You have to measure what you want more of” – Charles Coonradt. Self-improvement takes a lot of hard work. Writing, being productive, managing your finances and improving your social life, all of these
pursuits take a great deal of energy and time. They can also be a little overwhelming and they all need to be measured to ascertain your progress.

Life is not static, it is dynamic. Things are always in motion. Life dictates that we grow and that all growth is from inside. Change is inevitable. The things we used to do five years ago cannot be done today. What was fashionable a few years ago is no longer fashionable now. This therefore, demands that you measure your progress every step of the way, if you have to keep up with life. Many of us have remained behind and are just moving with the wind. They say time waits for no one.

If you want to succeed you need to develop habits that will help you achieve your objectives. Now, I would not consider my self as  successful, but I know that am on the right track and path. Although, I still remain a very much work in progress in many aspects of my life I equally have made great success in some other aspects of which am very happy and proud of. It is very important that we learn how to measure and monitor our progression in life. In doing so we must also bear in mind that we are living our own race and are not in competition with anyone. This is very important.

Many of the times, people end up taking short cuts and find themselves in an wanted situations. It is not good to cut corners in life. One of the people I was privileged to have met and I thank God for bringing him in my life, was an engineer. I met this man for a few years but oh the wisdom he shared with me was very valuable. He became a father like figure to me even though we met on a professional level. The man always used to encourage me to do the right things and never cut corners because life has a way of catching up.

He shared with me his personal life experiences and you could see that even in his advanced age he had nothing to hide. From him I learnt that those who live to enjoy life are those who do the right the things all the time, even when it is not fashionable amongst their peers.

If you have to be successful at what ever you do, it is very important that you learn how to measure your progress. Knowing how to measure ones progress in life is one of the yards sticks of achieving your goals. This however, is not taught in schools. Yet, measuring progress is the norm at school and often times the teacher will give you a test. The purpose of the examination is to gauge the progress of the learners. It even gets worse when you attend tertiary institutions were you cannot proceed to the next semester without passing exams.

I believe that we need to change our educational system to start teaching learners how to be successful and not just for the sake of acquiring knowledge. Success principles must be included as put of our school curriculum. “Success has always been easy to measure. It’s the distance between one’s origins and one’s final achievement” – Michael Korda.

With the demands of life what has helped me greatly is to know how to measure my progress. Measuring my progress has more benefits in helping me be the right track. It helps me to be more efficient on my productivity; am more organised as I keep reviewing my performances regularly; I get more and more organised. Right now I have become a little more efficient on my article writing because I jot down my ideas as they pop up. This efficiency is largely due to reviewing my progress on a regular basis.

If you critically think about it. Your natural inclination is always to improve. How then do you know where you are going without keeping score of your progress? If you were to keep a scoresheet on the five things that would advance your personal and professional objectives the most, imagine how motivated you would be each time the numbers improved in your favour.

Conclusion

Remember, a real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided” – Tony Robbins. Decide where you need to keep score in order to manifest your vision and achieve your goals. Make sure to keep measuring your progress in all the areas of your life.

Keeping track of your achievements

Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive” ~ Harold Whitman. “Nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think” ~ Benjamin Disraeli

Positive life changes come to those who show dedication and discipline towards their purpose. Making the decision to change your mind is a step in the right direction. Every achievement has its seed in the mind and can only be realized by deliberate planning and execution. To get to the level of success that one aspires to, one must focus only on the positive things. The ability to stay motivated is the key ingredient to turning the tables on one’s fortunes.

One of the most interesting contributing factors to maintaining the high positive motivation levels always is to be able to physically see and acknowledge the progress and achievements made you have made. I usually take stock of my achievements on a quarterly basis. Some people do it on an annual basis others do it monthly. Keeping track of your achievements is perhaps be the best motivating factor of all because the satisfaction gained from a successfully completed project has no limits.

Keeping Track
Thus being able to keep track of one’s achievements is very important and here are popular ways that are commonly used for this purpose.

At the beginning of most well thought of projects, there is usually a good and reliable strategic plan in place be it marketing, business or personal development. This usually works as a check and balance formula to ensure everything stays on track. If it is a long term project a periodical review is the prudent way of monitoring progress.

Even when the project is successfully completed it is always prudent to draw up a summary of or things covering the details of the major aspects of the project and its contributions to the final outcome, making sure to quantify as many aspects as possible.

