Why is it important to live consciously or have a conscious mind? Do you live consciously? “I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor” – Henry D Thoreau. Many of us live our lives on auto pilot. We just flow with the wind. We find our selves and lives drifting with the wind. One of the most important aspects of personal development is to develop a habit of living consciously. This helps create a sense of expectation and builds confidence in us. Confidence also helps build motivation. Over the years I have developed a mechanism to doing things consciously and this has a really benefited me from my daily life. I have noticed a surge in my productivity and a major shift in my efficiency levels.

I have noticed that by living consciously, there is very little room for mistakes and surprises as most the work and things are done with full alertness and knowledge of the consequences. Conscious living is one of my key themes for this web site and as such I will be talking about it very frequently in the coming articles. You will agree that most of the things we do are done almost unconsciously but it is very beneficial to take control of your daily living by creating a conscious mind. You should develop an attitude of doing or carrying out your daily activities consciously as this allows you to take control of yourself and your inner being.

Habits can be learned and unlearned. I can safely say that 99% of our habits are learned over time. I know that the only things that we are naturally born with as human beings is the fear of falling and the fear of noise. That is why you will notice that most babies get very uncomfortable when you take them in noisy places. The rest of the habits are learnt over a period of time. When I say all habits can be learned I mean just that, including bad ones. Now if all habits can be learned it is therefore, very possible that you can learn the habit of living consciously. If you put your mind to it and practice the habit of doing things consciously you will notice an improvement in your daily life and execution of your work.

Practice makes perfect
To help with living consciously you must tell yourself in the morning that I shall endeavour to do things consciously to day and keep reminding yourself. Some how the brain keeps checking and alerting you when it is conditioned to carry out tasks in a certain way. Am always reminded by my sub conscious every time am performing a task. Being a conscious person has really helped me in the execution of my daily tasks. I have also developed the habit of writing down my daily tasks as a way of remembering what should be done at a particular time. I take a review of my to do list every night. This I do mentally and believe me my success rate has dramatically improved overtime. Practice living consciously for the next 21 days and it will become a habit for you. If you do something for 21 days continuously it becomes a habit. They say practice makes perfect.

Conscious living is one of the best ways to improve your personal growth and increase your productivity. Like I said before you will reduce your proneness to surprises and errors. You will do tasks with a peace of mind knowing that, what you have delivered is actually what you intended to deliver. It may not be the correct delivery as required but, then it is what you as an individual intended to deliver. When you have developed  the habit of living consciously you will also enhance the spirit of expectation. It is good practice to always double check your work as this will ensure quality production. Now don’t get me wrong there are times when my work has been terribly below par. The only comforting thing with me, is that I have also development a habit of accepting criticism no matter how hard it is.

Accept criticism
I believe that there is a lot of positiveness in accepting criticism. A good leader is one that accepts both praises and criticism. If you are in a leadership position, which we all are, you should learn to tolerate and accept criticism. A leader has a responsibility to the people he is leading. If you are a husband then you are a leader for wife, children and your entire house hold. In fact we are all leaders of our self and all work for me company limited. You are solely responsible for your life and the direction you take. Most of us are still waiting for someone to lead our lives. Now if you are a Christian like me you will say, but God is my shepherd yes he is but he is not responsible for the decision you make. Most of the times he leads as to certain places but we are always making the wrong decisions and end up in wrong places.

If you are directly responsible for leading a group of people the more reason why you should have a big heart for accepting criticism. After all we do not have the monopoly of knowledge. Some of it will be as blunt and as direct and sometimes may seem like an insult but that is what leadership is all about. It is about taking in all the criticism and providing solutions and hope to the team. You may not have the answers right away but people should have the confidence that you will guide them through the storm. Leaders must learn to create a sense of hope and trust in their followers.

