Responsibility is a Source of Happiness

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain.

Happiness is not by chance, but by choice” – Jim Rohn. There is a very big relationship between taking more responsibility and being happy. These two thing are intertwined. The more responsible you are the more you enjoy happiness. Being responsible can be a source of great happiness. I have been doing a simple study on people who are seemingly enjoying happiness and have noticed that among the most common factors they share, is that they have taken up more responsibilities in their circles. These are the people who are in the driving seat of their lives.

Following up on this study I decided to take more responsibility, firstly with my own life. Yes, my own life. Most of us are not responsible for our own lives. We live under the shadows of other people. We only want to take responsibility when the right outcomes are achieved, sometimes even for the things that should not even be credited to us. I have seen this type of behaviour especially with our friends in the political world. There is a tendency of wanting to be praised for other peoples efforts.

But also amongst my peers. There is this tendency of only wanting to take credit when things are right, but we do not even want to take full responsibility when our actions are wrong. We always want to blame someone else or give excuses.

Taking Responsibility Puts You in the Drivers Seat

Look, when you take full responsibility for your life, you simply takeover the driving seat. You are in charge. You will accept when things are bad. Being in the driving seat is usually a source of happiness. It gives me joy when a plan comes together. You are happiest when things go according to your plan. If you are in charge you will quickly put up corrective measures when things are drifting away.  “Action may not bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action” – William James.

Taking up responsibility is also an indication of being a good leader. Remember, we are all leaders of our own lives and I believe that at some point you will be made to account for the actions you take in life. The quicker you realise it the better for you.

Personal growth and development is all about taking responsibility for all your actions and not just some. If you want to achieve serious self growth you need to start taking charge of your life. Do not let your mood be determined by other people, they may dampen it. This means taking control of your thoughts, as they are responsible for your emotions; taking control of your emotions as these may lead you to act on impulse. Usually, your predominant thoughts will dictate the state of your mood.

Make a Conscious Decision to be Responsible

The best time to consciously make decisions is in the morning. I have made it a point that every morning before my day gets hectic a decision is made that I will stay focused, be happy and responsible for my actions. Look, no one will make a decision for you unless you approve of it. If you live an unhappy life its your decision; if you are not in charge of your life its your decision. All in all the power to decide is within you. Learn to use it properly.

There is something about doing certain things early in the morning. Your mind just remains focused on them. I usually read through my writing ideas every night before sleeping and every morning when I wake up. Ever since I started this practice, my productivity levels have just been going up. How I wish this had started sometime back. Am writing and publishing articles on a regular basis.

I have taken full responsibility for my actions both positive and negative. On the days that I am not writing I take time to improve my writing skills by reading; researching, listening and watching motivational videos among other things. Yes, sometimes I have to force myself to do these things but I have made it a point that they are done. This is all, is a result of a single decision I make in the morning and that is to be responsible.

Sharing is Caring

They say sharing is caring. Some people find it had to share anything. If they have to share, it is those things that have no meaning and value to them. In other words they share what they call scraps. Well, I guess its human nature but I feel that it is wrong. I read somewhere that all habits are learnable good or bad. This is true. If you can learn bad habits you can also un learn them and replace them with good habits.

There is always something you can share. Sometimes people have lame excuses for not sharing. You will be amazed that the little you think you have some people do not have. I practice an open door policy and have taught my children to always learn to share. I know that sometimes its had, but we must share anyhow. Sharing does not necessarily mean giving out handouts in form of money, it could just be sharing your time to help out someone in need of your skills.

I know that if we all developed and practiced the habit of sharing, the world would be a much much better place. Sharing is also a source of happiness. Let me ask you a question. How do you feel when you see the joy on someone’s face all because you shared something with them? Exactly, that’s why you must share unconditionally more often. When you share do not expect anything back, you are not in control of them. If you expect anything in return more often than not you will be disappointed.

Conclusion

I would like to end by encouraging you to develop the habit of taking responsibility for your life, accept that you are the master of your destiny. Take charge and live a happy life. Learn to also take extra responsibilities and share your gifts with the world. “Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul” – Democritus. Standout tall and be happy.

