“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation” – Brian Tracy.

What is attitude? Attitude is “the way that you think, feel or behave” – Oxford Dictionary. Attitude is a complex mental state involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in a certain way.

We all have an attitude. Your attitude is usually the reaction you exhibit towards external stimuli. This is your response to an event or circumstance. How you react is totally dependant on the mental state of your mind, emotional feelings, and values you hold.

Your attitude towards life reflects the values you hold. This also reflects the way you live your life. If you have a positive mental attitude, you are more likely to live a very fulfilling and happy life. The opposite is also true if you have a negative mental attitude.

It is your responsibility to have a great attitude and maintain it. Remember that you have the power and control over the things that have a direct influence on your attitude. Do not think that your attitude runs on autopilot, no. You are responsible for it.

It is amazing to note that many of us are always giving excuses for our wrong or bad attitudes. Excuses, like I woke up on the wrong side, should never be entertained.

If you have to have a positive and successful life you should create a positive attitude towards life. Life gives you back what you give it.

Like I have said before, life will always give you surprises, what is important is the way you react to them. If you resolve to take a positive preposition, you will definitely triumph over any situation that may come your way.

I know, that sometimes it may be difficult to stay positive, but that’s what life entails, being able to overcome adversities.

We all fall down but very few get up. Even those that get up, very few rise quickly and strong enough to continue on the positive side of life.

You cannot control what happens around you, but you can consciously control your reactions and emotions. Attitude is everything, it governs the way you perceive the world and the way the world perceives you.

I have listed some of the strategies I use to help improve my attitude.

Lightening Up Life With Humor

They say laughter is medicinal. The more humor and laughter in your life the less stress you have. I try as much as possible to see the funny side of life every day. I believe that God created us to live a happy life but he also gave us a choice.

It is next to impossible to feel stressed, angry, anxious, or depressed when you laugh. Laughter not only provides pleasure, but it also serves to:

  • reduce stress and other forms of emotional misery such as anxiety and fear.
  • bond us with our fellow humorists, which in turn give us even more pleasure.
  • boosts our immune system, lowers our blood pressure, oxygenates our blood, relaxes our muscles, and increases our pain tolerance, all of which gives us much more energy for more future laughter, pleasure, and happiness.

As can be seen from above when you choose to be happy; when you choose to laugh, you have less stress in your life.

You may not realise it, but the truth of the matter is that you have more power than you may know. The power to choose is a tool that is at everyone’s disposal all the time.

Ever since I took on the journey of personal development I have discovered that the power to chose lies squarely within my rights.

I have also learned to choose wisely and stick with my decisions. This is also something that I teach my children.

That they have the power to make their own choices and they should be responsible for the consequences of the choices they make.

Physical Exercising

One of the best ways to relieve stress is taking physical exercise. I have noticed that creating a regular routine of exercise not only gives me energy but also helps to unwind my mind. Exercising is also a source of motivation.

I normally go for my running routine early in the morning before I do anything. After the morning run, I have more than enough energy to see me through the day.

I encourage you to exercise regularly. Not only is exercising healthy for your body but also your mind and soul. You feel very refreshed after a workout. Your mind is more focused and your body is kept in optimum tune.

I believe that any form of exercise that suits you is good enough. Although it could be necessary that you consulted a physiotherapist if you have any underlying health conditions to help you devise a suitable routine for exercising.

Being Enthusiastic

Being enthusiastic means showing interest in the things that you do and getting pleasure from them. It means having an active and motivated attitude instead of a passive one. Keywords getting pleasure.

If you do not get pleasure from your daily work it might just mean that you are in the wrong field. Believe me, the main source of de-motivation is waking up every day and doing something that is not enjoyable. Hey, I have been there before.

I am one who is very much enthusiastic about what I do. Especially, writing articles for this blog. I find that am at peace and at home when I sit down to write.

I know that there are still a lot of areas that need to be improved, but I take pride in my work so far.

Being enthusiastic allows me to draw the much-needed energy to continue with my work. Enthusiasm is very key to taking responsibility for your attitude.

It is the burning desire that communicates commitment, determination, and spirit.

