The Joy of Serving People

Motivational Quotes

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” – Anatole France.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Serenity Prayer

Cease to ask what the morrow will bring forth, and set down as gain each day that Fortune grants.” – Horace.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called present.” – Unkonwn

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution will ever experience life’s deepest joy; true fulfillment” – Anthony Robbins. We live to serve people. Humanity was created for service. What ever kind of job you do is related to serving people. It may be directly or indirectly interacting with people, but I believe that what ever we do in life is ultimately serving people. If what you do, does not benefit people, it simply means you are robbing the world. Everyday of our lives there is a time when we have to serve someone. No matter what you are or do there comes a time when you have to serve someone. Service that is beneficial to the person being served. People do not realise that there is joy and a lot of satisfaction in being of service.

People remember us by the way we treat them; the way we talk to them. The small things we do and say really matter and count. If you are a parent or a guardian you will agree with me that you take pride and joy when you are being of service to your children or spouse. I always try as much as possible to be of help and make myself available when ever time allows. With the busy schedule I have on my plate I have over the past created some days during the week where I give my family undivided attention. My two children know that they can ask me to play with them and they do not expect any objections. Sometimes my youngest son David will remind me and and say that today is our time with you.

I have noticed that ever since I deliberately created more time for them there is a sense of togetherness. I am beginning to grow more patient with them on so many things. This has helped improve my understanding and enhanced my relationship with my family. I guess this is very important especially that my eldest son Lutangu is getting into his teens. In other words am discovering the other side of me; the patient side of me; the gentle side of me. Because generally I am not a very patient person. Now they look forward to those days. When we are playing games am the one who is usually serving them; am the one who does the dirty work and they get to enjoy seeing me all dirty.

I also serve at church in the traffic department. We are the first people you meet and the last people you see when you come to church on Sundays. It is a tough job especially, on hot and rainy days but the joy and satisfaction you get when serving God’s people is just immeasurable. People will always appreciate the service you render to them no matter what. Even if they don’t thank you immediately they will at some point thank you. All you have to do is to just continue doing what is right. It is such a joy when you find people thanking you for your service. That is why it is always important to say thank you when you are being served, it simply encourages the one providing the service to even do more.

There is Growth from Service

Apart from just the joy you get from serving, there is also personal growth. We are all called to serve. The world needs more people to serve. If you are not deliberately serving people, I encourage you to take time to find something that you can do to serve others. It could be at your work place. Be the one that helps out a colleague; be the one who is more dependable in a certain area. Not just helping your boss but also help your peers. The more you practice to help the more you grow and the more you get satisfaction and derive happiness. The bible says “it is more blessed to give than to receive“. The rewards of serving are immense.

I developed this website not only to share my personal experience but to be of service to people. The articles I write are mainly personal experiences through which I hope that someone is being encouraged and challenged. Over the years I have also enjoyed personal growth because of my own articles. I do a lot of reading and research. As a result I am learning everyday of my life. I can only thank God for the ideas and opportunity he has given me to develop this website. I  believe that am still very much a work in progress. There are many many areas of my life that need to be worked on and slowly but surely they are being turned around.

Love is the joy of the good, the wonder of the wise, the amazement of the Gods” – Plato. Through service of people lives can be changed and transformed. As we serve and grow we should, endeavour to reach out to the world at large. I believe that serving people is also one way to unlocking our full potential. One can realise their potential by being of service to people. Again I would like to encourage you to find something that you can do that can be of service to the community around you. Start small and slowly reach out to a larger audience.  Take joy in serving people. Remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

Do more things that make you happy

This is my first article for this year and I thought that I should write an article that will help you stay happy for the rest of the year. “A man is successful if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do” ~ Bob Dylan. Perhaps this is the best description of success for me. The key factor is enjoying doing what you want to do. Sometimes the obvious escapes us.

Notice that whenever you are enjoying what you are doing, you do a better and outstanding job, you have more fun, and feel a certain sense of ease delight and mastery. We become better at something because of the time we spend doing it. In other words the saying practice makes perfect is true. I read somewhere that if we spend two hours a day doing something that we choose to do that makes us happy, within five years we can become an expert. That is why it is very important to have a job that you enjoy. There is no joy in doing a job that does not make you happy.

