I want to believe that if you have a written down life’s intended purpose then you have a plan to focus on. The first thing to do before you make the decision to focus is to have a written down life’s purpose as mentioned before. This will give you a better reason to focus and achieve your goals in a more organized manner.

What do things means to you?

“My definition of success is to live your life in a way that causes you to feel a ton of pleasure and very little pain – and because of your lifestyle, have the people around you feel a lot more pleasure than they do pain” ~ Tony Robbins. My second step of growth is the decision about what things mean to you? Well you may want to ask yourself what life means to you; why do you exist? These are just but some of the questions that you may have to know the answers to. The decision about what things mean to you is a huge one that you cannot afford not to make if you have to make the second giant step of growth. Remember you need to know what things mean to you in order to have greater control of your life. After you have made the decision to focus ask yourself what does the thing(s) you are focusing on mean to you; what is the value of it? If it can be quantified put a monetary value to it. They say you heart is where your money is. Where is your heart?

In life we come across so many things and most of them are actually useful for a short while and then become meaningless after some time. Therefore, it is very important that you know when something is of value and when to let go of it. Many of the times we keep holding on even to things that have no more value. We carry a lot of cabbage long with us. Know that if you carry cabbage it is of no value to you. This applies even to people that we come across. Some of them have no value per say in our lives. Yet we continuously spend more time with them. I am not saying you should create enemies but try to spend more time with the people that add value to your life, If you have to grow.

If you have to grow stop taking responsibility for people’s actions. Remember you are accountable for your own actions. I have seen people who want to take responsibility for someone’s actions in the name of pleasing them. This is very wrong, and please know that the best recipe for failure is to try to please everyone. You should attach a value to Personal growth and development. To do this you need firstly to have spelt out your intended life’s purpose. Believe me, if you do not have a written down LIFE’S INTENDED PURPOSE, you are just chasing after the wind. You are flowing with the wind. You have no control of your life’s destiny.

What do you want to do?

I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” —THOMAS EDISON. Lastly the decision to know what you want to do to achieve your goal is very cardinal. This still brings me back to the idea of having a written down life’s intended purpose. Without which you cannot make the decision to know what to do to achieve it. If you went ahead and made the decision, it would be like getting in a car and driving off without a known destination. In other words you would be driving aimlessly. In this case you are living life aimlessly without a written down life’s intended purpose.

Many of us are scared to make decisions of what we want to do or rather how we want to go about achieving our intended life’s purpose, for fear of making the wrong decisions. Believe me we all have made wrong decisions in our lives and we are all going to make wrong ones in future. The key is to be flexible enough to override our earlier decisions and replace them. We do not have to allow the past wrong decisions we made to control our future. Remember your future is affected by the decisions you make now. Always try your level best to think through and possibly delay your decisions so as to make better judgment of what you want to achieve. The best time to make some of these hard decisions is in the night when you are alone and reflecting on your day. Believe me I have made far much better decisions when not rushed. Remember: Success truly is the result of good judgment. Good judgment is the result of experience, and experience is often the result of bad judgment!

Too many of us don’t make the majority of our decisions consciously, especially these three absolutely crucial ones; in so doing, we pay a major price. To avoid making wrong decisions’ we must commit to learning from the earlier mistakes. This is the only way we can improve on our decision making process and stop make better judgment of what decisions are to be made in future. Personal development is a continuous process and does not come without effort. Remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

Motivation Motivational Personal Development

Addressing the 3 main motivation killers

Even though motivation is a key factor when it comes to issues of personal development and self-growth it is not always easy to stay motivated. Most successful people, be it sports men/women, movie actors, politicians, businessmen etc. will tell you that without being motivated by something, they would not have attained greatness. “To succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you” ~ Tony Dosset. There has to be a motivating factor for you to continuously pursue your life’s purpose. Motivation is one of the single most factors that distinguish success from failure. But we all at some point in our life’s journey get demotivated for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with it, we are human and it’s in our nature. The difference is how we handle life’s challenges. How we rise up and get over it.

I have analysed the main reasons for being demotivated, let’s first outline the 3 motivation killers and proceed to addressing them.

Lack of self confidence
The first one is a lack of self-confidence all together. Why would you continue to do something if you don’t believe that you can do it? If you are a cyclist and have entered into a competition would you go ahead to participate in it if you think you cannot win it? For all I know those who are successful participate in competitions with the aim to win and not to lose. Let’s take two soccer teams for example competing in the world cup final. I would like to believe that the team that carries the day is the one with the right confidence and show that they really want it.