Enthusiasm is one of the most empowering and attractive characteristics you could ever have. Being enthusiastic speaks volumes about your attitude.

The Attitude of Positive Affirmations

“You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you” – Brian Tracy.

Affirmations are statements that reinforce positive thoughts and attitudes. Am sure you have noticed that on the right bar of this website there are some quotes. I also deliberately try as much as possible to include positive quotes in my articles.

I find that frequently reading or reciting positive quotes can help lift my mood and therefore, increase my attitude towards life in general.

There are many sources for finding positive affirmations. I have a book full of them. I also recommend the Bible.

Positive affirmations can help you re-focus your mind when you are feeling downtrodden. That is why it is important that before you begin your day read a verse from the Bible. The Bible is the greatest source of encouragement for me.

When you develop the habit of making positive affirmations you will realise that there is a quote for almost every situation and circumstance.

Pay close attention to what you are saying to yourself it could just change your attitude.

Conclusion

Taking responsibility for your attitude could just help you accelerate your personal development and self-improvement attributes. It is, therefore, important that you realise as an individual that you are solely responsible for your attitude.

You have the right and power to decide how you are going to react to a particular situation. Having control of your attitude can also enhance the quality of your life.

Responsibility is a Source of Happiness

Motivational Quotes

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

Happiness is not by chance, but by choice” – Jim Rohn. There is a very big relationship between taking more responsibility and being happy. These two thing are intertwined. The more responsible you are the more you enjoy happiness. Being responsible can be a source of great happiness. I have been doing a simple study on people who are seemingly enjoying happiness and have noticed that among the most common factors they share, is that they have taken up more responsibilities in their circles. These are the people who are in the driving seat of their lives.

Following up on this study I decided to take more responsibility, firstly with my own life. Yes, my own life. Most of us are not responsible for our own lives. We live under the shadows of other people. We only want to take responsibility when the right outcomes are achieved, sometimes even for the things that should not even be credited to us. I have seen this type of behaviour especially with our friends in the political world. There is a tendency of wanting to be praised for other peoples efforts.

But also amongst my peers. There is this tendency of only wanting to take credit when things are right, but we do not even want to take full responsibility when our actions are wrong. We always want to blame someone else or give excuses.

Taking Responsibility Puts You in the Drivers Seat

Look, when you take full responsibility for your life, you simply takeover the driving seat. You are in charge. You will accept when things are bad. Being in the driving seat is usually a source of happiness. It gives me joy when a plan comes together. You are happiest when things go according to your plan. If you are in charge you will quickly put up corrective measures when things are drifting away.  “Action may not bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action” – William James.

Taking up responsibility is also an indication of being a good leader. Remember, we are all leaders of our own lives and I believe that at some point you will be made to account for the actions you take in life. The quicker you realise it the better for you.

Personal growth and development is all about taking responsibility for all your actions and not just some. If you want to achieve serious self growth you need to start taking charge of your life. Do not let your mood be determined by other people, they may dampen it. This means taking control of your thoughts, as they are responsible for your emotions; taking control of your emotions as these may lead you to act on impulse. Usually, your predominant thoughts will dictate the state of your mood.

Make a Conscious Decision to be Responsible

The best time to consciously make decisions is in the morning. I have made it a point that every morning before my day gets hectic a decision is made that I will stay focused, be happy and responsible for my actions. Look, no one will make a decision for you unless you approve of it. If you live an unhappy life its your decision; if you are not in charge of your life its your decision. All in all the power to decide is within you. Learn to use it properly.

There is something about doing certain things early in the morning. Your mind just remains focused on them. I usually read through my writing ideas every night before sleeping and every morning when I wake up. Ever since I started this practice, my productivity levels have just been going up. How I wish this had started sometime back. Am writing and publishing articles on a regular basis.

I have taken full responsibility for my actions both positive and negative. On the days that I am not writing I take time to improve my writing skills by reading; researching, listening and watching motivational videos among other things. Yes, sometimes I have to force myself to do these things but I have made it a point that they are done. This is all, is a result of a single decision I make in the morning and that is to be responsible.