The challenge
I want to challenge you to find a little something that makes you happy every day. If you are currently working and you feel you do not enjoy your work, well before you think about quitting look at how you can improve your current situation and learn from it. Life is too short to live worrying every day. Besides most of us spend a lot of our time at our work places, why not make them a happy place. I have been in employment before that I dreaded going for work every day and I know what am talking about. The best solution is to make the best out of it. Remember it is essential that you learn to enjoy life there is much more to enjoyment that being sad. I know for sure that happiness makes you look younger.

You and only you alone are in charge of discovering then deciding what you want to do more of that which makes you happy. There are certain things that have to be done. To achieve happiness, make a commitment to making the best out of every situation. Work with pride do your job as if there is no tomorrow. Challenge yourself to always go an extra mile if you are in employment. This will certainly make you stand out from your fellow workers and earn you accolades. If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased and that is you.

Happiness is infectious
Marcus Aurelius concluded that “very little is needed to make a happy life”. Indeed happiness is a state of mind. A happy person always has a positive mental attitude. Make is a point in life to decide to be happy. I know that you come across trials and tribulations but the more you practice to do the things that make you happy the more relaxed and the more inner peace you will have. Happiness has a tendency of spilling over to the others around you.

I have a friend who is always happy. There are very few times I have seen him sad and he is such a huge source of greatness for me. Every time we meet up you feel like you just want to be with this guy more and more. I asked him what his secret to happiness was and he simply said I make a decision every morning to be happy and try to do more of the things that make me happy. This to me is one of the best formulas to happiness. Turn your sad moments to learning moments and reflect on them. Many of the times we are sad because we have allowed others to do so. There are times in all of our lives when we have to focus on sad and painful situations. But in the big picture, when life is running more smoothly, we have to remember to get back in the habit of making choices that will provide opportunities for us to do more and more things that make us happy.

Happiness in service
I believe that some of the happiest people are those in the service industry. If you are in this industry and are not happy please quit. I know that some of the people join the service industry for the sake of a pay cheque. These are the ones that should leave the industry and allow people with a natural inclination for serving humanity to do it with dignity and honor. I have experienced some of the worst treatment by medical personal yet this is a noble profession with a calling to serving lives.

In reality it feels very nice and pleasant and you feel useful after giving a helping hand. I have noticed that, even in my little kids they enjoy giving a hand in whatever I am doing. When they take this opportunity they are very joyful and happy. I want to believe that we all have a part to play in making the world a better pace and it all starts with you and me being a happy people. Service is honourable. When we continue to do more things that make us happy, we will become happier. This gift of well-being is the great reward of living the good life. Each one of us has a choice about how to love the world in our own unique way. “I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves…The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth” ~ Albert Einstein.

Laughter is the best medicine” ~ Unknown. Every day of your life make a decision to be happy. Wake up and declare happiness to be a part of your day. Yes you shall encounter sad moments but treat them as stepping stones. Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a happy world where everyone is playing there part and are happily doing it? I believe it can be done if we all played our part honestly and happily. Stay happy and remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

Be gracious and stay happy

Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation” ~ Brian Tracy. When something bad happens, instead of embracing it and taking it personal you need to learn to change how you think of it. For instance, if you work in the service industry and you have a rude customer, instead of letting it ruin your day and your mood, try and show some compassion, you see different people have different problems, perhaps something bad has happened to that individual, try and do something nice for them. A smile can be contagious. Instead of taking everyone’s bad mood personal make the choice to be in a good mood, smile and circulate the cheer! Thank the customer and wish them a pleasant day.

With larger life issues that can bring us down, like an ill family member, a divorce, a disagreement with a loved one, cast your worries away. Do what you can to help or correct the situation and then leave it in God’s hands. Many of the times we want to carry the burden in our heart. Remember you’re only a human, you can’t fix everything and shouldn’t have to carry all of life’s burden’s on your heart day in and day out. Do your best to apologise to those you wronged, forgive those who wronged you, ask for help when you require it, and offer help when you are able to.
It’s about letting go of all of those things sitting in your heart that are keeping you from having a positive outlook. It’s your choice; do not overload your heart with hate and spite. If you are able to keep the negative in your heart, let it go to make room for the positive.

