When You Have the Will, the Sky is the Limit

Motivational Quotes

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe” – Anatole France.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference” – Serenity Prayer

Cease to ask what the morrow will bring forth, and set down as gain each day that Fortune grants” – Horace.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called present” – Unkonwn

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

The capability of conscious choice and decision and intention; is called the will; “the exercise of their volition we construe as revolt”– George Meredith. In other words we all exercise the will to do things at our own volition. Everyone of us has the will to do something.

The power of choosing; the faculty or endowment of the soul by which it is capable of choosing; the faculty or power of the mind by which we decide to do or not to do; the power or faculty of preferring or selecting one of two or more objects; is the will.

If you want to achieve something meaningful with your life, develop a strong desire for it. If you want money develop a strong desire for money. When you have the will to achieve something, nothing can stop you. Nothing can stand in your way; only the sky is the limit.

God gave each and every one of us the determination to succeed. To succeed you need to have the desire; the determination; the resolve and the will to take action. The will is what powers you. It is what drives you to continue taking action, that is why they call it the will power.

The strength of your mind should always be kept at optimum level. To achieve this you need to feed your mind with the right material. You need to have the right mental attitude for every situation that you encounter. If you want peace in your life, your mind must always be thinking peace.

The most common mistake most people make is not possessing what they want, in their mind. You will not achieve personal development if your mind is not thinking personal development. Your mind is the centre of all creation. You are who you are because of what you think about most of the times.

How can you enjoy happiness if your mind is always thinking negatively? change your mind and you will surely experience change.

Do Not Limit Yourself

The biggest obstacle to your progress is yourself. Often times we obstruct ourselves from reaching our full potential. We give up when we are faced with challenges. But do you realise that the darkest hour is just before dawn?

When you are about to hit Gold that’s the time when things look like they are crumbling down. It is usually the most darkest of periods. But I have learnt that it is actually the time to hold on even more. It is time to persevere.

Look, to reach your full potential you must move from the bottom going up. You must move from being a doubter to being a believer. Personal growth demands that you learn the ropes from the bottom up. You do not start climbing a tree from the top.

If you climb from the top, the only other way to go is either side ways or down. If you are going side ways it means there is no growth taking place and of course downs means you are falling.

I have learned that before every growth level there are challenges to be overcome. These challenges are a test of your character and the will to persist. They are building you for what is coming next. However, you need to know how to navigate through them.

In my life I have struggled with so many things, but I have not allowed my struggles to hold me down from pursuing my personal objectives. I have pledged to do everything I can to achieve my personal objectives.

In dark times I always ask God to help me change the things I can change. This way I concentrate my energies on my I can change and allow God to do the rest. He is always faithful. “The men who succeed are the efficient few. They are the few who have the ambition and will power to develop themselves” – Herbert N. Casson.

Celebrate Your Small Victories

We all have experienced success in one thing or the other. The key to staying focused on your goals, which is the bigger picture, is to celebrate your small victories. If possible document them and make a reference to them every now and again.

This will always help you stay motivated and encouraged to work extra hard to experience the feeling of success again. I have found that completing a task on time is very fulfilling for me. Am very happy and proud of myself every time I produce an article for this website.

That nice feeling of having to complete a task drives me to even do more. Yes, I know that sometimes I get bogged down with other things, but I always look forward to being inspired to writing again.

Success is made up of the small victories that we pickup along the way. You should learn to give yourself a pat on the back when you have achieved or completed a task that you set out to do. Completing the small tasks leads you to your main goal.

Conclusion

“If I had to select one quality and one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick persistence and determination. The will to endure to the end, to get knocked down seventy times and get up off the floor saying, Here comes number seventy one” – Richard M. Devos. Always remember that when you have the will, the sky is the limit.

You Have the Potential for Improvement

Motivational Quotes

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe” – Anatole France.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference” – Serenity Prayer

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

The potential for improvement lies within you. We all have the power to change and make improvements to our lives. No matter where you are or what you have done before, there is always room and opportunities for growth, the choice is yours. All growth is from within, but it has to be nurtured. Take a seed for example, given the right nutrients and conditions. It sprouts to become a tree and bears fruit. Whether that fruit is good,  depends on the consistency of the nurturing.