When you lack self-confidence it is almost impossible to succeed. Confidence enhances our motivation. It is true that when you have high levels of confidence so is your motivational levels and the opposite is equally true. A low or no self-confidence generates low or no motivational. The greatest enemy to developing a positive high confidence is fear; it can also generate low self-confidence. It is therefore very important that you try as much as possible to avoid lacking self confidence.

“Have your heart in your life’s work, and be stout-hearted. Do something, act always, and do it now. Don’t be afraid. Many a man has been defeated by his doubts—lack of confidence. Take your risks —you cannot eliminate them, you cannot escape them. You can diminish them by dominating them” ~ Batten’s Wedge.

Lack of focus
“Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives” ~ Tony Robbins. Do you know what it is that you want to achieve, if not, why should you take action; why should you be motivated? You cannot start a journey without a final destination in mind unless you are tourist. You cannot start something without knowing exactly what you want to achieve. Otherwise you will find yourself with a lot of goals that are difficult to achieve. You need to concentrate on a narrow path that is manageable to achieve. You need to focus on what you want to achieve in with your life. Having a clearly written down life’s purpose is the beginning point for focusing.

When I started my path on self-development I listed down quite a number of goals and began to narrow them down as time passed by. You will notice that at the very beginning when we set out, we have a number of goals to be achieved but, as time goes by and as the picture becomes clearer you will be forced to adjust your goals. The important thing however, is to get started with at least a good understanding of what you what to achieve. It will definitely be very blurred and unclear. The time and thoughts wasted in aimless effort would accomplish wonders if properly directed with some special object in view.

Lack of a sense of direction
Insight enables us to plan to advantage and turn our thought and attention in the right

direction, instead of into channels which can yield no possible return. You cannot have a sense of direction without understanding what you want to achieve. However, if you know what you want and believe that you can achieve it but have no clue how to get started, you can be very demotivated. Have you ever felt that whatever you are doing has no sense of direction and what was your reaction to it? Exactly you quit and refocused.

Though when starting out, sometimes you may find yourself in the situation were you feel you have no direction, being in there may help you create direction. Whatever you do in life you must always make sure that you have a sense of direction. It may not be clear to people around you but for as long as you feel it is for you, continue in the same path. We have outlined the 3 main motivation killers above. It is now time that we move on and focus our attention on how to address them. We will now proceed in the same manner as before until we reach the conclusion.

Addressing a lack of self confidence
“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope or confidence” ~ Helen Keller. Thoughts of courage, power, confidence and hope all produce a

corresponding state, but the one enemy which must be absolutely destroyed before there is any possibility of letting any light shine is fear. Fear is an enemy of success. Remember that fear is a very strong emotion and has the ability to derail anyone who harbours it. Here are some suggestions that can help address a lack of self-confidence;-

  • Focusing on what you already have achieved than what you do not have. Appreciate what you have. After all they say “a bird in hand is better than one in the bush”.
  • Create your own positive mantra that will assist you to boost yourself up.
  • Speak positive things to yourself every day. If no one compliments you on your work why not do it yourself. Tell yourself how well you have done. Find ways of rewarding yourself for your work.
  • Learn also to accept compliments when they come along and enjoy the feedback. Compliments are good but they should not get to your head. Sometimes we have a tendency of over reacting to compliments from other people.
  • Keep reminding yourself of the good things that you have achieved and have gained. We all have done good, at some point. This will surely lift your spirits. I believe that even the worst condemned person on earth has some goodness in them. Remember we are all created in God’s image and God is love.

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt. Personal development demands that you have confidence in whatever, you are doing for your own success.

Addressing a lack of focus
Brian Tracy Personal DevelopmentOne of the best ways to defeat a lack of focus is to set goals for yourself that are reasonable and achievable. The very act of goal setting puts a structure around your random thoughts and keeps you focused on them, that’s why, it is important to have your goals written down. Read them on a daily basis and make sure you can recite them. Goal setting is one of the key areas of personal
development and self-growth. Instead of worrying about the future and what it will bring set down and gain what fortune grants. Focus on how you can help change the situation.