Those in leadership must learn to take responsibility for both positive and negative out comes. I believe that criticism helps us grow as individuals. It is very important that we analyse it and make a deliberate effort to improve. As human beings I have noticed that we do not take criticism very well and mostly we just want to take only the positive aspects of the praises.If we have to grow as individuals we must take responsibility for all our actions both negative and positive. Leaders must realise that they have more on their shoulders than their followers. With more, there is more that is expected of you.  The more or the larger the organisation being lead the more demands placed on the leadership. “The speed of the leader determines the rate of the pack” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Living consciously is more beneficial to individuals as it gives us control of our lives and helps with productivity. Living consciously

“Would you bring into your life more power? Get the power consciousness; more health? Get the health consciousness; more happiness? Get the happiness consciousness”. Live the spirit of these things until they become yours by right. It will then become impossible to keep them away from you. Our consciousness has a direct bearing on what our moods and the kind of life we are leading. When you become conscious about a situation it does usually come to pass. Living consciously is one of the powerful ways to achieving your life’s purposes.

The power of consciousness
Consciousness is a powerful tool and this powerful tool lies within each one of us. The power of consciousness cannot be measured. It is immense. It all starts with the mind. When the creative power of thought is fully understood, its effect will be seen to be marvelous. But such results cannot be secured without proper application, diligence and concentration.  Abundance, therefore, depends upon recognition of the laws of Abundance, and the fact that Mind is not only the creator, but the only creator of all there is. The whole world is on the eve of a new consciousness, a new power and a new realization of the resources within itself.

Day by day as you go on and on with your life, as you gain momentum, as your inspiration deepens, as your plans crystallize, as you gain understanding, you will come to realize that this world is no dead pile of stones and timber, but that it is a living thing! It is made up of the beating hearts of humanity. It is a thing of life and beauty. Your mind is creative, and conditions, environment and all experiences in life are the result of your habitual or predominant mental attitude.

If your mind is predominantly saying you are sick the body will succumb and sickness will creep in. if your mind is on the positive side be rest assured that you will attract positive results. Having a positive mind set is a sure way of achieving your desired purpose in life.

The attitude of your mind depends on what you predominantly harbour as thoughts. All possession is based on consciousness. All gain is the result of an accumulative consciousness. All loss is the result of a Scattering consciousness.

The benefits of living consciously

Look here, there are many benefits of living consciously and I would recommend and encourage you to start living consciously of what you want to become in your life. Start today and see what results you will yield in the next few months. I believe that all great achievers have been living consciously of their achievements long before the even achieved much. When you live consciously you attract that which you are conscious of.

To effectively benefit from living consciously you need to have a devised a life’s purpose and plan. Without which you will have no direction. You need to ask yourself what it that you want changed in this world. How can you help change it? These are tough questions and there is no correct or wrong answer but they have to be answered by you and I. surely there is something within you that can help change the world for the better. There is something that you dislike, something that you see is wrong, well stop complaining and do something about it. To this effect we must be weary and alive to what we feed our conscious mind. Remember the bible tells us “that out of the abundance of the heart the month speaks”.

When you live consciously you are generally a happy, fulfilled and confident person. Yes you will across negative things brush them aside. Do you realize that even in a heated conversation there are positive things that come out? I have found and realized that you can actually pickup encouraging words even from an argument. Forget all the negative things that happen to you and concentrate on the positive ones.

There is a story of a man who was carrying to luggage’s one big one in front and one very small one at the back. When asked what was in the luggage he answered that the one in front contains all the good words and things that have happened to him and the one behind is where he puts all the bad things and words that are said to him. He went on to say that in fact the bag behind is actually torn at the bottom so that every time he throws the bad things they straight away are thrown to the ground. Imagine having to carry all the good things that have happened to you.

I know that some of you reading this article have gone throw trying moments, take heart my friend there is always someone with more problems than you. Thank your creator at least you are still alive.

There many benefits to living consciously. The only encouragement I can give you is, try to be conscious of the things you want to become. When you are conscious to them you attract them to you and you are alive to them. Imagine yourself being that leader you want to become and start living like a leader, imagine yourself being that preacher and live like one in other words your consciousness determines your destiny and your daily life. He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything“. Have you ever felt that you are on the brink of success? That you can smell success in the air? That you can actually see success coming your way? That you can’t help but succeed in whatever you are doing? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you have hope. Keep the hope alive success is actually coming your way.

We all hope for something. We go to school with the hope of having a better and brighter future. No one on this earth can say that they have never hoped for anything in their life. I believe that for as long as you have the breath of life there is hope for you regardless of the current situation. We live our lives hoping for things to happen every day. When we sleep we hope to wake up the next day at least I do. We work with the hope of getting paid. It is hope that drives our lives.