Exactly the same with you, but more so that you have the choice and are in control of what you take in. You decide where you want to go and what you want to do. In other words you have a free will. You have the will to be or not to be, the will to do or not to do. The earlier you realise in life, that the power and the potential for improvement is within, the better for you to lay down a solid foundation for yourself. The more you realise that the authority and ability for improvement is within, the more easily you chart your own scope for growth.

But unless and only if you tap into this inner resource, personal improvement will always remain potential. That is the difference between successful and average people. The most successful people have known how to tap into this power to realise their full potential. We have heard about sportsmen and women who were highly rated in the earlier stages of their careers but never got to fulfill their full potential. They say the greatest tragedy of the average man is that they are buried with their never sung songs.

Be a Student of Yourself

This may sound absurd to many, yet it is true. If you have to succeed you need to continuously be a student of yourself. Yes, a student of yourself. Take time to fully, understand your emotions, your desires and your thought patterns. Know your weakness and your strengths. Funny as it may sound, but there are people who do not even know what there weaknesses and strengths are. Learn everything you need to know about yourself.

We are all made differently, I believe that God does not make duplicates. What may work for me might not necessarily work for you. Study and know yourself, I have found out that writing down helps me to remember a lot of stuff. I am not super intelligent so I cannot totally rely on my memory only. That is why I carry a note book with me most of the times. In this note book there are so many things written down.

I am constantly writing down ideas and the things am learning every time. I have attended so many meetings, and it is amazing to notice that many people do not take down notes. Worse still they do not carry note books to meetings. Well I guess it is just me, but I have noted that taking down notes works wonders for me. Every time I sit down to review my notes, it all begins to flow back. This has really helped improve my productivity.

Being a student of yourself entails trying out so many things and finding the things that work best for you. Not everything will work for you. Like I recently discovered that playing soft classical music in the back ground while doing some work, actually works well for me.

The study of your self is a life long process. It means that you must continuously pay attention to yourself. This process also requires some personal time. A time when you can sit down alone and reflect, a time when you can introspect. I usually do this early in the morning and late at night just before going to bed.

Keep Your Eyes on the Ball

You cannot hit a target you cannot see. Life is like a game of football, the general idea is to score more goals than your opponents. In a game of football the target is to hit the ball past the other goalkeeper. To do that you must ensure that your team keeps possession of the ball. This can only be achieved by keeping your eyes on the movement of the ball and ensuring that you have control of the ball.

In life however, you set your own targets and this you must do. If you have not yet found your life’s purpose I strongly encourage you to do so right now and begin to work towards achieving it. Unlike in a football match were you outscore your opponents, in life you will fail many times. Your goal is to keep moving. The closer you move towards achieving your life’s purpose the more progressive you are. This is the only way you can measure your progress. Remember that personal development should be measured only by you and not outsiders.

Just like in the game of football your opponents are also trying hard to score, you must be prepared to face adversities in life. Do not let what people say about you, to be a distraction. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and you have no control over what people think of you. Consider people as spectators watching a football match, they can only cheer and grumble depending on what they see. They have no control of the game, but you have control of the game called life. It is entirely and squarely in your hands.

What matters most is what you think about yourself. That should be what propels you. If you think you are successful well and good enjoy your success. Just keep your mind focused on the task at hand. Work to improve on it and give it your best shot.

Conclusion

We all have the ability to improve our lives. This potential for improvement is God given. God gave us the power and will to decide what we want for our lives. “Consult not your fears, but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you have tried and failed in, but for what is still possible for you to do” – Pope John XXIII. Remember to always standout tall and be counted.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

Everything that you want to be or achieve in life, begins with what you have. You cannot give what you do not have. “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them” – Henry David Thoreau. The biggest challenge the average person has is starting with what they have. Most of the times we want to wait until we have accumulated a certain amount of money before we invest in an idea; we want to wait until we start earning a certain amount of money before we can start saving. But here is the thing, distractions will always be there. Worse still the opportunity may just pass you by. Yes, you may not succeed at the first attempt. But the experience, you will have gained is very valuable for your next project or idea.