Sharing is Caring

They say sharing is caring. Some people find it had to share anything. If they have to share, it is those things that have no meaning and value to them. In other words they share what they call scraps. Well, I guess its human nature but I feel that it is wrong. I read somewhere that all habits are learnable good or bad. This is true. If you can learn bad habits you can also un learn them and replace them with good habits.

There is always something you can share. Sometimes people have lame excuses for not sharing. You will be amazed that the little you think you have some people do not have. I practice an open door policy and have taught my children to always learn to share. I know that sometimes its had, but we must share anyhow. Sharing does not necessarily mean giving out handouts in form of money, it could just be sharing your time to help out someone in need of your skills.

I know that if we all developed and practiced the habit of sharing, the world would be a much much better place. Sharing is also a source of happiness. Let me ask you a question. How do you feel when you see the joy on someone’s face all because you shared something with them? Exactly, that’s why you must share unconditionally more often. When you share do not expect anything back, you are not in control of them. If you expect anything in return more often than not you will be disappointed.

Conclusion

I would like to end by encouraging you to develop the habit of taking responsibility for your life, accept that you are the master of your destiny. Take charge and live a happy life. Learn to also take extra responsibilities and share your gifts with the world. “Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul” – Democritus. Standout tall and be happy.

Decide to Be Happy Everyday and Enjoy Your Life

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

There are two things to aim at in life: first to get what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind has achieved the second” – Logan Pearshall Smith. Everyday is a beautiful day that is filled with joy and happiness, but also everyday is a beautiful day that is filled with sadness. If every day is a gift why do you then decide to live a life of sadness. We live our lives based off, the decisions we made in the past. That is why it is better to make the right decisions today that will affect our future.

Am not perfect but everyday that I wake-up, I thank God almighty for giving me another opportunity to better my life. I believe that for as long as you are alive you have the chance of improving your life and that of the people around you and beyond.

Yes, I know you may not be in a position to do the things you want to do now, but you have the chance because you are alive. One thing I have noticed is that we as human beings take life for granted. We do not take time to appreciate the fact that we are alive and in pretty much good health. If you are reading this article you are even more privileged than most people. It simply means that you have access to a computer and the internet.

However, you are accessing them, these things cost money. Do you know how many people cannot even come close to think about having the privilege you have? Yet you continue living a life of sadness. I know that you may not have all you desire, but at least give thanks that you are alive. Life is not just about having all you desire but living happily and enjoying it.

Take Responsibility for Your Decisions

The biggest weakness we have as human beings is not taking full responsibility for our decisions. We only want to take responsibility when things are going right and people are praising us. I believe that taking responsibility for our mistakes is a sign of maturity. I am proud to take full responsibility for my personal decisions. Sometimes its difficult to accept that am in a certain situation because of my decisions but that’s just the truth. If I had made better choices I could not have found my self in difficult circumstances in the first place. Ever since I decided to be taking full responsibility for my decisions, life is more fulfilling and enjoyable. What this has done is that, before I make a major decision I think about it very hard.

I have also learnt that deciding to be happy early in the morning makes my day a lot easier to navigate. I know that sometimes people want to mess it up for me, but because a decision was made in the morning to be happy, I stick with it. My mind is pre-conditioned to stay happy and this flows to my emotions. They say our thoughts influence our emotions. When you decide on something and you stick with it, nothing can shake you. Yes things may be thrown at you, but you have the resolve to be happy and you will be, even during the bad and difficult times.

One of the things I do when am confronted with a potentially explosive situation is to just smile and walk away if I can or better still just keep quiet. Its hard to just walk away at first especially if you are hot tempered, but with practice it becomes easier.

There is no need to allow people to annoy you. Life is too short to be lived sad. God has given us the ability to choose freely. The power to decide is entirely in your hands. I like to make a comparison with say going out to have fun with friends. Most of the time when something goes wrong we blame the company we were hanging around with for the decisions we made. Yes they may have played a part but the final say, lies in our hands. If you say no to taking part in unwanted situation you can. This also goes to being in a toxic relationship. You can either decide to continue in it or you can get out.

