This is the second article of a two part series on 8 ways to help maximise your potential. A quick reminder of the definition of the world potential according to the oxford dictionary “potential is having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future“.  Personal development and growth is a vehicle that you can use to help maximise your potential. We are all built with potential, that is waiting to be unleashed and maximised. “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential.. .these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence” – Eddie Robinson. Lets get straight into it and see what the remaining 4 ways are:-

Know yourself

You will be amazed to learn that many of us do not know ourselves very well. It may sound absurd that am talking about knowing yourself but it is very important that you know yourself and have total control of your being. I believe that self knowledge is the starting point of maximising your potential. It gives us an insight into understanding our capabilities. Knowing your self will help you understand where your natural strengths lie and how well you can combine them to take advantage of the prevailing opportunities.

Donald O. Clifton and Paula Nelson in “play to your strengths” outline five different ways in which we can discover our strengths as outlined below:-

  • Listen for yearnings – normally our yearnings are often triggered when we hear or see someone doing something we would like to do or feel we can do it better. You will agree with me that there is something you are yearning to do but do not realise it because you have not paid attention to your self.
  • Watch out for satisfactions – what really satisfies you? When you get a glow of satisfaction from doing something (work related off course) even though we may not understand why, this is most likely one of your strengths.
  • Watch out for rapid learning – a strength is usually characterised by rapid learning. Am very sure that you do have things that you learn more easily than others. This will usually continue for a longtime if not a life time.
  • Be aware of moments of excellence – position your mind to be alert to your moments of excellence. I believe that each and everyone of us has had a moment of excellence in their lives.
  • Watch for total performance of excellence.

Over the years I have learned to be a student of my self. Learning is a continuous process and so from time to time I do a personal re-evaluation. This process has so far proved to be very important and of great use to my personal development and growth.

Make the change for new things

Don’t get stuck in the survival or maintenance modes of personal development and growth. You need to make the change for new things in order to maximise your potential.  We live in an ever changing world and the only way to keep moving forward is to embrace change. Most of us have a reputation of resisting change. I know that change comes with at a price but it must be embraced as it usually comes with different opportunities. “Your current conditions do not reflect your ultimate potential” – Anthony Robbins.

Life demands that we move with time and everyday is a new day. It is also important to be always reading and improving your skill set. Knowledge is key to success and you should always be willing to learn on a daily basis. There instances when you cannot change some situations due to various factors but you can change your mind set and behaviour. The only factor that you have control over is yourself. Many of us fail because we do not want to change our habits and behaviours to accommodate the ever changing environment.

Set your goals and stick with them

Perhaps the starting point to maximise your potential is goal setting. The importance of goal setting cannot be over emphasised. This is one of the cardinal principles in personal development and growth. When your have set your goals it is important that you stick with them and do not be distracted from achieving them. Persistence and perseverance will be key in achieving your goals. Stay focused and motivated as you pursue your goals.

You should set goals that are realistic and achievable. However, you should not limit yourself to setting goals that will not challenge your ability. You are capable of achieving more than you can image. God made you to be a solution to the world and the way I see it now the world needs more solutions than ever. For more details on goal setting please read click here.

Take action

Continuous effort! not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking your potential” – Winston Churchill. Maximising your potential requires that you take action. A journey of a thousand miles requires that you make the first step in the right direction. Regardless of what your plans are for your life just get started. Its only when you take action that you begin to realise your potential. Without taking action you will never realise your full potential and a later on maximise it. Taking action is the fuel to living your dream. Once you get started on your journey there will be obstacles that you will encounter. These obstacles should not stop you from re-focusing.

You should make a commitment to achieving your intended life’s purpose. Your success will only be achieved by taking action. Do not let procrastination still your success. Do not let failure stop you from achieving your goals. Instead make a commitment to pursuing your goals and live to enjoy the fruits of your labour. I know for a fact that everything worth while does not come on a silver platter. There is much joy in living your dream without short cuts. I always try to do things right and straight it makes my life much easier and leaves me with a piece of mind. So far so good.

I have made a commitment to ensure that this blog becomes one of the preferred sites in the areas I have fashioned it to be. This commitment is for life. I will continue to write and post articles on this site for as long as I possibly can. I know for a fact that it is helping someone out there and that is the biggest motivation for me. This site is one of my contributions to help change the world for the better.

