There is no safety in the “comfort Zone”

Motivational Quotes

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives”.  – Newell D. Hillis.

Life requires that we move on while our human nature dictates that we remain in our “comfort zone”.  Unfortunately our comfort zone does not provide for growth. When you remain in your comfort zone chances are that you will never grow. You are most likely to going to live a non fulfilling life. If you have to contribute meaningfully to society, and to your own well being, you have to move out of your comfort zone and explore the world. Explore the unknown and be bruised and battered to create your own safety zone. Those that make it in life are those that embrace challenges. Unfortunately most of us do not embrace challenges. We would rather complain and do nothing about it.

Most successful people have moved out of their comfort zone and are sailing the deep waters of the sea. They are enjoying the exploits of the sea called life. Where as most of us are scared of exploring the unknown world. We would rather remain in our “comfort zone” which is not even comfortable when you come to think of it. We see our friends progress and are envious of them. I feel that it is rather unfair to world that we demand to see change when we are doing nothing about it. If you want to see change be the change agent yourself.

I believe that change begins with you. It actually begins with a change of attitude in your thinking. All growth is the sum total of the small things that we do and have accomplished on a daily basis. Human beings are like a ship. To know the strength of a ship it must leave the safe harbour and sail the deep waters. The ship must be able to stand the stormy weather and sail back to the safe harbour.

You are the captain of that ship. You must learn to navigate through life and overcome the obstacles that come your way. It is only by exploring the world around that we discover many new and exciting things. I think that when God created us he designed us to explore and learn the world. If you want to grow in a certain area of your life you need to leave your comfort zone and start exploring new ways to improve.

Why should we explore the world?

You will agree with me that life was meant to be enjoyed. You cannot enjoy life to the fullest by being in the same position. One of the best ways to derive satisfaction in life is by exploring the world around you. Many of us are even dead scared to move to new places. We would rather die in one place and not explore new places. I am one person that has always enjoyed travelling. It is through travelling that I discovered that there is more life out there than in the city.

There is more natural beauty out there. God created us to be explorers of this world. There are more opportunities to be of service out there than where you are. I have discovered that the greatest joy one can derive from life is being of service to humanity. You will agree with me that when people appreciate your work it gives you more joy and satisfaction. The y say sharing is caring.

I have discovered that it very difficult to put up a building where there is already an existing structure. You will have to demolish it before you put up a new one; where as it is very easy to build a new structure where there is no building. The majority of us would rather go and build where it is crowded because we think that is where it is safe, when you can go and build where it is not crowded. No disrespect but I find cities to be crowded places. People are all fighting for very few or dwindling resources. I see building being erected where they are not supposed to be.

The world is full of untapped resources. It is therefore, our duty to explore and utilise these untapped resources. We are not doing ourselves a service by staying in one place and constantly fighting for the ever dwindling resources when there are more to be discovered and explored out their. I believe that God created more than enough resources to go round humanity. Imagine if David Livingstone did not have the courage to explore and discover the existence of the Mighty Victoria Falls or if Christopher Columbus did not discover the Americas and many other explorers that risked their lives travelling around the world. We would have probably not known about the existence of the many discoveries they made.

Take the challenge and leave the comfort zone

This year I have set myself a target to conquer some of my fears like public speaking. Yes you heard me right. Public speaking is one area most of us are scared of, especially me. My comfort zone has always been siting in the background and let other people do the talking whilst I silently criticise. To overcome this fear I have started preparing my self both physically and mentally. I am gathering material that I think will help me. Am also already seeing my self as a very good public speaker. Not necessarily motivational speaking but to just speak in front of an audience and do it exceptionally well. I hope that come the end of the year I shall be able to stand in front  of any audience and speak on a given subject with confidence.

You could also give yourself a challenge to overcome some of your fears. It could be the fear of starting a new business, the fear of relocating and so forth. Yes you will be faced with many obstacles at the very beginning, but your success will be determined by the way to rise up when you fall. I always encourage myself by repeatedly saying “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” – Philippians. I also take comfort by know that “if God is for us, who can be against us?” – Romans. I have personalised the Romans quote by replacing “us” with “me”. I say “if God is for me, who can be against me?”. I am not a perfect person am far from being one and would probably never be perfect. I have my own struggles many of them for that matter and have never been better than most of you.

I still struggle with so many things in my life. Forgive me if at any point I portrayed my self as a perfect person, it was not and will never be my intention.

I have lived most of my life with so many struggles however, in the last 10 years or so, there has been a drastic change in my life. I thank God almighty for giving me a second chance at life. Those that know me can attest to this. Am not blowing my own trumpet but just so that you can be encouraged from my own experiences.