Learn to Enjoy Your Life

Life is too short, learn to enjoy it. You can only enjoy life if you decide to and this decision is entirely yours. There are many ways to enjoying life, one of which is to do the things that make you happy more often. Most of us do not enjoy our lives simply because of the jobs we do. If your daily job does not make you happy you are most likely living a sad life.

The happiest people are those with jobs that make them happy. You can be paid as much money as possible but without happiness the job is meaningless. You would be probably contributing more if you found a job that makes you happy. Now, a job does not necessarily mean being employed by someone or working for a big corporation. You could be self employed and earning a decent living by doing the things that make you happy. “Be absolutely determined to enjoy what you do” – Gerry Sikorski.

That is why it very important to know your life’s purpose earlier in your life. This helps in choosing careers that will enhance and help you achieve your goals. One of the ways to know what your life’s purpose is, is to list down the things that easily flow from you. The things that you do with much ease and less effort. These are the things that could point you to what your life’s purpose is. It could be that you are gifted at making people laugh, well go ahead and be a professional comedian. The idea is start living and enjoy your working life. After all we spend most of our time working.

If you have made mistakes in the past like me, don’t worry, there is still room for change. You can make the change right now and decide to do the right things for the rest of your life. And besides who has never made a mistake in their life? Forget the mistakes you made, treat them as a learning point and move on. You cannot change the past but can positively influence your future beginning this moment by making the right decisions.

Conclusion

You don’t pay the price for success. You enjoy the price for success” – Zig Ziglar. I would like to conclude by advising you to made a decision to start living a happy life. Get your power back by taking responsibility for your decisions. We all fall down, but we get up and press on with life. Until next time have a blessed and happy life.

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

This is the final part of a two part series. If you missed out on part 1 please click here before you continue. In part one I talked about the first two qualities and these are vision and courage.

We learned that we are all born with these qualities and that the difference between leaders and followers is the expression of them to the world.

I also talked about the importance of vision and courage in leadership. In this issue I will write about integrity; realism and responsibility as the other qualities of leaders and motivators.

Integrity

“In the arena of human life the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action “~ Aristotle. My third quality is integrity.

I believe integrity underlines all other qualities. The measure of integrity is determined by how honest you are in your critical areas of your life. How honest do you handle other peoples finances for example.

Can someone trust you with their valuable possessions? Can you be trusted with handling say public matters even when it means that you will lose popularity in the short term?

Integrity means that you, as a leader, admit your shortcomings. It means that you work to develop your strengths and compensate for your weaknesses.

Integrity means that you tell the truth, and that you live the truth in everything that you do and in all your relationships. Integrity means that your dealings with people are straight forward and that you do not compromise on what you believe to be true.

In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” ~ Thomas Jefferson.

Realism

True realism consists in revealing the surprising things which habit keeps covered and prevents us from seeing” ~ Jean Cocteau. The fourth quality of motivational leadership is realism.

Realism is a form of intellectual honesty. The realist insists upon seeing the world as it really is, not as he wishes it were. This objectivity and refusal to engage in self-delusion, is a mark of the true leader.

A leader accepts situations as they are and transforms them to his advantage.

Those who exhibit the quality of realism do not trust to luck, hope for miracles, pray for exceptions to basic business principles, expect rewards without working or hope that problems will go away by themselves.

These all are examples of self-delusion, of living in a fantasy land. Yes I know that miracles do happen but not without you playing a part. The part you play and the amount of faith you have will definitely be a determining factor.

The motivational leader insists on seeing things exactly as they are and encourages others to look at life the same way.

As a motivational leader, you get the facts, whatever they are. You deal with people honestly and tell them exactly what you perceive to be the truth.

This doesn’t mean that you will always be right, but you will always be expressing the truth in the best way you know how. There by excising your integrity in the process.

Responsibility

It is said by Brian Tracy that “the happiest people in the world are those who feel absolutely terrific about themselves, and this is the natural outgrowth of accepting total responsibility for every part of their life.” This is the mark of a true leader.

The fifth of motivational leadership is responsibility. This is perhaps the hardest to develop.

It is the duty of a good leader to take and accept responsibility no matter what the outcome is. In the same manner as when the outcome is positive he takes all the parting on the back. He should take the brunt when things have failed.