I recently listened to Brian Tracy’s DVD entitled “the miracle of self-discipline” Where he teaches about daily goal setting. This DVD is life changing. You can get some of his great works by clicking here. Remember that the consciousness that focuses in your brain cells is the same consciousness which focuses in the brain cells of every other individual. You need to develop sense of focus and fine tune it. It may not be easy for some to develop it at the beginning but with practice you will improve it.

“One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular” ~ Tony Robbins.

Address a lack of sense of direction
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined” ~ Henry David Thoreau. Addressing this one is tricky especially if you are just starting on your road to success. As the Chinese say “a journey of 3000 miles begins with one step”. It does not say whether it’s a step in the right or wrong direction the most important thing is to take the first step. Daunting as it may seem the direction will become clearer as you break down your goals into smaller manageable ones. Remember you cannot skip from 1 to 3000 miles. You need to plan on how to reach the next mile and make adjustments as you get to know the terrain better. This way you will have a sense of direction and appreciate your journey.

As they say Rome was not built in one day. When you have built the right sense of direction you tend to be motivated and feel comfortable with what you are trying to achieve. One of the best ways to creating a good sense of direction is writing down what you want to achieve and breaking it down into small achievable goals. Motivation plays a key role in personal development and success. We must try by all means to overcome the 3 motivational killers mentioned in this article as they can derail our progress. Remember you can do all things possible in Christ Jesus who strengthens you. Bye for now and stay motivated and always “standout tall and be counted”.

Motivational Self Growth

Change your mind and enjoy your success

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.  The starting point for success is determination and belief, both of which begin in the mind. Determination and belief opens your mind to new opportunities to do and to be anything you desire. You are where you are because of your mind set. Your personal progress is mainly determined by your mind set. The more open, your mind set is the more success you can achieve. It is amazing how much success can be scored just by changing the way think and do things. One of the major elements of success is openness of your mind. Let’s look at some of the things we need to do to help us change our minds.

Renew your mind

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” – The Bible. Your mind is the key to your success change the way you think and you open your way to success. Our minds are always clogged with dirt and need to be renewed on a daily basis. You renew your mind by reading positive and inspirational books, listening to personal development lectures, attending workshops on personal development and many more. Where do you get your inspiration from; where does your help come from? My number one source is reading the Bible. I have come to appreciate that the Bible is a wealth of inspiration. Reading the bible and applying it to my everyday has been very beneficial to personal development and success.

When you renew your mind rid it of the old thinking and bring upon it a new thinking. Mind in itself is believed to be a subtle form of static energy, from which arises the activities called ‘thought,’ which is the dynamic phase of mind. Mind is static energy; thought is dynamic energy – the two phases of the same thing. Thought is therefore the vibratory force formed by converting static mind into dynamic mind.

Watch your self-speech

The statement “there is power in the tongue” may come as a surprise to some but the statement is as true as can be. What we say about ourselves goes deep down our subconscious that what other people say about us. Your opinion about your self is cardinal and should always be a positive one. Speaking positively about ourselves helps us renew our mind. We are constantly telling the mind what to think of ourselves.

If I get promoted
I am not good enough
I’ll never amount to much
I always fail at that

Are some of the negative speeches we make about ourselves. These negative speeches come from our daily programming. You could probably list a thousand negative statements about yourself.

These however, must be replaced by positive speeches like;

When I get promoted
I am good enough
I’ll amount to much
Next time I will not fail at that

Positive speeches help to motivate and uplift ourselves. We must always ensure that we speak positively about ourselves regardless of the situation and circumstances.

Focus your mind

When we let our mind focus through attention or concentration on any single purpose for any length of time you will see how nothing becomes impossible to achieve. It is important that we keep our mind focused on our intended purpose of our lives. If you have ever looked through the viewfinder of a camera, you found that when the object was not in focus, the impression was indistinct and possibly blurred, but when the proper focus was obtained the picture was clear and distinct. This illustrates the power of concentration and focusing.

Keeping your mind focused on what you want to achieve in life sends out energy to attract the necessary conditions to enable you achieve your intended goals. An open and positive mind allows the universe to act upon your inner thought energy and create that which you seek.

If you truly desire something so keenly that your desire is an obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it. This is right set of mind needed to succeed. You need to continue burning with the desire to achieve your set goals.

Success is having achieved that which you determine you will do!” you determine what success is for you. It is not based on what other people are say about you but what you say about yourself. In whatever, we do or intend to achieve the mind plays a very central and critical role. Change starts by changing our minds. Success comes by changing our minds. As you grow in your character always remember to “standout tall and be counted”.