Consult not your fears, but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you have tried and failed in, but for what is still possible for you to do” – Pope John XXIII. There are many ways that you can use to help maximise your potential, the 8 ways mentioned in both articles are just some of them. I recommend that you develop the habit of reading and have an open mind to learning. Remember that personal development and growth is not a competition but a personal journey to be walked by you alone. Bye for now and  as usual “standout tall and be counted”.

Motivational Quotes

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference” – Serenity Prayer

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called present” – Unkonwn

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around” ~ Leo Buscaglia. We are all blessed and posses skills and abilities that nobody else possesses quite like we do. God made each and every one of us unique and have a role to play in the world. Just like the body has different parts that make it whole the world has different components that make it complete. Those components represent you and I.

We are all gifted with unique talents and gifts, whether this is talent to show on the world stage, or on a small stage as someone who makes a difference, does not necessarily matter. What is important is for one to play their part and not deprive the world of their talents.

All these talents and abilities if not expressed are just potential. Since we are all blessed with these unique talents the question is how do we make the most of our personal potential? Let’s start by defining or rather establishing the meaning of the word “potential”. According to the oxford dictionary “potential is having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future“. if you have something then you have something to show. There is no point in showing something that you do not have it is not possible. You may not currently know what your talents are until you fully understand and explore your personality. If you have to fulfill your dreams it is imperative that you learn how to maximise your potential. The following methods might just be the answer if you have been on the quest to fulfilling your potential.

Happiness and Goals

[adrotate banner=”2″]

“Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life. In Its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence; The bliss of growth; The glory of action; The splendor of beauty; For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a Vision: But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day!” ~ From the Sanskrit. One of the greatest hindrances for failing to maximise our potential is living an unhappy life. You see, happiness is a choice. You choose either to be happy or otherwise. I have learned that happiness is an antidote for success.

From the time of great philosophers such as Aristotle happiness has been linked to the achievement of goals. That is the more reason why we find so much happiness and pleasure in the work that makes us achieve our goals. Happiness and goal setting cannot be substituted for anything if you have to maximise your potential. Living a happy life will surely motivate you into maximizing your personal potential. Click here to read more on happiness. There is no success without happiness. I think that what drives most of us to succeed is happiness. Happiness therefore is a very important driver to maximizing one’s potential.

Do it your self
“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to my fellow-creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again” ~ William Penn. Self development is a do it yourself skill and do it yourself activity. However, you look at it, if you have to maximize your potential; you have to learn how to do it yourself. I have noticed that most of us would rather not do even the easiest of tasks for fear of failure. Yet, we would rather be credited with someone else’s success. From my working experience most of us do not want to take responsibility for our actions especially if they are negative ones.

I believe that to maximize your potential you need to learn and know how get the basics done. I do not know about you but I enjoy doing most of the things on my own. It actually gives me great satisfaction and pleasure when I have accomplished something on my own. I am basically a do it yourself person. This does not mean that I do everything, no no no. I am very much aware of my skills set and know my limitations. If you are in a leading position you must learn how to delegate and supervise your subordinates. One of the greatest skill you need to posses as a leader is the skill of delegation and supervision. As a leader you must learn to give direction and motivation to your followers.

Create your destiny
“That a man can change himself, improve himself, re-create himself, control his environment, and master his own destiny is the conclusion of every mind who is wide-awake to the power of right thought in constructive action” ~ Larsen. “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not something to be waited for, but rather something to be achieved” ~ William Jennings Bryan. Maximising your potential entails creating your own destiny. We live our destiny by the little things that we do every day. Always remember that your destiny is not a destination but rather the journey that you live.

Philosophers and great thinkers have in the last centuries pondered and puzzled over the extent to which our lives are in our own hands and the extent to which they are pre-ordained. There are many thoughts and arguments but the main thought that comes out very clearly and distinct is that we can all set ourselves on the path we want by making up our minds to it. This has been proven that even in the most limiting societies we still have a free will to try. For if you are trying to achieve something then that is your first step to creating your destiny. If you are like me and are learning to maximise your potential then you are living your destiny.

Improve yourself
“Rely on your own strength of body and soul. Take for your star self-reliance, faith, honesty and industry. Don’t take too much advice — keep at the helm and steer your own ship, and remember that the great art of commanding is to take a fair share of the work. Fire above the mark you intend to hit. Energy, invincible determination with the right motive, are the levers that move the world” ~ Noah Porter. Even though nature compels us to improve, there are two opposing forces at play; to stay where we are and consolidated what you have gained or to explore what is still possible to achieve and know how far we can go.