If, instead of accepting responsibility when things go wrong, you make excuses, blame someone else and simultaneously become angry and resentful and blow up, this may cost you.

Personal leadership and motivational leadership are very much the same. To lead others, you must first lead yourself. To be an example or a role model for others, you must first become an excellent person yourself.

There is no dodging responsibility. Know also that you are responsible for your own life. Your very own life is in your hands.

You are responsible for your actions. Wrong or right, good or bad they are your actions. If you want to become more, more of you is expected.

Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” ~ Tony Robins

Conclusion

Finally, take action. You know that all mental preparation and character building is merely a prelude to action. You become a motivational leader by motivating yourself.

Motivate yourself by striving towards excellence, by committing yourself to becoming everything you are capable of becoming.

You motivate yourself and others by continually looking for ways to help others improve their lives and achieve their goals; you become a motivational leader by becoming the kind of person others want to get behind and support in every way.

Remember that we all have the five qualities in us wake them up and see how far you can go. “Standout tall and be counted”. Revised on 01/06/2021.

You are what you choose

Your current life is a total summation of the choices you have made in life. The choices you make in life are a direct reflection of the life you are leading today. Albert Camus said “life is the sum of all your choices“. We continuously choose our way of life everyday, breath by breath and choice by choice. I have come to appreciate that the way I lead my life is my own choice. Everyday I choose what to wear; eat; whether to be happy or sad etc. It is all entirely up to me to choose. No one will come and make a choice for me they can only offer suggestions. Some people may have influence on the choices I make but, ultimately the choices are  made by me. They are mine and not someone else s’.

Choose wisely

Since our lives is a summation of our choices it is very imperative that we make wise choices. A well lived life is not an accident. Some of the challenges we will face in the future are unprecedented therefore, we must be prepared to make good choices. We will not always make wise choices and will have to live with the consequences as a result. But the good thing is that we have the ability and power  to change them under new circumstances and new knowledge. You must learn to make choices while remaining flexible to change. This does not mean you must have a mind weak mind. Make sure that before you decide you are convinced that the choice you have made is the best one available.

In life every situation presents us with a good alternative choice to take. I know that some situations may be very difficult and precarious but there is always a better choice to make. You may not have all the information to make a good decision but I believe that decisions have to be made good or bad. I call indecision is a disease. Failure to make decisions stagnates us. We remain at the same place while we watch our friends progress. Indecision is what has stopped most people from achieving their intended purpose’s in life.

Take responsibility

We do not generally suffer from others; we suffer from ourselves. I have shown you the way to liberation, now you must take it for yourself” – The Buddha. Well said by the Buddha. Most of the people I know do not want to take responsibility when some thing they are in charge of goes wrong. When it is time to be praised they take full responsibility this is a typical human nature. You see we are responsible for our lives period. We are responsible for what we think, eat, drink, dress etc. We are responsible for our success and failure. Until you understand and take responsibility for your current situation you will never improve it. Taking responsibility is key to improving our well being. When choices are made they are made by us. We therefore, have a huge responsibility to enforce our choices. Remember they are ours made by us.

I have come to appreciate taking responsibility for every situation I find my self. I find it very helpful when I take responsibility for the situation and most of the time I see the situation improve or completely disappear. I do not blame my self or anyone for it whether good or bad I just take responsibility for it. Yes sometimes am tempted to put the blame on someone but I have learned to tune my mind to take responsibility for every situation I encounter in life.

You may ask that why should we take responsibility for the choices we make? The reason is simple you want to be associated with them because they are yours. When you succeed at something are you not proud of it? Yes you are happy of it because you associated your self with the success. The more reason why you must take responsibility even for the failed choices so as to make better choices in future.

Conclusion

We live a life of choices. Everyday poses a great challenge to our lives. You should learn to prepare your self for the next decision to be made when you are faced with a difficult one. The choices we make shape what we expect to be in the future. Search your self deeper when confronted with a difficult situation that needs you to make a wise choice. Always make choices that best suite your life and preserve your integrity. Choose wisely for your life depends on the choices you make. Remember to “standout tall and be counted” for all the choices you make.