Most people who succeed start with the little they have and grow their resources as they progress. In fact, some of the people that have gone on to be successful started with nothing. If you want to start a business, resources do not necessarily mean finances. Resources could just be the skills you have or even the idea you are harbouring is a resource. One of the biggest resources that is over looked by start-up entrepreneurs’  is the human capital.

Many of the times we always want to justify our fears. We are scared of failure; embarrassment and rejection. Justifying our fears is having a poverty mentality. Yes, I call it justifying, our poverty mentality because this is most common among poor people. I cannot start this business because its time consuming; who says being in business does not require your time? Stop giving excuses and get on with your life.

Just Get Started

The company Nike have a very good motto that I like so much “just do it”.  Stop justifying your poverty mentality and get started with whatever, it is that you want to achieve. Look, before starting this website, I had so many excuses. What will people think about me; I am not sure if I can generate enough writing ideas, were some of the lame excuses I was giving. Well a few years down the line am still writing. This site has over 120 original articles published with an average of about 1000 words per posting. I now, have even discovered more ways to keep generating new ideas. Yes, am aware that for now this site may not be as popular as I would want, but slowly and with time it will achieve the intended goals.

When you start, things begin to fall in place. Your mind begins to direct you in a certain way. By doing what you love everyday, you attract the right resources. It is entirely up you to harness them. It is the beginning that is always difficult, but as you go on you grow in confidence. As you grow in confidence, you grow in stature and this gives you even more confidence. Do not be afraid to change your methods.

With every article I publish my confidence is growing and I believe that even my writing skills are being sharpened. My thinking is much more clearer and my plans for this website are even more refined and clearer. Developing ideas has become even more easier.

Today as I write this article I have more than 20 ideas that need to be actualised. Everyday, I keep adding onto this list. My ideas are ahead of my writing skills and ability. It was not like this, a few years ago when I was starting this website. It was a struggle and even when ideas would pop up writing them was still a challenge. But, over time writing has become more easier.

One Day You Will be Proud

Sometimes it seems not fashionable to start small.  The bible says do not despise the days of your humble beginnings. We only admire business empire’s when they are big. When they become house hold names. Yet, we forget that Rome was not built in one day. These same big corporations that are now flourishing started small. Some of them started in backyards and garages. Alas, the owners are now proud when they sit back and look at how far they have come.

It takes time and hard work to build something worthwhile. Imagine the joy you get when you see something of your creation flourishing. I cannot wait to see this site grow to those levels. Am still very proud of it and proud of my self. For now my job is to continue doing what am currently doing.

Improve on Your Skills Set

Once you start and get going with whatever, you intend to do, make time to improve your skill set. This is important. Devote your time and energy to ensure that you achieve your dreams. If your intention is financial freedom, improve your financial management skills. If it means taking further education just do it. With the advent of the internet and advancement in technology, education today has become more accessible than ever.

Improving your skill set could be the difference to earning more income and moving up the ladder quickly. Now, to improve your skill set does not necessarily mean acquiring formal education. I know that it is important to be formally educated. But you can improve your skill set in many ways. You could find materials such as books, audios and videos on the internet. Currently am reading materials on how to improve my writing skills am not formally enrolled in any college or university.

It is safe for me to say am getting an education. I know for sure that reading more will enhance my writing skills and off course this will have more benefits for my readers. The more sharper my skill set the more quality articles I generate. This obviously translates to enjoying my life even more.

Conclusion

You have within you right now, everything you need to deal with whatever the world can throw at you” – Brian Tracy. Successful people start with what they have. They do not wait for the so called right time. They strike when the iron is still hot. I guess the right time to take your first step is now. You never know what the morrow will bring forth. Remember to “standout and start with what you have”.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

Welcome to part 3 of “the 9 must have life skills”.  This is the final part of the 3 series. Let’s start with a quick recap of the past two articles. In part one I mentioned the first three life skills namely, influencing; delegation, and persuasion.