Grow your faith and trust God

What seems impossible one minute, through faith, becomes possible the next” – Norman Vincent Peale. Lets begin by defining faith. “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” – The Bible. I believe and trust in God almighty for all the things that I do and hope to achieve. I think it is important to grow our faith and believe that God will help us achieve our goals. There is a nice phrase that I learned from the power of positive thinking by Dr. Norman V. Peale and I encourage you to apply it on a daily basis “God is with me. God is helping me. God is guiding me”. When you start moving into deeper waters you will need a lot of encouragement.

Always remember that God is on your side and is actually guiding you. Yes you will stumble along the way, but if your trust is in God he will certainly show you the way when you call on him.

Most of the times we remain in the safe harbour because we have no faith and we fear to fail. The more you grow your faith the more courage you gain. I guess there is a direct relationship between faith and courage. The only way to grow your faith is by reading and meditating on the word of God. Everyone who has ever succeeded has faith. They believe that they will achieve that which they have set out to accomplish even when they cannot see positive results instantly. Everything that is good is worth the effort.

The first step is to fill your life with positive faith that will help you through anything. The second step is to start where you are” – Norman Vincent Peale. Being in our “comfort zone” will not help us grow. You cannot produce meaningful results in life if you are content with what you currently have. You must show and demonstrate the desire and the will to achieve. Until next time remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

Happiness does not consist in pastimes and amusements but in virtuous activities.” ~ Aristotle. “When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That is my religion.” ~ Abraham Lincoln. There is a natural rebound of contentment and a sense of  accomplishment when you choose to do what’s right in each and every situation. The choice is between you and you. The right thing may not be the most convenient or easy, but when we face the truth, and act, we are building strength of character. Take whatever pains necessary to do what ought to be done because this is the way to living a good, decent, honorable life. With free will, each and every one of us must be responsible for our clean conscience.

When you accept the challenge to do the morally correct thing, to show compassion and to stay the course, often times you are rewarded just by having done the right thing. Every day we have a fresh opportunity to make good choices that will reward us in the act of doing what is appropriate. Try to always make the true choice in big and little areas of your life. Remember you are building character, every day and your choices are a big part of it.

If you are used to doing good you will agree with me that you are leaving a fairly satisfactory life and I can bet you are a happy person. I am not writing to condemn anyone but to encourage you to make a choice of doing the right thing even when it does not suite your current situation. This does not mean that I am perfect but I try as much as possible to make the right choices. I have realized that every time I think that I have made the correct choice there is a great sense of satisfaction and happiness.

Maybe I used to be like you always in the habit of making wrong decisions and choices, some of them deliberate just to suite me or get me out in a difficult situation. Well there is always a beginning to turn things around. You see the choices and decisions we make have a direct bearing on our character. “We are weaving character every day, and the way to weave the best character is to be kind and to be useful. Think right, act right; it is what we think and do that makes us what we are.” ~ Elbert Hubbard.

I believe we are all worthy but life’s rewards have to be earned. With such rewards comes a deep sense of integrity. We feel humble, blessed, and glad we chose rightly and did such a good job. We feel stronger, more self-reliant, and more dignified when we bravely face what we must do. We should take great satisfaction in doing the right things for our family and friends. But a most important thing to keep in mind is to be sure we make wise and wonderful choices for ourselves. Life is meant to be enjoyed and sometimes this comes with a little sacrifice.

Your choices and decisions must not only suite your family and friends but must be the correct ones. They must be decisions that have been made in good faith and based on love. Together, you and I can help change the world for the better by the choices we make and decisions we follow. Change starts with your mind and transformed in to reality.

Be the change you want the world to see and strive to make the right choices and decisions for your life. Making the right and correct decisions can be a source of happiness and refreshing to your mind and soul. We should choose to never bend the truth. The choices we make through rigorous discipline expand us, elevate us, and confirm all the good that is our essence. When we follow the right to the end, we’ll always feel satisfied and we’ll be in good company. “I will follow the right even to the fire but avoiding the fire if possible” ~ Montaigne.  Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

Leadership Personal Development

You are a leader

Leadership begins with you. We are all born leaders. It does not matter where you are or what kind of work you do, you are born a leader. Our lives are governed by the small things that we do everyday. “One of the responsibilities of leadership is to seek out and develop the latent talent of those members who, for various reasons, have never had a real chance to demonstrate their ability.” – Clem Renouf. I like to define leadership as the “ability to influence”. We all have the ability to influence. In you there is the ability to “influence” waiting to be awakened. Most people have not awakened their leadership abilities some may say they have never been given the opportunity to do so. I want to encourage those in this bracket to create the opportunities themselves. There is no better opportunity than that created by you. I have created this blog as an opportunity to help someone out there. I believe that this is a perfect opportunity and forum for me to show my leadership qualities and I am improving on them on a daily basis. I am neither a guru nor a perfect human being but I strive just like everybody else to become a better person everyday.

