Learn to Keep Your Dreams Alive

Motivational Quotes

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” – Anatole France.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Serenity Prayer

Cease to ask what the morrow will bring forth, and set down as gain each day that Fortune grants.” – Horace.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called present.” – Unkonwn

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

The key to happiness is having dreams. The key to success is making your dreams come true.

We all have dreams, but life can be a discouragement. Life has a way of pushing our dreams backward.

We all have gone through a rough patch in our lives and this may have resulted in burying our dreams. There are various reasons why our dreams are buried.

Some dreams are buried under bad health; some are buried under divorce and still, most people are buried with their dreams. Dr. Myles Monroe says the richest place on earth is the cemetery.

This is where you find songs that have never been sung; books that have never been written; paintings that have never been painted; businesses that have never been actualised; the buildings that have never been built and many other dreams that will never be realised.

Even though your dreams have been buried, for as long as you still have the breath of life they are still alive, I believe that God has not forgotten about them.

Your dreams may be buried but they are not dead.

I know that most of us are discouraged when we are met with adversity. But do you realise that obstacles are part of the bigger picture to help you achieve your dreams?

The adversities we face are part of the process we go through to actualise our dreams. The many obstacles that we encounter are part of the journey to achieving our dreams.

There is no success without overcoming obstacles. They say success is measured by the many obstacles that you overcome.

The fact that you have dreams does not necessarily mean that they will be achieved without hard work and persistence.

Yes, it’s very important and necessary to have dreams but that does not guarantee that you will not come across challenges. Life is full of challenges and I believe that these are meant to prepare us for a better future.

I want to let you know that it is never too late to realise your dreams. It does not matter how old you are if you awaken the dreams that God put on your heart you will surely achieve them.

The bible says I will restore the years that the locust has eaten”. God has a way of giving us back our lost time.

Do not die with your dreams, but allow God Almighty to help you share your dreams with the world.

When God created you, he put in you all the gifts and talents needed to overcome any adversity and obstacle that you may encounter on your way to achieving your goals.

He put in you the ability to change adversity into diversity; the ability to overcome obstacles.

Write Down Your Dreams

We must keep a hard copy of our dreams. Most successful people have written down their dreams.

Read goals and goal setting for more details. There is a saying that when you write down your dreams when people read them, they will most likely follow them and this will eventually help you realise them even more quickly.

Writing down our dreams also acts as a constant reminder to us. Every so often it is important to refer back to them and constantly remind ourselves of what we want to achieve.

Believe me, it is not easy to commit to something we have not written down. Regularly review your progress and make improvements. This can only be done if you have written them down.

I have developed a habit of writing down what I want to achieve. Every year I make resolutions and set out goals to be achieved.

I make sure that they conform to the bigger picture of what my life’s intended purpose is.

Life is becoming more bearable for me as each day I focus on what I want to achieve. Yes, sometimes I find myself fire fighting. But I always try as much as possible to learn from fire fighting instances.

Sometimes we may feel that there are too many setbacks, but do you realise that those same “setbacks” are “setups” to achieving our dreams?

They propel you to see beyond the current circumstances. In every bad situation, there is always something positive.

We may not understand it but I think God does not let us go through the storm alone. He always provides a way where there seems to be no way.

God is always with us and he is always providing guidance. The currents that determine our dreams and shape our lives, flow from the attitudes that we nurture every day.

Speak Life to Every Dead Situation

There is power in your tongue. What you say usually comes to pass. Remember that even during creation the Bible tells us in Genesis that every time God spoke: “it came to be”.

For example on the first day of creation God said “let there be light” and here we are today, we have light throughout the day.

All through creation we are told God said whatever he wanted to see and that is what came out and was created.

To me, this demonstrates the power that the tongue holds. We are in our current situations mostly because of what we hold as thoughts and what we have said in the past.

In other words, we have created our situations knowingly or unknowingly.

If you go about complaining about how hard the economy is and how things are not working out for you, that is exactly what will come to pass in your life.

Have you noticed that when economists predict a rise in inflation or commodity prices that is exactly what happens around the world? And the opposite is also true.

This is equally true even with us on an individual level. When we speak positively about our life things begin to change.

Therefore, it is important that you learn to always speak positive words of encouragement when faced with negative situations.

One source of encouragement is the Bible. God has promised us so many good things even when we are faced with adversities.

If you are sick, begin to claim your healing because the bible promises us good health and long life. “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation” – the Bible.

It may take time but every time you speak healing to your body you unbury your dreams of being healthy again.

Begin to see yourself walking and living your dreams because God promised it. Speak positive affirmations to all negative situations in your life.