What is hope?

Imagine every day to be the last of a life surrounded with hopes, cares, anger and fear. The hours that come unexpectedly will be much the more grateful” ~ Horace. Lets start by defining what hope is, “a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen”. Hope is perhaps the most important source of motivation. Hope is the principal emotion towards the future. Resilience is just but a benefit of hope. Hope is precisely, the most central emotion related to the future. We must therefore, strive to acquire and keep it alive, if we are to achieve our intended goals. With hope on your side you can overcome mountains. You have come, this far in life because of the hope that is in you.

You have succeeded because you have kept the spirit of hope alive. Never lose hope or you will die. It is hope that keeps me writing knowing that someone out there is being helped by my articles and I hope that am doing a good job.

Enhance hope

Every one of us should know how to maintain and increase hope in our selves. I have devised a short list of the activities that help me enhance hope in my life. If it works for me it could work for you, make the list a daily part of your habits. Remember habits become character and character becomes your destiny.

  • Hopeful thinking – make efforts to see good and better results when thinking about the future. What you expect from the start determines the future out come. Broaden your thoughts about the future. Your thoughts are closely linked with your hopes. Remember always that you attract whet you think. If you have negative hopes you will definitely reap negative rewards.
  • Have positive thoughts – the more positive thoughts you harbour in your mind the more hope you generate. Look for specific and modifiable reasons to regain control over past failures and place hope in the future. Reject negative thoughts. Anxiety does not help, it takes away valuable energy from your batteries, send encouraging messages to yourself e.g. Henry you will definitely achieve your goals, this is just a temporary set back. Try again at the next available chance.
  • Reflect on the past with serenity – focus on the pleasant things and appreciate them with gratitude. Doing this makes you look at the future in a more positive way. It is therefore very important that you learn from your past failures. I know that we all have failed at some point in life and believe me you will encounter failure in the very near future. Reflect and learn from it.
  • In moments of despair break the cycle by – watching nature, entertaining yourself with something different, listen to music, talk to some old pals or just do anything that distracts you from your current thought patterns. We all go through challenges and it is just important that you clear your mind from them. gain composure and focus on resolving them positively.
  • Be optimistic – hope and optimism are closely related, they always have been. Always have two ways of interpreting the same fact. Everything has a positive and negative side. Examine both but enjoy the positive side of results. There are many encounters in life that can be life changing both positively and negatively. What you choose or follow is what will determine and shape your future.
  • Reading and meditating on maxims of wisdom – is a proven method of elevating ones motivation. Find peace and strength to nourish your hope. One very good book to read is the Holy Bible. You can never go wrong reading the bible. It is full of hope and helps to nourish your mind.
  • Find a good social circle – hope does not only increase through your own influence but also through other people’s influence. Look for people who enjoy hope and be friends with them. Offer your help and see how well you will be received and appreciated. This will make you gain a vision of hope. Vision is an important part of personal development. Without vision and knowledge it is difficult to achieve personal development.
  • Encourage and give hope to others – personal growth also includes transmuting and approaching others with a positive influence. Speak hope to someone going through trials, encourage them, and make them believe that it is just a passing phase and that everything is going to be fine. I personally feel that it is our responsibility to offer hope and help to people who need it. In this vein it is also very important that you ask for help when that time comes.
  • Care for your physical well being – take good care of yourself so that your thinking habits may be hopeful. A simple and varied diet, rest exercise and activity, plenty of water, absence of toxic substances and trusting in God can be of great help to enhancing your hope. When you are in good health you will spend less time worrying and spend more time hoping for good things. Let me encourage you if you are experiencing bad health to focus on getting healed and one best way to do it is to hope for the best. Focus your mind on being healed and hope for the best results.

Hope is a quality closely related to religious faith. Most of the religions are founded on hope or consider it as an important part of religion. Hope links past, present and future. Hope offers eventual and definite end. Keeping thoughts of courage, power, confidence and hope all produce a positive state of mind. Hope;

  • offers salvation
  • is essential to survival
  • takes more than human effort to attain it
  • brings about joy
  • focuses on a perfect and eternal reward.

Conclusion

Hope is a quality that should be nurtured and kept alive in our hearts. Without it we cannot achieve our goals and personal development is but a mere philosophy.