We went on to describe these in detail click here to read part 1. In part two I talked about the next three life skills namely; coaching, feedback and conflict handling click here to read part 2.A general is just as good or just as bad as the troops under his command make him” ~ General Douglas MacArthur. “A leader is a dealer in hope” ~ Napoleon Bonaparte.

The last three life skills are the ones that expose your inner being, to the outside world. Remember you work from the inside out and not vice versa. You are made of what is inside you.

You must know that all growth is from within. You cannot give out what you do not have. People will only judge you from what they see and how you present yourself to them. I will now present the life skills as below:

Presentation

Presentation is an area that can be a challenge to many. We all make judgement by seeing or rather analysing the presentation by a colleague or friend. In my own humble definition, I regard presentation as way to send and receive information in a way that makes people want to hear what you are saying or doing.

Presentation can come in many different forms. In fact, we are always presenting ourselves on a daily basis, be it at work or to our customers, friends, spouses, children and the list is endless.

Presentation is about getting your message across a section of society. In doing this, you should ask yourself what you want to achieve. A good leader should also be a good presenter.

If you are in leadership this is the skill that will influence your team members to appreciate or agree with your philosophies. The key to being a good presenter is knowing what you want to achieve.

To effectively get your message across, it is important to consider these two perspectives;

  •  What do you want to say?
  • What is the expectation of your audience?

Dale Canergie, once said, “there are always three speeches, for every one you actually gave. The one you practiced, the one you gave, and the one you wished you gave”.

As I mentioned before, the skill of presentation is mainly to deal with the public. The public in this instance are the people you come into contact with every day. If you want to create a lasting impression on people you need to be a good presenter.

Facilitation

What is facilitation? This is a life skill that is needed and mostly used in a meeting environment. Facilitation is the art and science of helping a group or team in their thinking, planning, and decision making.

Imagine the chaos and confusion there would be when you are holding a meeting without a moderator or facilitator. Very often we do not realise the knowledge and potential we have within a given grouping or team.

In many cases, the insights and knowledge needed to resolve problems and or identify innovative ways forward, are just within the team. The skill to unlock this potential knowledge and solution is most times found in facilitation.

A good facilitator will strike a balance between dominant personalities and those that are less dominant.

Facilitation mainly focuses on progress rather than arguments. It is very common during meetings to drift away from the point being discussed and so it is very important that the facilitator does not lose focus.

There are 3 main elements to effective facilitation:

  • Focus on Progress – the key to successful facilitation is to focus on progress.  To achieve this you need to set the right tone of the meeting and ensure that the participants are motivated from the start to end. You will also need to use your feedback life skills to ensure that information is flowing smoothly and at the end of it all a consensus has to be built.
  • Interpersonal Skills – to manage progress you need not only keep things on track but, you also need to use good interpersonal skills. These will include having a good command of; rapport building; effective communication verbal and non-verbal; listening actively and how you use your question technique.
  • Personal Characteristics – we all have different characteristics though I feel that the following are a must have to achieve better facilitation; ability to learn; sensitivity; openness to change; self-awareness; friendliness and off-course some sense of humour.

Team Meetings

The last and final life skill set is rather not a skill but something I feel should be acquired in your life “team meetings.” As a leader, you will need to have regular meetings with your team or group.

The key to an effective team meeting is to know why the meeting is being held. So before you call for a meeting ensure that your mind is clear and certain as to why you are calling for the meeting.

I will not go into details of what a meeting should be but they could be formal or informal.

As a leader only hold meetings when necessary. I have worked in companies where meetings are held unnecessarily. Meetings if not well planned for can be a share waste of company time as they take away the time for doing other duties.

The best way is to have planned meetings with set targets. Only “bosses” call for unnecessary meetings.  Another key factor is to call only people you think need to be present or will make a worthwhile contribution.

You see when you call for a meeting it is your reputation at stake. Make sure you build a reputation for handling meetings very well.

Leading team meetings effectively requires a wide range of skills. These skills could include the ability to focus on how the meeting is progressing and blending it with your own interpersonal life skills and characteristics.