Yes, you may be struggling financially but remember that God promised that he shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory. Not some, but all of them.

Trust in God

Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name” – the Bible.

At the end of the day, we are all created by God in his image and likeness.

It’s like when we buy an appliance, the first thing we do is read the user’s manual and understand how the new appliance works and what its limitations are.

The mere fact that we take time to read what the manufacturer’s manual says, we are placing our trust in the manufacturer because they are the creators of that appliance.

We are acknowledging that the manufacturer knows the appliance better than us and gives us instructions on how to use it.

I think it’s the same with us as human beings. If we live trusting God he surely does not let us down. Yes, sometimes things may not go as we want them, but God Almighty knows what’s best for us.

All things work out for the better if we put our trust in God.

Over the years I have learned to trust God. There are times when I feel that he is far away from me but my plans are not his.

I know for sure that he has much much better plans for my life than I can imagine. I try as much as possible to live my life according to his plans.

The fact that am still alive is testimony enough that God cares about me. You may not realise it but we all have many things to thank God for.

If it’s wealth, I believe that this world has more than enough to round for all the 6 billion + inhabitants.

Most of the time we find ourselves on the wrong end because we ignore what God is telling us, and usually, this is done out of selfish motives.

There is a time I learned the hard way. I was trying to grow some tomatoes on a large scale for sale.

God had clearly told me to do my own seedlings, this would have meant that I plant the seeds and wait for at least a month before transplanting them, but instead, I decided to go and buy the seedlings. I was trying to cut down on waiting time.

They started very well and I thought you see I could have wasted time. My my my I lost everything after putting in so much effort and wasting money on fertilisers and chemicals.

By the time I decided to do what God had earlier told me it was too late and the rains were upon us. I guess God was trying to guide me to work within his plans.

We should show our lives not as it is or how it ought to be, but only as we see it in our dreams” – Count Leo Tolstoy.

I believe that every reasonable human being has a dream, in fact, many dreams.

The difference between successful people and average people is that successful people have kept their dreams alive and are seriously perusing them.

If you are reading this article I know that you have dreams, it is my prayer and hope that you will ask God to not allow you to go to the grave without realising them.

I also hope and trust that you have found this article useful and that it has helped stir up your long-buried dreams.

Have a blessed day and go and realise your dreams always remember to “standout tall and be counted”. Revised on 06/03/2021.

Learning from failure

We have all failed before and this is a challenge to everyone. Failure can be a very powerful way to assess your performance and find meaningful ways to improving yourself. Ask yourself about the day’s failures and successes and what can be gleaned, then hold yourself accountable. Take note of those factors that contributed to your day’s failure they surely will not go away without you taking action. I like the saying by Bill Cosby “I don’t know the key to success but the key to failure is to try to please everyone”. This is a fact.

Many of us have not even tried to start up a business or indeed do something that we have always longed to do, for fear of failing. I know that failing is part of my daily life. The difference between successful people and the average guy is the way failure is handled. The successful guys always make it a point to learn from the mistakes and failures, were as most of us just stop at failure. If you make it point to sit down and analyse the causes of your failure you will succeed at whatever you do.

Learning from failure is therefore an important aspect to being successful so is taking time to analyse your daily failures (no matter how small). The following tips may help you learn from your daily failures and improve on them.

Ask yourself questions

I would encourage you to have time to review your day on a daily basis. This is a very helpful habit and it only takes about 15mins. If you can get a piece of paper and a pen and write down the points. You will realise that most or some of the important decisions are made in the serenity of your home or just about bedtime. When your mind is relaxed. Some useful questions to ask yourself would be:-

  • what failures did I experience today?
  • what are the lessons to be learned from them?
  • how do I change them or improve on them
  • is there any need for me to have external help?

At first it may seem cumbersome to review your day but you will agree with me that every time you have an important decision to make, you will usually sleep over it and in most cases decisions are made just before sleeping and reviewed in the morning. That’s just how my mind works. You may also want to take note of your successes made during the day.

Have a plan and be accountable

Draw a plan of action. Remember that those attributes that contributed to your failure will not go away until action is taken. If there one I believe in is making decisions. They have to be made wrong or right and action taken. By taking action you are moving a step closer to successfully achieving your intended goal or purpose. In your plan include what behaviours you think you need to improve on or change.

Secondly be accountable. If you are in business find a very responsible partner and be accountable to them. You can also be accountable to yourself but please be honest. One of the best ways to be accountable to yourself is to put yourself on the other side. Imagine that you are the leader and expect results from your subordinate. What quality of results do you want from your junior. How would you react if the results are not as you expected and what would you have done.