[adrotate group=”1″]
The majority of us would rather not venture with the second force. We would rather take the safe and secure one, yet continue wondering what we might have missed out. This to me is the situation to most of us. We sit on our potential and die with it. Those who take the second risky path go on adventures seeking to maximise what they posses. This though comes at a cost and it is worth paying for. Have you ever noticed that the good things in life are not free? If you are not exploring your talents then I can assure you that you have taken the comfort zone. Get out there and explore your talents. You might just be the answer the world has been waiting for. I know the most common excuse that most of us have; I have no money or resources. If you think your idea that is good enough go for it and start living your dream.

I will end here for now. Lookout for part two in which I concluded with the remaining four ways to maximise your potential. Remember to always standout tall and be counted“.

5 principles to help you set your goals

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals” ~ Henry Ford. As the year comes to an end and as you prepare for the New coming Year, I thought I could just remind you and probably give you a few tips on how to set out your future goals. Goal setting is one activity that distinguishes successful people from the average ones. It is hence important in life to set your own achievable targets that are measurable. Before you set your goals, have your life’s intended purpose written down. The goals you set are aimed at helping you achieve your intended life’s purpose. For more on goal setting please read this article Goal setting Tips.

What are your strengths?
“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender that is strength” ~ Mahatma Gandhi. It is very important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are as a human being. Before you step out to set your goals know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Know what flows from you naturally. I have noticed that the best goals are those set around our strengths.

This makes life very easy and the journey to success enjoyable. You cannot set a goal as being a better mathematics teacher when your God given call is being an athlete. You will surely fail terribly. This goes to parents who are in the bad habit of deciding their children’s careers. Just because you are the one paying school fees, you have no right to force your children to study what they do not want. Or put straight, forcing them to become what you failed to be. I have two boys and all that I do is help them build on what they want to be.

My first son tells me he wants to be a medical doctor because he feels pity when he sees sick people. He wants to help them get better. The only thing I do is to help him work hard and tell him that he needs to work extra hard in sciences, be accepted in medical school. So far so good and I pray to God that he continues on this path.

Write down your goals
There is power in writing down something. One sure way of reminding yourself about your goals is to put them in black and white. Please make sure that you are the one deciding your own goals and they are not borrowed. It is much better and easier to set your own targets than copying some else’s.

The targets you set must be your own blue print that can be adjusted as you go along. Writing also acts a measure and monitor, as this helps you to review them from time and again. I find goal writing fun and interesting. A lot of things pop up that I could have easily forgotten about if I had not put them in writing. Your targets are your blue print; the final product is your white print. All successful people have their life’s intended purposes written down and broken down into smaller manageable and achievable targets.

Dream Big
“If one advances confidently in the direction of their goals and endeavours to live the life that they have imagined, they will meet with success unexpected in un common hours” ~ Henry David Thoreau. Our lives are made of what we dream about. It all starts with your mind. If you dream, small you are more likely to achieve less in life. The bigger your dreams are the bigger your requirement to dedication and the bigger your expectations are. Zig Zigglar rightly says “if you can dream it, then you can achieve it”.

Am sure that you have dreams of what you want to be. I believe that every one of us dreams of what they want to be. There is nothing wrong in dreaming big. You are only increasing your chances of success.

Imagine yourself succeeding
I would say dreaming and imagination go hand in hand. When you are dreaming you are visualising yourself living your dream. Use your imagination to keep your dreams alive. If you want to achieve your goals you need to continue imagining yourself as a success. Such positive thoughts send out strong energies that attract complimentary thoughts from people that can help us achieve what we want.

Constructive imagination means mental labour, by some considered to be the hardest kind of labour, but, if so, it yields the greatest returns, for all the great things in life have come to men and women who had the capacity to think, to imagine, and to make their dreams come true. “The cultivation of the imagination leads to the development of the ideal out of which your future will emerge” ~ The Master Key.

Pursue you goals with passion
The driving force behind your goal achievement is your desire. You must develop a burning desire that transcends everything else to achieve your purpose. That is why I said in the first place that you set your goals based on your strengths. Whatever life’s purpose you have in life always make sure that you enjoy what you do. Life’s too short to be lived miserably.