There are two things to aim at in life: first to get what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind has achieved the second” – Logan Pearshall Smith. Everyday is a beautiful day that is filled with joy and happiness, but also everyday is a beautiful day that is filled with sadness. If every day is a gift why do you then decide to live a life of sadness. We live our lives based off, the decisions we made in the past. That is why it is better to make the right decisions today that will affect our future.

Am not perfect but everyday that I wake-up, I thank God almighty for giving me another opportunity to better my life. I believe that for as long as you are alive you have the chance of improving your life and that of the people around you and beyond.

Yes, I know you may not be in a position to do the things you want to do now, but you have the chance because you are alive. One thing I have noticed is that we as human beings take life for granted. We do not take time to appreciate the fact that we are alive and in pretty much good health. If you are reading this article you are even more privileged than most people. It simply means that you have access to a computer and the internet.

However, you are accessing them, these things cost money. Do you know how many people cannot even come close to think about having the privilege you have? Yet you continue living a life of sadness. I know that you may not have all you desire, but at least give thanks that you are alive. Life is not just about having all you desire but living happily and enjoying it.

Take Responsibility for Your Decisions

The biggest weakness we have as human beings is not taking full responsibility for our decisions. We only want to take responsibility when things are going right and people are praising us. I believe that taking responsibility for our mistakes is a sign of maturity. I am proud to take full responsibility for my personal decisions. Sometimes its difficult to accept that am in a certain situation because of my decisions but that’s just the truth. If I had made better choices I could not have found my self in difficult circumstances in the first place. Ever since I decided to be taking full responsibility for my decisions, life is more fulfilling and enjoyable. What this has done is that, before I make a major decision I think about it very hard.

I have also learnt that deciding to be happy early in the morning makes my day a lot easier to navigate. I know that sometimes people want to mess it up for me, but because a decision was made in the morning to be happy, I stick with it. My mind is pre-conditioned to stay happy and this flows to my emotions. They say our thoughts influence our emotions. When you decide on something and you stick with it, nothing can shake you. Yes things may be thrown at you, but you have the resolve to be happy and you will be, even during the bad and difficult times.

One of the things I do when am confronted with a potentially explosive situation is to just smile and walk away if I can or better still just keep quiet. Its hard to just walk away at first especially if you are hot tempered, but with practice it becomes easier.

There is no need to allow people to annoy you. Life is too short to be lived sad. God has given us the ability to choose freely. The power to decide is entirely in your hands. I like to make a comparison with say going out to have fun with friends. Most of the time when something goes wrong we blame the company we were hanging around with for the decisions we made. Yes they may have played a part but the final say, lies in our hands. If you say no to taking part in unwanted situation you can. This also goes to being in a toxic relationship. You can either decide to continue in it or you can get out.

Learn to Enjoy Your Life

Life is too short, learn to enjoy it. You can only enjoy life if you decide to and this decision is entirely yours. There are many ways to enjoying life, one of which is to do the things that make you happy more often. Most of us do not enjoy our lives simply because of the jobs we do. If your daily job does not make you happy you are most likely living a sad life.

The happiest people are those with jobs that make them happy. You can be paid as much money as possible but without happiness the job is meaningless. You would be probably contributing more if you found a job that makes you happy. Now, a job does not necessarily mean being employed by someone or working for a big corporation. You could be self employed and earning a decent living by doing the things that make you happy. “Be absolutely determined to enjoy what you do” – Gerry Sikorski.

That is why it very important to know your life’s purpose earlier in your life. This helps in choosing careers that will enhance and help you achieve your goals. One of the ways to know what your life’s purpose is, is to list down the things that easily flow from you. The things that you do with much ease and less effort. These are the things that could point you to what your life’s purpose is. It could be that you are gifted at making people laugh, well go ahead and be a professional comedian. The idea is start living and enjoy your working life. After all we spend most of our time working.

If you have made mistakes in the past like me, don’t worry, there is still room for change. You can make the change right now and decide to do the right things for the rest of your life. And besides who has never made a mistake in their life? Forget the mistakes you made, treat them as a learning point and move on. You cannot change the past but can positively influence your future beginning this moment by making the right decisions.

Conclusion

You don’t pay the price for success. You enjoy the price for success” – Zig Ziglar. I would like to conclude by advising you to made a decision to start living a happy life. Get your power back by taking responsibility for your decisions. We all fall down, but we get up and press on with life. Until next time have a blessed and happy life.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around” ~ Leo Buscaglia. We are all blessed and posses skills and abilities that nobody else possesses quite like we do. God made each and every one of us unique and have a role to play in the world. Just like the body has different parts that make it whole the world has different components that make it complete. Those components represent you and I.

