Your values make the person you are

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

Life is lived from the inside out. At the very core of your personality are your values. What you become or what you are, is largely dictated by the values that you hold strong. If your values are love, kindness, honesty, positivity and sincerity that is what will often be shown in your life. Our outward life is merely a reflection of our inner core values. The Bible says “you shall know them by their fruits”. Our values are our fruits. We all live life by our values, be it wrong or right and sometimes knowingly or unknowingly. Human beings are mostly directed by the values they hold. We are daily displaying what we value by the way we live our lives. The life you are living today is a direct reflection of your inner values. Notice that most successful people have a positive outlook about themselves. They harbour positive values within their inner being.

It is, therefore, very important that if we are to succeed at whatever we are doing we must learn to feed our minds and inner souls with the right material. If you feed on negative emotions you are most likely going to produce negative emotions and the opposite is equally true. In short, your character is a sum total of what you feed on. The good thing with our mind is that it can be transformed. If you want a transformation of your mind, feed it with the right material. The bible says “you shall be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. The only way I know of renewing your mind is by reading and learning. Look, whatever you read sticks in your mind and someday it will come out. If you read wrong books your mind will be transformed by them. One of the books I read on a daily basis is the Bible. It is full of positive affirmations. The Bible is actually my life’s guide.

You have to make a deliberate policy and have the will to change. Our daily actions are controlled, consciously or unconsciously by our thoughts. You may not have noticed it but believe me, your thinking has a direct bearing on your character and general behaviour. What you hold dear to your heart will always manifest. I always like to give the example of thieves, do you realise that no one is born a thief. People just learn to thieve and since it can be learned it can also be unlearned. Nature provides us all with equal opportunities. For example, we all have 24hrs a day, 12 months a year. The biggest difference is the way we seize the opportunities that come our way. Sometimes opportunities can be disguised as a “disaster” say, loss of employment. Most of the times when one loses employment they moan and groan about it without realising that it could be an opportunity that has just presented itself to be self-employed or even look for better employment.

Improve your values

Like I said before our values can be learned and unlearned. The question is how can we unlearn the bad values that have accumulated over a period of time. Over the past months, I have been focussing on changing some of my values by reading, listening and watching motivational materials and attending personal transformation seminars. This has seen me change my internal values tremendously. To this day some of the things I thought of being valuable are actually of negative value. When you change your values and focus on building positive ones it gives you a sense of purpose and you feel in control of your life. Most of us are not in full control of our lives and hence just flow with the wind. Hence the frustration with life.

A positive mindset has the ability to create a sense of responsibility and enables you to enjoy your life much much better. You have less pressure and you do not panic when things go wrong. Believe me, things will always go wrong and sometimes very messy. The most important thing is the way you react to them. Do you let the situation overtake you or do you take control of the situation? Most of the things that go wrong are actually within our control. I believe that everything that happens to us, happens for a reason and mostly it is just an opportunity for us to provide a solution differently. However, this entails thinking outside the box. In fact, removing the box altogether. I always like to think of life as a journey. When faced with a challenge do I go back or face the challenge head-on. I focus on facing the challenge head-on. There is always a solution to every challenge that comes your way. Remember that God always makes a way where they seem to be no way. The Bible says “seek ye first the kingdom of God and everything shall be added on to you”. The bible also says that “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you”. It is, therefore, very important to have a prayerful life if you have to be successful. Prayer and meditation on the word of God open doors.

Your values are the key components in determining your character. As human beings, our lives portray our core values. Take stock of your life and see what you value most. The best way is to write down what you think your values are. Now compare that with the way you carry on with your daily life. If your values are love, honesty and sincerity this will tend to be exactly how you treat other people. You will always treat people with love and sincerity. I have also noticed that we make opinions about people based on our own characters and past behaviour.  Just take time to observe your life and you will surely agree with me that what you value most will definitely be primary in your daily life.

Clarify your values

One of the characteristics of good leaders is that they have clarity of their values. Remember that we are all leaders of some sort. You may not be in a leadership position but you are the leader of “yourself corporation limited”. The more you get to know what your values are with clarity the better person you become and the more happiness you experience. Many of us have values that are not clear. If you want to succeed at what you are doing it is very important that you write down a clear set of values that you believe in. These values should actually be engraved and be identified with your belief system. This is also true that most successful corporations have a set of values they adhere to.