Inject some passion in thing that you do. If you are an artist’s draw like that is your last drawing. Imagine that you are going away and you want people to remember you for something you will surely give them the very best of your being. If you are in the service industry being good and just smiling at your customers makes them come back frequently. Live life with passion.

I will end with one of my favourite quotes by Thomas Jefferson ~ “nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude”. Lastly as always “standout tall and be counted”.

“For changes to be of any true value, they’ve got to be lasting and consistent.” ~Tony Robins.  “Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives” ~ Tony Robins. No man is an island. Personal success and development cannot be achieved in isolation. God has abundantly blessed us with people in our lives that we can rightly use to achieve our life’s purpose and goals.

Each and every person you have come across in your life has a part to play and it is entirely up to you to recognise that and help them to help you move closer to your life’s purpose. In this article I discuss three important ways to empower our associates. Firstly let me make mention that there are 3 groups of people in our lives; firstly those close relations, these will include your family, your friends, your spouse and children; secondly your work relationships, these will include your colleagues, work mates including your boss. Thirdly all the other people you come across on a day to day basis.

You need to know how to interact these people in order for you to help you achieve your desired life’s purpose and goals. The key areas I have identified are listed below.

There is no single person I have come across in my entire life that does not like or rather feel good when they are appreciated. This is perhaps the most important aspect of getting people to like you and do what you would like them to do. You must learn and be in the habit of thanking people even for the smallest of things they have done for you. A simple smile and a “thank you” goes a long way in lifting the other persons morale.

At least say thank you for the effort even when what you have been given is not exactly what you asked for. Let the other person feel appreciated when serving you. Appreciation lifts the self-esteem of human beings. The feeling of appreciation is an intense one and can make or break someone’s self-esteem. Imagine yourself working for a boss who does not seem to appreciate whatever effort you put in your work.

Imagine the feeling of not being appreciated after you have spent so many hours on an assignment. But then contrast this with the feeling of being appreciated even for your very small efforts. You will even put in more extra time because you feel that your work and presence are being appreciated.

Remember, everyone is primarily emotional.  Everything that people do, or refrain from doing, is triggered by their deeper emotions.  Your job is to connect with their higher and more positive emotions so they feel so good about you they want to help you and please you in some way. If you are in a supervisory position it will really help you to spend more time with your subordinates inviting their feedback and comments on their work. This I believe is one of the best methods to get their work approved as they will understand what is expected of them.

Nothing beats the feeling of satisfaction when your work is approved by your manager. You feel like the work is personally yours. Believe me having a highly, motivated worker can yield results beyond your imagination. If your personal goal is very dependent on other people’s input you need to devise methods that are consistent and gain respect from other people. You need to be nice, friendly and courteous. I encourage you to read more on people management. In life, you always have a choice.  You can either do everything yourself or you can get others to help you do some of the work.

The third and final aspect of empowering others is attention. Just like every one of us love attention in one way or the other. Learn to listen with a keen interest. Pay attention to the details that keep people motivated and work to improve them. If you have a difference with say a work colleague. Do not argue with them but reason with them. Listen to their explanation and make sure you understand the reasoning behind.

I have experienced this especially with women. Even when they know that you cannot help them but just the fact that you will listen to them makes a difference. The fact that you will give them the attention they need, will greatly improve their self-esteem. If you are married that is lesson number one for you.

Your ability to delegate effectively, which requires that you inspire and empower others to help you willingly, will determine how fast you move ahead.  It will determine how much you earn in your job. It will determine the quality and quantity of your productivity.  It will determine your ultimate financial success in life.  And the key to all of this is your ability to empower others. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

4 Tips to help stay positive

“To succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you something to inspire you” ~ Tony Dorsett. One of the keys to being able to maintain the motivation levels for any project is found in the ability to stay positive no matter what the circumstances are.  Having a positive mindset is not only an asset to any endeavor but also to the individual as people generally like being around positive minded persons.

There are several ways to learn how to stay within a positive mindset always. Below are just some simple recommendations anyone can follow to have positive thoughts:

• The first recommendation would be to start with the focus of the mind at any given time. You are what you think. Your thoughts will normally determine and dictate your mood. Training your mind to only recognize the positive elements in any situation or circumstance is one good habit to follow.

This is because the perception formed in the mind generally dictates the rest of the individual’s response. Therefore if the mind is able to process information in a positive manner then there is a better chance of facing any potential problems successfully.