We are all gifted with unique talents and gifts, whether this is talent to show on the world stage, or on a small stage as someone who makes a difference, does not necessarily matter. What is important is for one to play their part and not deprive the world of their talents.

All these talents and abilities if not expressed are just potential. Since we are all blessed with these unique talents the question is how do we make the most of our personal potential? Let’s start by defining or rather establishing the meaning of the word “potential”. According to the oxford dictionary “potential is having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future“. if you have something then you have something to show. There is no point in showing something that you do not have it is not possible. You may not currently know what your talents are until you fully understand and explore your personality. If you have to fulfill your dreams it is imperative that you learn how to maximise your potential. The following methods might just be the answer if you have been on the quest to fulfilling your potential.

Happiness and Goals

[adrotate banner=”2″]

“Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life. In Its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence; The bliss of growth; The glory of action; The splendor of beauty; For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a Vision: But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day!” ~ From the Sanskrit. One of the greatest hindrances for failing to maximise our potential is living an unhappy life. You see, happiness is a choice. You choose either to be happy or otherwise. I have learned that happiness is an antidote for success.

From the time of great philosophers such as Aristotle happiness has been linked to the achievement of goals. That is the more reason why we find so much happiness and pleasure in the work that makes us achieve our goals. Happiness and goal setting cannot be substituted for anything if you have to maximise your potential. Living a happy life will surely motivate you into maximizing your personal potential. Click here to read more on happiness. There is no success without happiness. I think that what drives most of us to succeed is happiness. Happiness therefore is a very important driver to maximizing one’s potential.

Do it your self
“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to my fellow-creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again” ~ William Penn. Self development is a do it yourself skill and do it yourself activity. However, you look at it, if you have to maximize your potential; you have to learn how to do it yourself. I have noticed that most of us would rather not do even the easiest of tasks for fear of failure. Yet, we would rather be credited with someone else’s success. From my working experience most of us do not want to take responsibility for our actions especially if they are negative ones.

I believe that to maximize your potential you need to learn and know how get the basics done. I do not know about you but I enjoy doing most of the things on my own. It actually gives me great satisfaction and pleasure when I have accomplished something on my own. I am basically a do it yourself person. This does not mean that I do everything, no no no. I am very much aware of my skills set and know my limitations. If you are in a leading position you must learn how to delegate and supervise your subordinates. One of the greatest skill you need to posses as a leader is the skill of delegation and supervision. As a leader you must learn to give direction and motivation to your followers.

Create your destiny
“That a man can change himself, improve himself, re-create himself, control his environment, and master his own destiny is the conclusion of every mind who is wide-awake to the power of right thought in constructive action” ~ Larsen. “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not something to be waited for, but rather something to be achieved” ~ William Jennings Bryan. Maximising your potential entails creating your own destiny. We live our destiny by the little things that we do every day. Always remember that your destiny is not a destination but rather the journey that you live.

Philosophers and great thinkers have in the last centuries pondered and puzzled over the extent to which our lives are in our own hands and the extent to which they are pre-ordained. There are many thoughts and arguments but the main thought that comes out very clearly and distinct is that we can all set ourselves on the path we want by making up our minds to it. This has been proven that even in the most limiting societies we still have a free will to try. For if you are trying to achieve something then that is your first step to creating your destiny. If you are like me and are learning to maximise your potential then you are living your destiny.

Improve yourself
“Rely on your own strength of body and soul. Take for your star self-reliance, faith, honesty and industry. Don’t take too much advice — keep at the helm and steer your own ship, and remember that the great art of commanding is to take a fair share of the work. Fire above the mark you intend to hit. Energy, invincible determination with the right motive, are the levers that move the world” ~ Noah Porter. Even though nature compels us to improve, there are two opposing forces at play; to stay where we are and consolidated what you have gained or to explore what is still possible to achieve and know how far we can go.