Let your plan guide you

Stick to your plan. Let your plan be the guide. Of you have a partner you are accountable to ensure that he is strict on you until you change your daily patterns that contribute to your failures.  It takes time patience and repetition to improve. One of the best ways to success is sticking to your plan. Ensure that you have a good plan and keep on improving on it.

We all fail a little every day. We can learn from those small failures as well as daily successes when we reflect. There can never be success without failure. I have personally not come across a successful person who has never failed. Do not feel discouraged when at first you fail after all success is synonymous with failure. Remember that we all have failed at some point in life and will keep failing everyday but always be accountable for your actions and above all “standout tall and be counted”.

4 Reasons why memory should be improved on

Surely there can never be personal growth without someone having a Memory. Perhaps one of the key physical ingredient to personal development is having a good memory. We use it in our daily lives but often we take it for granted. Imagine life without memory. You would not even remember your own family. Yet not many people realize the important function that memory has in our lives. But this should not be the case. Having a great memory is vital to our survival and personal growth. The ability to remember is what is called memory. This ability can either be improved or neglected.

Most of us are content with an average size memory. The little science I know tells me that the difference between being a smart student and and average one is the ability to quickly recall what has been learned when needed. Thus, it is important that you take steps to better your memory. Here are 4 reasons why you should:

Memory defines who we are
Our daily lives are made up of the things we do and the things we do are stored up in our memory. The memories in your lives define who you are. Try erasing all your memories and you will not have a sense of who you are. It is the experiences that we have in the past that will determine who will be in the future. Without a memory of the past, we will find it hard to go forward in the future. Most of the decisions we make today are based on our past experiences. Without which we will have to start building relationships again and have a sense of who we are like what we did when we were still growing up.

In all our entire lives we heavily depend on our memory. I cannot remember a day I never used my memory maybe you can. I say this to stress the point that our memory defines who we are. You are nothing without memory.

It helps us learn
We are continuously learning things in our everyday lives and we use our memory to learn new things and develop new skills. Without memory I can bet anyone they would not have been schools. It would have been impossible learn. Memory is actually important in school where we need to memorize a lot of information in order to pass our examinations. Memory is the one that we rely on when it comes to examinations and recitations. But memory is not just for memorizing. Knowledge is also acquired with the use of memory. We learn to do things because of our brain’s work.

As I said before learning is a continuous process that cannot be achieved without the aid of memory. The sharper your memory the quicker you will learn new things. It is therefore, very important that you improve on your memory for this purpose. Un improved memory is a get way to doing things better and faster.

It helps us with our jobs
Although we will not be answering examination questions when we are on the job, we need memory to help keep up with our schedules and the meetings that we have had with people. There are professionals who rely a lot on excellent memory. You need it as a secretary when you have to be on top of your boss’ schedules. You need it when you are a journalist especially in remembering statements that your interviewees have made. You even need it as the owner of the company. You need to remember all the products that you are manufacturing, the capital that you used and the income that you get for the second quarter of the year etc.

You need it especially of you are like me who deals with figures every day. I always have to answer questions from the top of my head in meetings. I cannot imagine what it would be like if I lost my memory today. I would definitely find it very difficult to work. Even as I write this blog I am heavily relying on my memory.

It helps build relationships
People who easily remember the names of people are seen as much warmer and more intelligent than those who can’t remember names even on the same night. This is why personal relations employees are trained to remember names on an instant as this shows respect and appreciation for others. When people remember our names, we feel a sense of importance and we in turn forward those feelings of good will to that person.

Having an excellent memory also helps people remember birthdays. This is especially true with men who usually forget dates of anniversaries and birthdays especially for their spouses. People who remember special dates come across as more thoughtful and more caring as opposed to those who forget all the time. Even if remembering birthdays are not really a sign of love or a measure of love, people still see it that way.

Memory is actually a reflection of our mental processes. Having excellent memory usually means that you have great brain power. Thus, when you are making an effort to better your memory, you are also improving the way you think. And with that, you don’t really need so many reasons.

We must always keep our memory in excellent condition as it forms an integral part of our personal development. No single person I know can achieve their personal goals without having an excellent memory. Our memory defines what we are, what decisions to make and who we want to associate with. Always remember to “standout tall and be counted” and commit what you have read today to memory.