Your belief system is also key in determining your values. Remember that our belief system can also be learned or unlearned. Our beliefs are mainly deduced as a result of our past experiences and what we have read and seen. Some experiences can be directly linked to us as individuals or can be someone we have seen or read about. To be successful and develop a positive mental attitude there is need to have clarity in your values and belief system. Personal development and self-growth is not a destination but a journey. We are all on the journey of life, however, the difference is how we are enjoying this journey.

Enjoy your life

There is much joy in doing the right things. I have heard that if you are feeling low and want to experience happiness try giving a helping hand to someone else. You will definitely be filled with joy when you see the glow of happiness in the other person.  I believe that humanity was created to help each other. We are the solution to many people around us. If you look around you will realise that there are many people who are worse than you. The onus is on you to make the best out of the current situation. Stop complaining and blaming people for your current situation. Especially if you are over the age of 18, you have full responsibility for your life. Learn to enjoy life by doing that which God created you for. You have the ability and capacity to improve yourself no matter how bad the situation may look like.

Life was meant to be enjoyed. I have learned that for as long as someone has the breath of life in them they are not to be written off. Never ever look down upon anyone in life no matter what their current situation is, instead try and help them where possible. They say as you climb the ladder upwards ensure that you look after those you leave downwards as they will be able to catch you when a calamity falls on you. No offense but I have noticed that those people occupying higher authority, have a tendency of thinking that they do not need anybody whose below them.  I believe that life is a vicious circle. You never know when someone will come and give you a helping hand simply because you helped them at some point in life. You may not be the direct beneficiary of that help but it could be your children or indeed someone close to you. Some of the favours I have personally received are a result of my late father’s goodwill. People have told me that we have done this for you not because you deserve it but out of appreciation of your late fathers’ good standing with us.

Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals and values are in balance” – Brian Tracy. One of the key areas of personal development and success is knowing what your value set are. Your values form an important aspect of your character. It is your character and will that eventually drives you to your life’s goals. I encourage you to set goals for your life and just be a student of your self. Know yourself as much as possible and take action to correct the areas of your life that you think need correction. Lastly, if this site is an encouragement to you, please feel free to share it. Bye for now and remember to always “standout tall and counted”.

Goals and goal setting

“Failure is blindness to the strategic element in events; success is readiness for instant action when the opportune moment arrives.”  – Newell D. Hillis.

In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia.” ~ Unknown. Goal setting is the one activity that sets apart achievers from those who are surviving or just getting by. By goal setting we are enabled to create the future we want to happen rather than live the future that others want to happen. Goal setting enables us to take greater charge of our daily lives.

In this article I outline some of the ways to help set reachable goals.

You can base your goals on anything you want, although the chances of your success are significantly increased if firstly you base them on your strengths and secondly on your opportunities in the field your are currently under taking. It is very important to know your strengths and weakness before undertaking any goal setting venture as this will help you decide what naturally flows from within you.

Do some self research such as a personal SWOT, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. When conducting a personal research note the following:-

  • Your strengths are the things you are good at and enjoy doing. Using your strengths for goal setting will usually provide some sort of motivation as you go on.
  • Weaknesses are the things you have to do, but these are things you dislike or make slow progress at them.
  • Opportunities are the external circumstances you expect to arise, create or already exist and expect them to aid you moving towards your set goals.
  • Threats are those external circumstances that are very unlikely to help you move forward and would probably set you backwards.

Whilst we must keep on working to improve our weaknesses and keep a close eye on the threats it is very important that our goal setting should be based on our strengths and opportunities.

Keep your dreams alive

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt. The greatest achievement was, at first, and for a time, but a dream. You must realize that all who have achieved great success first did a certain amount of dreaming, hoping, wishing, DESIRING, and PLANNING before they succeeded.  You may as well know, also that every great leader, from the dawn of civilization down to the present, was and is, a dreamer. One of the factors that restrict many people from reaching their full potential is the belief that we should not aim for big dreams. Yet all evidence for most successful people is that they have kept their big dreams alive and have fully pursued them without giving up. It is very important to keep your dreams alive and to pursue them without giving up.

I have learnt to break down my dreams into smaller achievable goals and to always make changes that improve my chances of achieving them. Remember that big dreams come with greater responsibility and that “big goals attract big resources like a magnet”. Having dreams makes my life more interest to live. Yes sometimes days do not turn out as planned but what is life without challenges? I do not give up just because the day has not turned out as hoped for, but rather I focus on the positive things that come my way.

Abraham Lincoln dreamed of freedom for the black slaves, he kept his dream alive and put it into action, and barely missed living to see a united North and South translate his dream into reality. That is how important it is to keep your dreams alive and acting on them.