To achieve this you need to build your knowledge base and step out of the box. In fact let’s just say remove the box altogether; think about what you are doing as a group and get a lot of practice.

Conclusion

I hope you have learned something from the three series I will end with a Chinese proverb ~ “Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand”. Until next time remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

Welcome to part 2 of “the 9 must have life skills.” In part 1 I talked about the first three life skills namely; the skill of influencing; the skill of delegation and the skill of persuasion. Click here to read “The 9 must have life skills part 1.”

As mentioned in part 1 this article will be more of help to those in a leadership role. “Leadership does not always wear the harness of compromise” ~ Woodrow Wilson.

In this article, we will look at the next 3 life skills. You may wonder why I call them life skills and not leadership skills, this is because we are all born leaders and we have these skills in us.

The skills are listed randomly even though they are related.

The Skill of Coaching

This is perhaps one of the most critical skills to have in relation to delegation. If you are in a leadership position you will or may have delegated some work to your subordinate(s) and the most critical area is to have confidence in your colleague.

The only way confidence can be created is by way of coaching. You will only have confidence in someone if you know that they were properly coached and more especially if the coaching was done by you.

By definition “coaching is a process which supports people in developing their skills and achieving their skills”. The subject of coaching is a wide one that needs a dedicated article. I promise to do more research on this topic.

There are several approaches to coaching and they all tend to be in agreement that it involves:

  • Activities to develop someone’s skills and abilities. This could be either on a one on one or group basis.
  • Developing targets that are both individual and group-oriented. This is very common in sports-related activities.
  • Focus on improving performance, this could be individual or team.

I believe the skill of coaching is equally important even in parenting. These days our children are very clever and they need to be coached in order to get the maximum benefit from their academic work.

The speed at which they learn is amazingly fast and as a parent, you just need to keep up with them. A good leader should be able to coach, that is imparting some of his skills to his colleagues.

A good leader is judged by how knowledgeable and skilled his team members are. If you are a leader you will be judged by the results your team is achieving.

Feedback

Feedback is inter-linked with the skill of coaching. I regard feedback as a form of communication. Feedback serves two main purposes:

  • Motivation – when a team is performing well, feedback can increase confidence and encourage the team to perform at the same high or even higher level.
  • Correction – this is also true when a team is not performing at the expected level, feedback can be used to assess how to change and improve performance for the better.

This skill (feedback) can be very critical in the following instances;

  • When providing coaching support. At this point, there is feedback from both the coach and the student. As coaching involves the setting of goals the student has to give feedback on the progress and what difficulties are being encountered. The coach also has to give feedback on the modification of the program if need be.
  • Reviewing how a delegated activity is progressing. When you delegate work there is a need for feedback from both ends to ascertain that the job is being done correctly and the person delegated has understood the instructions.
  • Conducting management reviews and appraisals. In a work environment as a leader you will be required to conduct employment appraisals for your juniors. Appraisals are a two way assessment. The person being assessed gives feedback to his appraiser and vice versa.
  • Handling conflict – this is discussed below.
  • Facilitating – this is also discussed in part 3.

For feedback to be appreciated it has to be positive. The following are a few tips for ensuring positive feedback:

  • Feedback has to be specific and to the point.
  • Feedback has to be fair and sincere. This will ensure maximum or intended results to be achieved with minimum difficulty.
  • Feedback should be descriptive and focused on action and not on an individual.
  • Feedback can also be futuristic. This is especially important for corrective feedback.

Remember that feedback is a very vital skill for both good leaders and managers.

The Skill of Conflict Handling

The final skill to be dealt with in this part is the skill of handling conflicts. I would be safe to assume that every one of us have had to resolve some feud of some sort. It doesn’t matter how it was resolved but it was done.

Conflict handling is vital to all human beings whether in leadership roles or not. Yet this is one skill that many of us do not want to have or use. A good leader should know how to resolve conflicts among his team members. This is vital because unresolved conflicts can be very detrimental to the team as a whole.

The first step in handling conflicts is to be aware of the possible reason behind the conflict. A mini investigation can be conducted to ascertain the cause. By definition, some conflicts are easier to handle than others. Some cases can be very difficult to handle that you may require a third party to help resolve them.