Some people will never tell you they had a bad day perhaps they will describe the events that occurred. As a matter of fact some believe there’s no such thing as a bad day. I know that this is a hard concept to grasp especially for me, “bad days” have been a steady occurrence. To some every day is a gift. Some are thankful for the challenges as they are a source of learning. Be thankful for your job even when it is not pleasant. I have worked in an unpleasant environment. Until I learned to appreciate the job did I start getting some job satisfaction. I did not stay long though my plan was to move on.

Try and start to adopt the philosophy of appreciating what you have and see if it can work for you as well. Make a choice to be positive and learn to be thankful for all you have. Remember there are millions of people in a worse situation than you are. When you are having a “bad day” try and discover something good in it, there are more good things than bad things in a day. When you discover something good you will realize that a few bad things don’t ruin a whole day unless you let them! It’s an option! Every day we’re alive is a gift there is so much to be grateful for so why do we center on the things that make us unhappy? “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift that is why it called present” ~ unknown. Surely a present is mean for all to enjoy.

Readapt your thinking .bad days are selections we make! In the end having a positive outlook is entirely up to you! Its a choice you make day-to-day. You can never control what other people say or do to you but you are able to control your response. By selecting the positive route, as briefly outlined, you’ll be happier and healthier than ever before. You’ll have a peace within you that will leave people looking at you in awe. I think it is a choice that’s worth making. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted” and be gracious and enjoy your life.

Count your blessings

“Count your blessings”~ Og Madino. This is perhaps one of the most common quote I have come across without really digesting the meaning. As simple and popular as the quote maybe very few of us have actually sat down and done what it says. That is counting your blessings. With the fast changing and demanding world of today people are busy with the hassles and bassles of life. Some have turned into perpetual complainants. “I should have this and that; I am not this and that; maybe I should be this and that”. Well maybe you should stop complaining and count your blessings.

You are better than the next person

Have you ever realized that there are more people in a much worse position than you are in? If you are able to read this article on the internet I would consider you much lucky and privileged. The fact that you are going through a difficult situation does not necessarily mean you are not blessed. Thank your creator that; you are alive and not dead; you are better than the man who sleeps on the streets and does not know where his next meal will come from.

No matter what your circumstances maybe, be rest assured that someone out there is in a worse off situation than you. I am not trying to condemn your position nor encourage you to stay in your current position but merely trying to uplift you so that you look to the brighter side of life. Also know that some of those who have succeeded in life have come from much worse situations than you are in. The difference is that they turned their difficult circumstances and ceased the opportunity and moved on from there.

If you are in position of need I believe that “necessity is the mother of invention”~ Proverb. I find it impossible to mention a product that was not invented for a purpose. I would challenge you to name one. If you are hungry go find work, get paid and buy food. Do not seat idle and wait to be fed.

 Count it all joy

Maybe you are in a job that does not pay you enough; well firstly money is never enough and secondly, thank God, you at least have an income to count on. The more you earn the more you spend. Maybe your business is not doing fine at least you are trying and doing something.

Count it all joy in everything you are doing because your blessing is on the way. Keep the faith and always remember to give thanks to your creator for whatever little you have. Growth comes through the small things that we get and when put together they become big. I have learnt to be happy with what I have and I thank my creator for it. Have you ever given a small child a gift even though it is not enough and they say thank you dad for the toy with a smile on their face? How does that make you feel? Exactly the same with our creator but, he has more compassion than you and me can comprehend. I just feel that it is polite to just say thank you for any gift you receive.

Do not despair you are blessed

Why do you despair for it is written “do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” ~ the bible. Instead take time to appreciate what you have. Many times we do not realize that half a loaf in your hands is better than none. Appreciate the children that you have; thank God for your wife; thank him for your life, there is so much to be thankful for even in your current situation.

Take a minute to think that right now as you are reading this article there are some people gasping for air in hospitals yet, you are freely taking in the same air without a gasp. Forget about your worries and start counting your blessings.

I hope this article has helped you realize that you are such a blessed human being and that if you are going through trials and tribulations consider them as challenges. Imagine life without challenges wouldn’t that be boring? I believe that after every storm comes calmness. May the peace of the lord be upon your life and always remember to “standout tall and be counted”.