Leadership Personal Development

You are a leader

Leadership begins with you. We are all born leaders. It does not matter where you are or what kind of work you do, you are born a leader. Our lives are governed by the small things that we do everyday. “One of the responsibilities of leadership is to seek out and develop the latent talent of those members who, for various reasons, have never had a real chance to demonstrate their ability.” – Clem Renouf. I like to define leadership as the “ability to influence”. We all have the ability to influence. In you there is the ability to “influence” waiting to be awakened. Most people have not awakened their leadership abilities some may say they have never been given the opportunity to do so. I want to encourage those in this bracket to create the opportunities themselves. There is no better opportunity than that created by you. I have created this blog as an opportunity to help someone out there. I believe that this is a perfect opportunity and forum for me to show my leadership qualities and I am improving on them on a daily basis. I am neither a guru nor a perfect human being but I strive just like everybody else to become a better person everyday.

If you take the time to improve just 1% of your every day life say your work, imagine how much you would have improved after a single month. Improving our selves is the beginning of showing leadership qualities. There are many ways in which to improving our leadership qualities but I live by the following four principles:-

I have learnt that one of the most powerful tools to leadership ability is learning. Read and read and read. Read books that motivate, inspire and strengthen your character; books that remind you of our greatest leaders of the world. Some of my favorite books are the Holy Bible, the Master Key System by Charles Haanel, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, As a Man Thinketh by James Allen and The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles. Knowledge is paramount to whatever we do in our lives. The more knowledge you gain the more you increase the ability to something even better.

I have a target to read at least one new book along side one of my favorite books every month. But I read the Bible every single day. I want to encourage you to do even more by reading two books every month. I have written an article entitled “Knowledge is Key to Success” where I outline the importance of learning and acquiring knowledge. Learning never ends. Each day we are alive we are continuously learning new things. Apart from reading you can also learn by listening to audiobooks on various subjects such as team building, person motivation and relationships. Attend seminars on motivational topics, team building talks and many other subjects that will uplift you.

Make a point to have a continuous learning life. You will also realize that you are a student of your self. Some of you do not know yourself very well. Have an open mind and ken interest to learning new things. Do not resist change but embrace it. Many of the times we as human beings will always resist change. Explore the change being introduced for opportunities to express your leadership qualities. Usually change brings with it new and different opportunities explore them, don’t be content with what you have.

Perhaps at the centre of all human development is the state of the mind. Our outer achievements are a direct reflection of our inner achievements. What we think results in our action. If your thought is constructive the action is good, if your thought is destructive so are your actions. Everything that was created was first conceived in the mind before being given birth to the world. This also is true about you and me. Before you can be, you see yourself to be. You cannot be without seeing yourself to be.

To awaken the leadership quality in you, you must realize that all achievements begin in the mind. Your dominant thoughts have a direct bearing on your character. One common attribute of great leaders is that the spend most of their time thinking positively and remaining focused. We all have dreams and it is entirely up to each and every one of us to keep them alive and bring them into reality.

To be leader you must find time especially in the morning to visualize your self achieving your goals. Have time to yourself. Find the most appropriate time during the day when you can spend at least an hour to your self. Mine is usually early in the morning at about 5.00am. I would also encourage you to be an early riser. This gives me time to read meditate and exercise. I know that waking up earlier is not easy for some people. The start is always difficult but once you make it your way of life it becomes a part of your routine.

Set Targets

Setting and reconnecting on a regular basis with your targets is a good success discipline. Good leadership ability demands that you set goals that are achievable. I have one philosophy, set goals that are achievable but over deliver. Exceeding your goals gives you a sense of good feeling. You must try as much as possible to set yourself targets maybe on a yearly basis and broken down into smaller bits that will help you monitor your own progress.

Target setting is helpful in what ever area of your life. One must learn to set reasonable and achievable goals. Yes I know that sometimes we set goals that are difficult to achieve but we must try and reach them anyway. One of the best ways to monitor your goals is to write them down say in a dairy. Review your achievements on a regular basis and compare them with your main goals. Remember our lives and characters are made up of the small things that we do everyday. Try and improve on your weaknesses say by 1% everyday and see how much improvement you will have made in one month.

Stay Healthy

Leadership is influenced by what you eat. Staying healthy is also influenced by your diet and your way of living. One sure way of staying healthy is having a good diet and regular exercise. I try as much as possible to eat healthy and balanced diets. I must be very honest am not as disciplined as should be when it comes to diets but I exercise on a regular basis.

It is no point being a good leader and not in good health. We must try by all means to keep our bodies in good health and enjoy the days of our lives. If you have noticed “what you eat determines how well you will perform”. Avoid over eating and train your self to eat at the right time. Also eat in moderation. Staying healthy is key and beneficial to us all.

This is probably one of my longest articles so far. Leadership is very wide and difficult subject. What I believe is that we are all born leaders and it is the ability and wiliness to take up challenging roles that differentiate us. Many of us think being in high offices is leadership. I want to believe that we can all be leaders in whatever spheres of life we choose. In your quest for personal development always remember to “standout tall and be counted