Firstly you need to understand as the person in charge that conflict is not necessarily a bad thing. There are bound to be conflicts where two or more people are gathered.

You will also appreciate that if conflicts are resolved properly they can add a lot of motivation to the group, by making the team understand each other even better.

There are however different approaches to handling conflicts. I know for sure that most of us do not want to handle conflicts or would rather find the easy way out. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut.

I believe that conflicts have to be faced or handled head-on. Whichever method is used please ensure that the parties involved are satisfied with the resolution. I know that it is impossible to please all but always look at the bigger picture and what is beneficial to the aggrieved parties.

Conclusion

I feel that the topic on coaching has not been done much justice. I will be writing a whole article on this very challenging topic so you can have an insight of what coaching is all about.

The skill of coaching is a must have for all. “I believe that the mind-set that allows you to spend your working life thinking and congratulating people rather than being unpleasant to them is the mainstay of good leadership” ~ Tim Waterstone. Bye for now and remember to always “standout tall and be counted.” Revised on 01/03/2021.

Although there are no set standards of life skills set to have, in order to be successful, as we all have different skills set to see us through the hassle and bustles of life, there are a set of life skills that I personally feel you should acquire in order that you are distinguished from the rest. This set of life skills, I think is the distinction between success and failure. The skills mentioned in this article will be more useful especially to those in a leadership role. “I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people” ~ Mohandas Gandhi.

The Skill of Influencing

The first among the life skills is influence. Maybe let’s start by defining the word its self influence. Here are some dictionary definitions;

  • The ability to change someone’s views, attitude or behaviours
  • The power of a person to have an effect on someone else resulting from ability, position or wealth.

If you are a leader this is one skill that you will need and use very often. You need to know how to communicate in a way that “gains support”. Why do you want to gain support? Influencing a group of people should be distinct from coercion and trickery. People do not want to be tricked or coerced. If you to be a good leader you will use your influencing skill to gain support from your team or group of people. Let the people follow you willingly and you will gain their unwavering trust even in times of difficulties.

Influence goes hand in hand with power. As we have noted in the definition above. Power can be thought of in a number of ways, each relevant to the way leaders can influence others;

  • Expert power – this comes due to the knowledge one has gained
  • Personal power – this comes by way of what other people think about you. The more highly respected the more likely you are able to influence them.
  • Position power – this is gained through your position in an organization

Influencing skills are a combination of various other skills when brought together, these can help you change someone’s views, attitude or behaviour

Delegation

A good leader will always delegate some of his duties. What is delegation? “This is giving responsibility to someone to carryout tasks that you normally do yourself. By delegating you give others the authority to do things, but you remain accountable and responsible for their outcome”. Delegation encourages; communicating what is expected and builds trust between leader and subordinates among others. To understand delegation you need to have honest answers to the following questions.

  • How do you give responsibility to someone else?
  • How do you ensure that they feel clear about what they are being asked to do?

Delegation is a powerful tool. Many leaders do not understand why they should delegate. Here is why I think delegation is a great tool.

  • Delegation releases your time to concentrate on other important matters
  • Builds the capability of others in your team. Remember that no one is indispensable. The organization has to continue growing with or without you.

“No person will make a great business who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit” ~ Andrew Carnegie. Remember always that a leader is team player. In our society today we lack young leaders simply because there is no delegation from the top to help groom the young ones. Theodore Roosevelt says “the best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it”.

Persuasion

The final skill for this part is persuasion. “The act or process of encouraging someone to do or believe someone”. Aristotle broke down persuasion and separated it into three kinds of appeals.

  • An appeal to “ethos”  – the credibility person making the persuasive argument. This maybe how convinced you are by that person.
  • An appeal to “logos” – the use of logic to support a claim. How do the facts being presented add up?
An appeal to “pathos” – the emotional or motivational appeal.

Being persuasive also means being able to sell a message. Those in the sales and marketing industry will agree with me that they use persuasion more often when trying to sell products/services especially to potential customers.

