In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia.” ~ Unknown. Goal setting is the one activity that sets apart achievers from those who are surviving or just getting by. By goal setting we are enabled to create the future we want to happen rather than live the future that others want to happen. Goal setting enables us to take greater charge of our daily lives.

In this article I outline some of the ways to help set reachable goals.

You can base your goals on anything you want, although the chances of your success are significantly increased if firstly you base them on your strengths and secondly on your opportunities in the field your are currently under taking. It is very important to know your strengths and weakness before undertaking any goal setting venture as this will help you decide what naturally flows from within you.

Do some self research such as a personal SWOT, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. When conducting a personal research note the following:-

  • Your strengths are the things you are good at and enjoy doing. Using your strengths for goal setting will usually provide some sort of motivation as you go on.
  • Weaknesses are the things you have to do, but these are things you dislike or make slow progress at them.
  • Opportunities are the external circumstances you expect to arise, create or already exist and expect them to aid you moving towards your set goals.
  • Threats are those external circumstances that are very unlikely to help you move forward and would probably set you backwards.

Whilst we must keep on working to improve our weaknesses and keep a close eye on the threats it is very important that our goal setting should be based on our strengths and opportunities.

Keep your dreams alive

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt. The greatest achievement was, at first, and for a time, but a dream. You must realize that all who have achieved great success first did a certain amount of dreaming, hoping, wishing, DESIRING, and PLANNING before they succeeded.  You may as well know, also that every great leader, from the dawn of civilization down to the present, was and is, a dreamer. One of the factors that restrict many people from reaching their full potential is the belief that we should not aim for big dreams. Yet all evidence for most successful people is that they have kept their big dreams alive and have fully pursued them without giving up. It is very important to keep your dreams alive and to pursue them without giving up.

I have learnt to break down my dreams into smaller achievable goals and to always make changes that improve my chances of achieving them. Remember that big dreams come with greater responsibility and that “big goals attract big resources like a magnet”. Having dreams makes my life more interest to live. Yes sometimes days do not turn out as planned but what is life without challenges? I do not give up just because the day has not turned out as hoped for, but rather I focus on the positive things that come my way.

Abraham Lincoln dreamed of freedom for the black slaves, he kept his dream alive and put it into action, and barely missed living to see a united North and South translate his dream into reality. That is how important it is to keep your dreams alive and acting on them.

Write down your goals

The best way to keep your dreams alive is to write them down and read them every often to constantly remind you of the bigger picture. There is something different when you write down your dreams as opposed to just keeping them in your head. DO NOT depend on your memory alone. I have a note book that has all the dreams intend to achieve; this is like the blue print of my life. Written goals have a way of transforming wishes into wants, can’ts into cans, dreams into plans and plans into reality.

The act of writing clarifies your goals and helps you keep a record of your dreams and goals. Writing down your dreams acts as a commitment to your goals. This will eventually aid you when you are doing your daily goal setting activities as these will be tailored to the overall bigger picture. You can also add reasons to your written down goals so as to give you motivation and help check your progress on a regular basis. So don’t just think it INK IT. One of the best aid I have discovered is the habit of daily goal setting.

Pursuing your goals with passion and desire

The driving force behind your goal achievement is your passion and desire. You must desire your goals constantly, vividly and with a burning passion, knowing that you have already achieved them and are now working towards realising them. When you do, it is almost impossibly to fail at what you are aiming for. The importance of pursuing our goals with passion cannot be over emphasised that is, why it is most wise and very cardinal that we set our goals based on our strengths and what we enjoy doing. Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich says that “when a man really DESIRES a thing so deeply that he is willing to stake his entire future on a single turn of the wheel in order to get it, he is sure to win”.

Goal setting is central to maximising and realising our potential because it enables us create something unique and new in our lives it also allows us to feed our goal oriented brain and puts us in control of our future. Set your goals as big as you can this will help challenge and stretch your capacity and ability. There are many ways that can be use to help with goal setting the above are just but some of the ways I have personally devised to help me in my endeavours. Remember to also build your goals around your strengths and the things that you enjoy doing. “standout tall and be counted”.

Goal setting tips

People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals – that is, goals that do not inspire them” ~ Tony Robins. In this article I am talking about how to set your goals into manageable ones. Before you start to set your goals you need to have a written down life’s purpose. What do you want to be in your life? Goal setting is an open secret known by top-caliber individuals including successful businessmen and women and all types of achievers in all the different disciplines’ of life.  Goal setting gives you both short and long term motivation and keeps you focused. Your goals help you to set focus on the acquisition of required knowledge and to plan and organize your resources and your time so that you can get the best out of your life.

Setting clearly defined short term and long term goals will enable you to measure your progress and achieve personal satisfaction once you have successfully met your them (goals). Charting your progress will also enable you to actually see the stages of completion leading to the actual realization of your life’s purpose. This eliminates the feeling of a long and pointless grind towards achieving your goals. Your self-confidence and level of competence will also improve as you will be more aware of your capabilities as you complete or achieve your goals.