Write down your goals

The best way to keep your dreams alive is to write them down and read them every often to constantly remind you of the bigger picture. There is something different when you write down your dreams as opposed to just keeping them in your head. DO NOT depend on your memory alone. I have a note book that has all the dreams intend to achieve; this is like the blue print of my life. Written goals have a way of transforming wishes into wants, can’ts into cans, dreams into plans and plans into reality.

The act of writing clarifies your goals and helps you keep a record of your dreams and goals. Writing down your dreams acts as a commitment to your goals. This will eventually aid you when you are doing your daily goal setting activities as these will be tailored to the overall bigger picture. You can also add reasons to your written down goals so as to give you motivation and help check your progress on a regular basis. So don’t just think it INK IT. One of the best aid I have discovered is the habit of daily goal setting.

Pursuing your goals with passion and desire

The driving force behind your goal achievement is your passion and desire. You must desire your goals constantly, vividly and with a burning passion, knowing that you have already achieved them and are now working towards realising them. When you do, it is almost impossibly to fail at what you are aiming for. The importance of pursuing our goals with passion cannot be over emphasised that is, why it is most wise and very cardinal that we set our goals based on our strengths and what we enjoy doing. Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich says that “when a man really DESIRES a thing so deeply that he is willing to stake his entire future on a single turn of the wheel in order to get it, he is sure to win”.

Goal setting is central to maximising and realising our potential because it enables us create something unique and new in our lives it also allows us to feed our goal oriented brain and puts us in control of our future. Set your goals as big as you can this will help challenge and stretch your capacity and ability. There are many ways that can be use to help with goal setting the above are just but some of the ways I have personally devised to help me in my endeavours. Remember to also build your goals around your strengths and the things that you enjoy doing. “standout tall and be counted”.

Personal Development Self Growth

Stay focused on your goals

Setting goals and targets is the easy part of personal development and self growth. One of the most difficult things to do in life is to remain focused on our set goals. This usually determines our levels of success. I always set my self targets and goals on a monthly basis but, I must mention that not until recently did I discover the formula for staying focused. It is pointless in life to set targets that we do not intend to achieve neither is it beneficial to us, it is a share waste of time and effort. Remember effort is energy use your energy wisely. A tip when setting targets is that you must make sure that you set targets that are realistic and achievable.

Why set targets?

You may ask why set targets? They help us achieve our desired dreams and goals. Life is growth and growth is change. For one to have meaningful growth one needs a properly planned and executed plan. I believe that targets are the guiding maps towards the attainment of our intended purpose’s in life. I use my targets as a measure towards the achievement of my intended goal see related article. I will be very honest with you that not all targets I have set have been realistic and achievable, but over the years I have learnt to give my self targets and goals that are actually realistic and achievable. I still have though, some targets that I have been carrying over for sometime and are yet to be attained.

Setting targets helps me gauge the level and speed at which I am moving towards the attainment of my desired goals. But remember that Personal Development is not a competition. Never compete with anyone in your quest for personal growth.

Stick to your plan

Setting targets is the easier part of personal growth, staying focused and sticking to them is the hard part. Once you have set out your intended purpose in life start working towards it. Do not wait until you have a clear picture cause it will never be clear until you start working on it. The more you work your plan the clearer it becomes. You will be encouraged to stick to your plans as you set realistic and achievable targets. It really feels good when you set your self a target and have achieved it. Yes there will be some conditions that we will encounter that are negative to us but always remember that all conditions and experiences that come to us are for out benefit. We gain strength in proportion to the effort expended.

Encourage yourself every time you drift away from your plan by reminding yourself that to live is not a blessing but to live well. “An unexplained life is not worth living” just “as an unplanned life is not worth examining”. I believe that unless we have a plan for our lives, we don’t know what we are trying to achieve. There is great reward in planning our lives and sticking to our plans.

You are unique. You ought to do what no one can do. Your destiny is not predetermined. You create your own destiny every day, not by chance but by choice. Destiny is an achievement. Yes you come across bad situations, just know that there is always good even in bad situations. We can train our selves to see good and to do good in the darkest moments of our lives.

While some people just want to get by, you must choose to thrive. You must have an understanding of contentment and happiness in order to achieve inner peace. Staying focused on your goals will ensure that you live a happy life. This is because you will be doing what you enjoy most in your life. A well lived life is not an accident. It is hard work. Be honest with yourself and know the difference between your needs and your wants. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.