I love the saying by Professor Bob Sutton “argue if you are right, listen if you are wrong”. Many of the times we know when one has made a mistake. I think it is also very humbling to acknowledge as a leader that you made a mistake and allow your subordinates to make suggestions. Most of the answers we are looking for are just within our team or group.

Selling a message can mean; convincing your colleagues to a certain approach or methodology; like I mentioned above with the sales guys, persuading your would be customers to buy services or products and bringing your colleagues or members of your group to agree with your ideas.

We all have the skill of persuasion in us all it needs is to be awakened. Most successful leaders I have come across or read about are very persuasive. Remember persuasion can be used to influence people to do negative to society.

I do not advocate for negativity and I encourage you to use these skills positively and help change the world into a better place for all.

Conclusion

I am tempted to write more in this article, I will leave it at the 3 life skills for now and will continue in the next article. I do not wish to make my article very long.

As you read these articles reflect on the life skills that you have acquired this far and evaluate them if they are helping you to succeed in life.

There is no written down formula for success and there are no prescribed life’s skill set for success these are only suggestions. You are the formula and you shall succeed in whatever you do and always remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

You have something to give

“When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice” ~ Indian Proverb. “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” ~ Sir Winston Churchill. Each one of us is uniquely designed and made. We are all designed to be interdependent no single person in this world can say he is independent and does not need the other. In this article I want to remind and encourage you of how important and relevant you are to humanity. I want you to realize that you have something to contribute towards the well being of humanity. Whatever, your situation or background you have something that everyone does not have.

I have noted with great concern on some of the negative questions being asked on one of the major websites. And to make matters worse they are coming from kids as young as 15 years of age. Most of the questions are to do with giving up on life. Imagine a 15 year old kid is giving up on life even before he actually begins living. I always ask myself this question; imagine Albert Einstein; Henry Ford; Thomas A. Edison and the many other inventors and discoverers had given up on their lives, before their inventions or discoveries, what would the world be today?

Your gifts and talents may not amount or march the great discoverers and inventors of the past, but it plays a very significant role in the advancement of humanity. You have a very significant and important role to play on earth. Myles Monroe says the richest place on earth is the grave yard. This is where you find inventions that were never invented; dreams that where not realized; songs that were not sung; buildings that were not built and many other things that the world has been deprived of. I pray and hope that you will not be a grave yard statistic but will leave a legacy to be remembered.

Ask not what the world will do for you but, what you will do for the world. Stop thinking from within the box and in fact let’s remove the box all together. The human race is like a body. The body cannot function properly with a missing part, it may function but with a lot of difficulties, Do not be those missing parts. Do not rob the world of your talents and gifts. Do not deprive us of your contribution to humanity. We need it greatly. You are not living by accident but for a reason and purpose.

If you were almost giving up on your life sit down and thank your God that you are still alive. Many are struggling to hang on to life yet you have it for free. There are so many things to thank your creator about and let alone obey his words by contributing to the wellbeing of humanity. I personally have learnt that there is no little contribution. It all adds up to something. It is high time you started using your mind constructively.

You see everything is conceived in the mind. Our minds are the workshops for all that we see. Our minds are the power engines of our lives. The real secret of power is consciousness of power. The more conscious we become of our unity with this mind, the less conscious we shall become of conditions and limitations, and as we become emancipated or freed from conditions we come into a realization of the unconditional. We have become free! We have removed the box. We have evolved.

The ability to eliminate imperfect conditions depends upon mental action, and mental action depends upon consciousness of power; therefore, the more conscious we become of our unity with the source of all power, the greater will be our power to control and master every condition.

Conclusion

Every human being including yourself is as important as the next one and the one before. I want to encourage you not to look down upon yourself. You were created to contribute to humanity and your contribution is valuable. This all starts with you realizing and appreciating how important you are to the whole world. DO NOT rob us of your gifts and talents. Just like you have benefited from the inventors of computers we also want to benefit from you. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

Do you have what it takes?

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

Many people are poor because they have accepted poverty. They have failed because they have accepted failure and it is labeled all around them? Failure or poverty is a state of mind. If I asked you whether you want to succeed most likely the answer would be yes yet, you are doing nothing to change your current situation. It is this kind of negative mentality that leaves most people stagnant and wallowing in poverty and failure.