• Being in the company of other positive minded people also helps to ensure the cultivation of the individual’s own positive mindset. Keeping negative people from being a permanent fixture within one’s everyday activities would be a step in the right direction. Be mindful of the company that you keep. They say birds of the feather flock together.

If you spend most of your time in the company of positive minded people you are more likely to be positive minded as well. This I have noticed with my friends. Some of them are very negative that when I spend just one hour with them my mood changes and that disturbs my positive thought pattern.

• Another interesting way of staying positive is to surround yourself with positive posters, quotes, audio and visual media exposure and maybe even trying to commit to memory some helpful and positive abstracts or statements.

I have a few books on inspirational quotes that I read on a regular basis. I also read the book of psalms in the bible. Listening to motivational speakers is another way to staying and maintain a positive mind. “When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge”. ~ Albert Einstein

• Proven scientific research has shown that regular exercise can also help regulate the chemical balance in the human body and thus create the positive energy that is needed to keep a positive mindset.  Exercising cannot be over emphasized. Not only does it help us in keeping our minds in a positive state, it also helps to keep our bodies physically healthy.

Thus following a regular exercise routine would be a definite advantage. Meditating and yoga may also help to achieve the same positive mindset as it is predominantly geared towards this end.

Ultimately, a positive mind is a recipe for success. Keeping positive thoughts yields positive results. There are many other ways to help keep your mind positive and staying motivated but I feel the ones outlined above have really helped and think they would be of use to you. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted“.

To succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you”. ~ Tony Dorset. Many of us have read a great deal on the subject of success and what it takes to be successful in whatever you intend to be. You will agree with me that there are thousands and thousands of books on success and it’s requirements, after all we all want to be successful in our endevours. I want to humbly contribute by giving a practical experience on the subject. Success does not come without motivation and inspiration. I have never come across a successful person who has no inspiration and motivation.

We are all motivated and inspired by something or someone. The difference is that those who succeed keep the fire burning were as most of you quench the fire even before you get started. Below I have outlined three things that will help improve and keep you motivated. Surely the road to success is definitely not an easy one.

• Self motivation
To become self motivated means to get out of the beaten path, out of the rut, because extraordinary results require extraordinary means. I describe self motivation as the fuel to keeping your dream alive. The more motivated you are the more you keep working and getting closer towards realizing your dream.

To keep yourself motivation high, write down your intended purpose and keep it somewhere you can easily access and read it often. In Napoleon Hills’ book “Think and Grow Rich” he advises that you read it on a daily basis. Just like in a car fuel runs out every now and again and the car needs refueling. Self motivation must be kept alive. Remember it is the fuel to keeping your dream alive.

I have written my intended purpose in life and I keep referring to it on a regular basis. At least 3 or 4 times a week. This way I keep reminding myself of what I should be doing on a daily basis in order that I achieve my purpose.

• What is your goal
Surely success cannot be attained without a goal. I would like to believe that all people who have succeeded have had goals imbibed somewhere. I prefer writing down in black and white cause I believe there is power in writing.

At first your goal may not be as clear as you want it to be, but still write it down anyway. You will notice that along the way you begin to make adjustments to it as you become clearer. Your written down intended purpose is your target and goal. You only make adjustments to the way you are going to achieve it. If your goal for example is to raise $10m in 10 years you must state how you intend to raise this amount of money and start working towards achieving your goal.

The best way to achieving your intended purpose is to be engaged in an activity you enjoy most. This will give you added pleasure and you will be able to produce your very best as you go about your activities. Remember it is easier to do something you enjoy best than what you do not enjoy.

• Be dedicated
My last advice is dedication. How then can you succeed without being dedicated? Goals are achieved through dedication. The time you spend to prepare for an exam will ultimately show when the results are released. Success does not come on a silver plate. There are a lot of sacrifices that are made for you to succeed.

I will go back to the example of raising $10m in 10 years. If that is your goal you will need to adjust your spending and cut out on all an unnecessary expenditure. You will also need to be dedicated on an activity or activities that will help you raise your money and be faithful to saving on a regular basis. Dedication is no easy task.

Improving your motivation and better still keeping motivated is an important part of success. You cannot be successful without being motivated and inspired. The 3 things outlined above are some of the ways I use to help improve my motivation. I believe that there are many ways that can be used to help improve your motivation and do hope that you enjoyed reading my article and find it helpful. Like I always say “standout tall and be counted” you deserve it.