Settings goals will involve deciding what you really want to do with your intended life’s purpose and what short and long term goals you need to achieve it. Then you have to break down your goals into the smaller and manageable targets that you must complete in your way to achieving your life’s purpose. Once you have your list waste no time in tackling your goals.

A good way to have a manageable list is to have a daily and weekly set of tasks. By doing this you will be always in the position of going towards your intended life’s purpose. Everyday will give you the opportunity to fulfill a certain goal giving you the feeling of accomplishment.

Here are some pointers that should be taken into consideration in setting goals and achieving them.

Attitude plays a very big role in setting and achieving your goals. You must ask yourself if any part of you or your mind is holding you back towards completing your simplest goals. If there are any part of your behavior that is being a hindrance or puts your plans into disarray? e.g alcohol consumption. If you do have problems in these areas then the immediate thing to do is to address this problem.

Careers are made by good time management practice. Failing in a career is often attributed to bad time management. Careers require a lot from an individual which often makes the career the life of the individual. Plan how far you want to go into your career.

Education is key in achieving your goals. If your goals require you to have a certain kind of degree or require a certain specialization or demand a certain skill to be developed, make plans in getting the appropriate education. You will not regret it. After, all education is about the only thing that you will go to the grave with. It is personal.

Your family should never be left out of your plans. If you are just starting out then you have to decide if you want to be a parent or when you want to be a parent. You also have to know if you really would be a good parent and how well would you relate to extended family members

Personal financial situations also play a major role in achieving your goals. Have a realistic goal on how much you really want to earn. You also must be able to create plans or stages by which you will be able to reach your earnings potential.

Physically gifted individuals may be able to achieve sports related goals like being in the National Basketball Association or National Soccer Teams. Determining your physical capabilities should be one of your priorities. Physical limitations could however be conquered with proper planning.

As the saying goes -‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, or something to that effect, is by all means true down to the last the letter. Giving yourself a little pleasure should be included into your plans.

To start achieving your lifetime goals, set a quarter of a century plan, then break it down to 5 year plans then break it down again to 1 year plans, then 6 month plans then monthly plans, then weekly, then daily. Then create a things-to-do list for the day. Always review your plans and prepare for contingencies and always remember to “standout tall and be counted” in whatever you do.

Stay focused on your goals

Setting goals and targets is the easy part of personal development and self growth. One of the most difficult things to do in life is to remain focused on our set goals. This usually determines our levels of success. I always set my self targets and goals on a monthly basis but, I must mention that not until recently did I discover the formula for staying focused. It is pointless in life to set targets that we do not intend to achieve neither is it beneficial to us, it is a share waste of time and effort. Remember effort is energy use your energy wisely. A tip when setting targets is that you must make sure that you set targets that are realistic and achievable.

Why set targets?

You may ask why set targets? They help us achieve our desired dreams and goals. Life is growth and growth is change. For one to have meaningful growth one needs a properly planned and executed plan. I believe that targets are the guiding maps towards the attainment of our intended purpose’s in life. I use my targets as a measure towards the achievement of my intended goal see related article. I will be very honest with you that not all targets I have set have been realistic and achievable, but over the years I have learnt to give my self targets and goals that are actually realistic and achievable. I still have though, some targets that I have been carrying over for sometime and are yet to be attained.

Setting targets helps me gauge the level and speed at which I am moving towards the attainment of my desired goals. But remember that Personal Development is not a competition. Never compete with anyone in your quest for personal growth.

Stick to your plan

Setting targets is the easier part of personal growth, staying focused and sticking to them is the hard part. Once you have set out your intended purpose in life start working towards it. Do not wait until you have a clear picture cause it will never be clear until you start working on it. The more you work your plan the clearer it becomes. You will be encouraged to stick to your plans as you set realistic and achievable targets. It really feels good when you set your self a target and have achieved it. Yes there will be some conditions that we will encounter that are negative to us but always remember that all conditions and experiences that come to us are for out benefit. We gain strength in proportion to the effort expended.

Encourage yourself every time you drift away from your plan by reminding yourself that to live is not a blessing but to live well. “An unexplained life is not worth living” just “as an unplanned life is not worth examining”. I believe that unless we have a plan for our lives, we don’t know what we are trying to achieve. There is great reward in planning our lives and sticking to our plans.

You are unique. You ought to do what no one can do. Your destiny is not predetermined. You create your own destiny every day, not by chance but by choice. Destiny is an achievement. Yes you come across bad situations, just know that there is always good even in bad situations. We can train our selves to see good and to do good in the darkest moments of our lives.

While some people just want to get by, you must choose to thrive. You must have an understanding of contentment and happiness in order to achieve inner peace. Staying focused on your goals will ensure that you live a happy life. This is because you will be doing what you enjoy most in your life. A well lived life is not an accident. It is hard work. Be honest with yourself and know the difference between your needs and your wants. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.