I like to define success not by the things or possessions you have but, by the many obstacles you have overcome. The more huddles or obstacles you overcome the more stronger and successful you are. Most successful people are stronger than the average or the below average people. By strong I do not necessarily mean physical strength only but also and more importantly mental strength. I have not come across a successful person with a weak mental strength. Most of them do a lot of reading and keep on accumulating knowledge. They say Knowledge is power (strength) strive to acquire it.

I personally have come to appreciate the knowledge and understanding am getting through reading. I have become conscious about many things and able to make good judgments and better decisions. My target this year is to read at least 24 books that is 2 books per month. This is besides my usual reading of business magazines and newsletters and other literature of my interest. Through my experience in life and the analysis of some books written by successful people I have devised a short list of characteristics to help assess if you have what it takes to be successful.

Love what you do

This is perhaps the most important element among other things. If you love and enjoy what you do it makes things even much easier. Most of the time I do not perform to the very best of my abilities when something is imposed on me. If you are working and your primary objective is to just earn a salary, chances are that you do not enjoy your work and are just in it for the money. You are miserable. I am very aware that we all need money to survive but money should not be the ultimate motivator. Mind you having a lot of money does not necessarily mean you are successful.

When you love to do what you do, you do it with a passion. When you do something with a passion it shows even in the end product. Take for example 2 artists one paints just to earn a living and the other paints with passion. When the two painters paintings are up for sale the quality will be very distinct. The artist who paints with a passion will be more likely to sell their products at a more high value than the other artist. This is because he will pay more attention to detail and quality.

Believe in your self

This is a key factor in motivating yourself. How can you honestly succeed if you cannot even believe in yourself to succeed? I would strongly encourage you to first meditate and condition your mind to believe that you can succeed at achieving your set goals. The more you believe in yourself the more self confidence you develop. And the more confidence you have ,the more results you can achieve.

When you have belief and confidence on your side, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. Remember the journey to success is not an easy one. There is no short cut. It starts with your mind set.

Master your plan

You cannot succeed without a plan. This is cardinal. You must formulate a plan and a purpose to achieve. This must be written down. There is power in putting things down. Be the master of your plan. Seek divine guidance over your plan. This may require you to meditate and make adjustments as you go along, but ensure that your plan is at the back of your mind. What is your plan?

Do not wait to have a clear plan

Start immediately you have a verge plan. Do not wait until you have a clear one. The more you walk through your plan the more clearer and visible the end product becomes. If you wait for a clear cut plan you will probably wait forever. The plan will become even more visible and tangible as you remain focused. Along the way you will have to make adjustments and amend the course of your plan. Do not make changes that completely change your intended purpose unless you are sure of it.

Your mind is your limit

What you think is your limit to achieving your goals. Read my article on “The Power of Thought” for more insight on what your thinking can do. Do not limit your mind but control what you think. Your mind is one of your greatest assets. If you do not like books or rather reading which is unlikely if you have come this far. Then success will elude you. Start acquiring knowledge and understanding read and read and read and read. Knowledge is one of the few assets no one can ever take away from you. Acquire vital knowledge and understanding, it is key to your success

Ability to handle people

If your intended goal includes handling other people. You must learn and develop the ability to handle them properly. Human beings can be very difficult to deal with. My intended purpose is not so human intensity but rather help them “Standout tall and be counted“.

[adrotate banner=”6″]

Act successful

Dorothea Brande says “Act as if it were impossible to fail” very true. Accepting failure is an act, accepting success is also an act. Why not act successful, after all it makes you feel good and look bright. I have said to my self that even when I fail at the first attempt I will act successful. I always say that those who failed are those who have tried and those who have succeeded have failed before. I will always try to succeed in what ever I am doing. It is better to die trying than die without trying.

Conclusion

This has been a long article I hope that you found it useful. You can book mark it and come back or read it offline. This is not the exhaustive list it is my own analysis. You should always have a positive mind and attitude in your quest for success. Remember “standout tall and be counted“.