Compiling a folder of positive acknowledgements for the job well done is also another way to be able to track achievements. This of course is not only valuable to the future endeavors of the individual but also serves as a motivating factor.

Serving as both testimonials and references, these acknowledgements can also be used to build up an impressive portfolio for the individual from the expertise angle. It is always gratifying and satisfying to look at past projects that you have achieved with distinction. I must say that you should also not forget to look at the under achievements in your project. These can be used as learning lessons.

Participating in as many high profile external activities, company boards, internal committees, representations and other platforms that create the necessary experience and exposure is also recommended. After which keeping a well documented and monitored chart of the said activities to be used as a tracking element is also helpful in encouraging you to keep a positive mindset.

These achievements tracking helps to further project the extensive capabilities of the individual with the intention of creating an impressive portfolio.

Knowledge goes hand in hand with success. We have to learn from what we hear and see. If we surround ourselves with a positive and enriching environment, we accelerate our personal development. Therefore reading empowering books, watching motivational videos and attending seminars on personal development is the way to go.

Conclusion
Amazingly, we already have gathered immense knowledge in our journey of life. Sometimes when we search within ourselves we may find inspirational thoughts from the wealth of our experiences. Instead of tucking away this knowledge, why not write about them to inspire others. One might just find it extremely rewarding to put down one’s inspirational thoughts in an ebook. Bye for now and remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

3 reasons why leaders fail

We are all born leaders in one way or another. If you are not leading people, at least you are responsible for the leadership of your life. You will agree with me that a good leader takes risks and sometimes fails, the distinguishing  factor is that an effective leader learns from  his failure and moves forward. It is an realistic to assume that all forms of leadership are a success. In this article I outline some of the reasons why leaders fail. There are many factors though but I feel that the ones outlined below are the major reasons.

  • Not sharing and understanding the Vision

A good leader will share his vision or plan. This will allow his followers to understand him and see how they can fit in his vision or plan. I have noticed that most of our leaders have no clear cut vision to share. I have noted with displeasure especially amongst our African politicians. They have a tendency of not having a clear cut vision for their people and hence end up failing when they are in government.

Sharing the vision of the company or any other venture is very important. For the young manager it is very important that you understand the vision of the company before you get into leadership positions. A leader who does not know or understand the company vision and goals will be leading a team without goals. I want to liken this to a sports team. The manager of a football team knows that the vision and objective of the game is to produce positive results in this case beat every opponent in order to lift the first prize. He will then prepare his team accordingly and imparting the vision to his team members, in order to achieve the set goals.

If you are a CEO of a company and the your company has no vision for the future. Please formulate one and pass it on to your team and see how they will take it. Most likely they will quickly realign themselves to fit it.

  • Do Not Listen

Real leadership requires that you spend time listening to your team members. I have worked with a CEO who does most talking than listening and I can tell you he was not an inspiring leader. We had a high labour turnover at work and even the ones he really thought would stay longer did not. Reason being he was always talking and not listening and taking in criticism.

Giving a deaf ear to your team members’ suggestions and observations is a very good recipe for failure. A good and progressive leader will encourage his team players to speak out and give them an opportunity to heard. By not listening and taking constructive criticism the leader will end up having to make wrong and catastrophic decisions. I want to believe that if you cannot listen then you are not a leader you are a boss. Only bosses make final decisions without listening to other people’s inputs.

Leaders who are successful over the period have mastered the art of listening and allowing all the stakeholders to candidly express their opinions.

  •  Do not widen the Circle of Involvement

My last observation for leaders failure is a luck of widening the circle of involvement. As a company grows a strong leader will realise that there is need for more players to get involved. This is not the case nowadays as most companies want to maximise on profits and spend less on the much needed team players. There is something that most people in leadership positions forget and that is that you are made successful by your team and not yourself. Your team is capable of making you succeed or indeed fail. Having a widened circle of participants is good for company growth.

Great leaders continuously engage and involve more people in their vision. This will bring about change and support will grow both naturally and organically. With support from most of your team members the sky is the limit.

Conclusion

Ultimately there is no formula for leadership success. You can only find suggestions and how you apply them entirely depends on the kind of organisation and team players your are handling. The situations at play are different at all times hence I would encourage you to read more on leadership. I truly hope you found this article of great use.