If you take the time to improve just 1% of your every day life say your work, imagine how much you would have improved after a single month. Improving our selves is the beginning of showing leadership qualities. There are many ways in which to improving our leadership qualities but I live by the following four principles:-

I have learnt that one of the most powerful tools to leadership ability is learning. Read and read and read. Read books that motivate, inspire and strengthen your character; books that remind you of our greatest leaders of the world. Some of my favorite books are the Holy Bible, the Master Key System by Charles Haanel, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, As a Man Thinketh by James Allen and The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles. Knowledge is paramount to whatever we do in our lives. The more knowledge you gain the more you increase the ability to something even better.

I have a target to read at least one new book along side one of my favorite books every month. But I read the Bible every single day. I want to encourage you to do even more by reading two books every month. I have written an article entitled “Knowledge is Key to Success” where I outline the importance of learning and acquiring knowledge. Learning never ends. Each day we are alive we are continuously learning new things. Apart from reading you can also learn by listening to audiobooks on various subjects such as team building, person motivation and relationships. Attend seminars on motivational topics, team building talks and many other subjects that will uplift you.

Make a point to have a continuous learning life. You will also realize that you are a student of your self. Some of you do not know yourself very well. Have an open mind and ken interest to learning new things. Do not resist change but embrace it. Many of the times we as human beings will always resist change. Explore the change being introduced for opportunities to express your leadership qualities. Usually change brings with it new and different opportunities explore them, don’t be content with what you have.

Perhaps at the centre of all human development is the state of the mind. Our outer achievements are a direct reflection of our inner achievements. What we think results in our action. If your thought is constructive the action is good, if your thought is destructive so are your actions. Everything that was created was first conceived in the mind before being given birth to the world. This also is true about you and me. Before you can be, you see yourself to be. You cannot be without seeing yourself to be.

To awaken the leadership quality in you, you must realize that all achievements begin in the mind. Your dominant thoughts have a direct bearing on your character. One common attribute of great leaders is that the spend most of their time thinking positively and remaining focused. We all have dreams and it is entirely up to each and every one of us to keep them alive and bring them into reality.

To be leader you must find time especially in the morning to visualize your self achieving your goals. Have time to yourself. Find the most appropriate time during the day when you can spend at least an hour to your self. Mine is usually early in the morning at about 5.00am. I would also encourage you to be an early riser. This gives me time to read meditate and exercise. I know that waking up earlier is not easy for some people. The start is always difficult but once you make it your way of life it becomes a part of your routine.

Set Targets

Setting and reconnecting on a regular basis with your targets is a good success discipline. Good leadership ability demands that you set goals that are achievable. I have one philosophy, set goals that are achievable but over deliver. Exceeding your goals gives you a sense of good feeling. You must try as much as possible to set yourself targets maybe on a yearly basis and broken down into smaller bits that will help you monitor your own progress.

Target setting is helpful in what ever area of your life. One must learn to set reasonable and achievable goals. Yes I know that sometimes we set goals that are difficult to achieve but we must try and reach them anyway. One of the best ways to monitor your goals is to write them down say in a dairy. Review your achievements on a regular basis and compare them with your main goals. Remember our lives and characters are made up of the small things that we do everyday. Try and improve on your weaknesses say by 1% everyday and see how much improvement you will have made in one month.

Stay Healthy

Leadership is influenced by what you eat. Staying healthy is also influenced by your diet and your way of living. One sure way of staying healthy is having a good diet and regular exercise. I try as much as possible to eat healthy and balanced diets. I must be very honest am not as disciplined as should be when it comes to diets but I exercise on a regular basis.

It is no point being a good leader and not in good health. We must try by all means to keep our bodies in good health and enjoy the days of our lives. If you have noticed “what you eat determines how well you will perform”. Avoid over eating and train your self to eat at the right time. Also eat in moderation. Staying healthy is key and beneficial to us all.

This is probably one of my longest articles so far. Leadership is very wide and difficult subject. What I believe is that we are all born leaders and it is the ability and wiliness to take up challenging roles that differentiate us. Many of us think being in high offices is leadership. I want to believe that we can all be leaders in whatever spheres of life we choose. In your quest for personal development always remember to “standout tall and be counted