[adrotate group=”1″]
The majority of us would rather not venture with the second force. We would rather take the safe and secure one, yet continue wondering what we might have missed out. This to me is the situation to most of us. We sit on our potential and die with it. Those who take the second risky path go on adventures seeking to maximise what they posses. This though comes at a cost and it is worth paying for. Have you ever noticed that the good things in life are not free? If you are not exploring your talents then I can assure you that you have taken the comfort zone. Get out there and explore your talents. You might just be the answer the world has been waiting for. I know the most common excuse that most of us have; I have no money or resources. If you think your idea that is good enough go for it and start living your dream.

Conclusion
I will end here for now. Lookout for part two in which I concluded with the remaining four ways to maximise your potential. Remember to always standout tall and be counted“.

Do more things that make you happy

This is my first article for this year and I thought that I should write an article that will help you stay happy for the rest of the year. “A man is successful if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do” ~ Bob Dylan. Perhaps this is the best description of success for me. The key factor is enjoying doing what you want to do. Sometimes the obvious escapes us.

Notice that whenever you are enjoying what you are doing, you do a better and outstanding job, you have more fun, and feel a certain sense of ease delight and mastery. We become better at something because of the time we spend doing it. In other words the saying practice makes perfect is true. I read somewhere that if we spend two hours a day doing something that we choose to do that makes us happy, within five years we can become an expert. That is why it is very important to have a job that you enjoy. There is no joy in doing a job that does not make you happy.

The challenge
I want to challenge you to find a little something that makes you happy every day. If you are currently working and you feel you do not enjoy your work, well before you think about quitting look at how you can improve your current situation and learn from it. Life is too short to live worrying every day. Besides most of us spend a lot of our time at our work places, why not make them a happy place. I have been in employment before that I dreaded going for work every day and I know what am talking about. The best solution is to make the best out of it. Remember it is essential that you learn to enjoy life there is much more to enjoyment that being sad. I know for sure that happiness makes you look younger.

You and only you alone are in charge of discovering then deciding what you want to do more of that which makes you happy. There are certain things that have to be done. To achieve happiness, make a commitment to making the best out of every situation. Work with pride do your job as if there is no tomorrow. Challenge yourself to always go an extra mile if you are in employment. This will certainly make you stand out from your fellow workers and earn you accolades. If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased and that is you.

Happiness is infectious
Marcus Aurelius concluded that “very little is needed to make a happy life”. Indeed happiness is a state of mind. A happy person always has a positive mental attitude. Make is a point in life to decide to be happy. I know that you come across trials and tribulations but the more you practice to do the things that make you happy the more relaxed and the more inner peace you will have. Happiness has a tendency of spilling over to the others around you.

I have a friend who is always happy. There are very few times I have seen him sad and he is such a huge source of greatness for me. Every time we meet up you feel like you just want to be with this guy more and more. I asked him what his secret to happiness was and he simply said I make a decision every morning to be happy and try to do more of the things that make me happy. This to me is one of the best formulas to happiness. Turn your sad moments to learning moments and reflect on them. Many of the times we are sad because we have allowed others to do so. There are times in all of our lives when we have to focus on sad and painful situations. But in the big picture, when life is running more smoothly, we have to remember to get back in the habit of making choices that will provide opportunities for us to do more and more things that make us happy.

Happiness in service
I believe that some of the happiest people are those in the service industry. If you are in this industry and are not happy please quit. I know that some of the people join the service industry for the sake of a pay cheque. These are the ones that should leave the industry and allow people with a natural inclination for serving humanity to do it with dignity and honor. I have experienced some of the worst treatment by medical personal yet this is a noble profession with a calling to serving lives.

In reality it feels very nice and pleasant and you feel useful after giving a helping hand. I have noticed that, even in my little kids they enjoy giving a hand in whatever I am doing. When they take this opportunity they are very joyful and happy. I want to believe that we all have a part to play in making the world a better pace and it all starts with you and me being a happy people. Service is honourable. When we continue to do more things that make us happy, we will become happier. This gift of well-being is the great reward of living the good life. Each one of us has a choice about how to love the world in our own unique way. “I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves…The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth” ~ Albert Einstein.

Conclusion
Laughter is the best medicine” ~ Unknown. Every day of your life make a decision to be happy. Wake up and declare happiness to be a part of your day. Yes you shall encounter sad moments but treat them as stepping stones. Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a happy world where everyone is playing there part and are happily doing it? I believe it can be done if we all played our part honestly and happily. Stay happy and remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.
