How to keep peace with your adversaries

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him “ – Buddha. We all have adversaries in life. Countries are at war because of perceived enemies; people are fighting and killing each other because of perceived differences and creating adversaries. Peace seems to be in short supply across the world. Even in our own homes husbands and wives cannot stay together peacefully. Especially during the current imposed lock down due to the COVID – 19 pandemic.

The world we know to day is not as it was a few years ago. There seems to be a break down of peace in the world today. It seems to me that when you belong to a different grouping or race you are enemies. And for some of us who live in countries that have enjoyed relative peace for a very long time we seem to be taking it for granted. We seem to have forgotten that the peace we enjoy today was fought for by our fore fathers. I have been doing some reading and researching on how we can learn to maintain peace with our perceived enemies. Key word perceived.

I came to a conclusion that most of the reasons for the enmity around us is purely greediness, ignorance and fear of the unknown. Most of us are scared of what we don’t know or understand. You see fear exposes our weaknesses and we counter it by being angry and hateful. It makes us want to eliminate that which makes us angry and in the process we loss our peace.

I came across a very interesting story by Daryl Davis. He is one of the very few black men who used to attend rallies of the Ku Klux Klan popularly known as the KKK. Daryl had become friends with the Grand Dragon of the Klan and over time he would be invited to attend their rallies. At the rallies he was even allowed to take pictures. Now if you know what the KKK stood for, you will agree with me that this was an extraordinary friendship. Even though the leader of the Klan insisted that he was superior to Daryl justified by the differences in their skin colour.

In his story Daryl stresses that ignorance breeds fear. For sure we are as human beings are always fearful of the things we do not understand. I have experienced fear without actually knowing what the fear is all about. I believe this is just a defense mechanism we have developed overtime. If only we could take more time to understand our adversaries. We would be making the right decisions and learn to live in peace. It is amazing how we hate people we do not even know based on the colour of their skin or tribe or political grouping. Yet most of us profess to be Christians. The bible I read tells me that “Do onto others what you would want them do onto you” it also tells me that “we are all equal before the eyes of God”. Find here below Daryl Davis telling his story.

Daryl Davis speaking about his experience with the Ku Klux Klan

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other” – Mother Teresa. Perhaps we need to be reminded that we are all interconnected and belong to each other. If we can spend time to respect and accept each others uniqueness the world would be a better and peaceful place for all. After all God instructs us to love our enemies as we love ourselves. Remember to standout tall and be counted and keep the conversation going with your adversaries.

Get set, ready, steady go. The challenge starts today. The die is cast. There is no turning back. This is the beginning of the month-long article posting challenge. In my previous post, I made a public declaration and challenged myself to a daily article posting challenge for the month of February. Well, the month is right upon us. This is the first post for the challenge. At the end of this month, we should have a minimum of 29 articles of good value. The month has already started with challenges for me and I need to quickly learn how to navigate through them without disturbing my 29 Days challenge. I know that I will face a lot of them, but what will determine my success are the learning points that I will take from them.

I am not looking back but pressing ahead and see how far this challenge will take me. The beauty of it is that at the end of February  I will have moved a step closer to achieving my objective of improving my writing skills and contributing to humanity. I believe that when something is written it is indelible. Usually, we write what we believe in or what we want to say. Most of the time we convey our feelings and thoughts through writing.  The major difference between speaking and writing is the ease of reference. It is much easier to refer to written speeches. Written messages are never forgotten. Today we continue to make reference to the many quotes because they were written down.

Here are some of the key objectives of the 29 Day Challenge.

Increase content on the site

Increasing site content is a no brainer. Remember that I pledged to increase content on this site. The more articles that are posted on any site will, of course, add to the existing site content and hence increase the overall content. This is a basic SEO rule. The search engines love new content. This has the potential to greatly improve the site rankings by the search engines and therefore, increase search engine traffic to the website.

I believe that search engine traffic is the best because users reach your site through what they are searching for. They are more specific. Increased traffic means increased visibility and access to a wider audience. My hope is to reach as many people as possible. Through this am hoping to get more referral links pointing to this site. More backlinks mean more improved search engine rankings. This can only be good news for me.

Improve visitor satisfaction

Visitor satisfaction will come with the quality of the content being generated. Although visitor satisfaction will not only depend on content quality, there are many other factors that will ensure it is achieved. Some of them may beyond my control. However, I will endeavour to change those things that are within my power. I am also very much aware that you cannot please every visitor. But, I will try as much as possible to make the site user-friendly and work with more reliable and faster hosting service providers.

Improve my writing skills

They say practice makes perfect. I believe that even before I undertake this challenge, my writing skills are improving with every article I write. I can only assume that there will be a great improvement at the end of the challenge. I know that there is a lot of room for improving my writing skills. I can assure you that am constantly working to improving them on a regular basis. The better and more easily my articles are the more user satisfaction is generated.

Improve writing inspiration

Those of my friends who are artists and bloggers will understand what am saying when I say that you need the inspiration to write. It is not easy to just wake up and start writing. You need to have some kind of inspiration to put your thoughts on paper and worse still put them in a meaningful way. A musician always needs the inspiration to write and sing songs. The inspiration may come through real-life experiences and many other sources. One of the most killers of not putting down our thoughts is differing them to another time. I have learned over the years that when you feel inspired to write, don’t postpone to a later time, your thoughts will have disappeared by then. Just sit down and get going with it. Your thoughts will flow on paper. Usually, the idea is not even as clear at the beginning but as you delve into it you simply flow with it.

As we undertake this journey together I also challenge you to do something you have never done before. It could be exercising on a daily basis for a period of time. You could also challenge yourself to get rid of an old bad habit. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it adds more value to yourself and the world at large. I believe that we will be made to account for how we spend our time on this earth.

The key to happiness is having dreams. The key to success is making your dreams come true. We all have dreams, but life can be a discouragement. Life has a way of pushing our dreams backward. We all have gone through a rough patch in our lives and this may have resulted in burying our dreams. There are various reasons why our dreams are buried.  Some dreams are buried under bad health; some are buried under divorce and still, most people are buried with their dreams. Dr. Myles Monroe says the richest place on earth is the cemetery. This is were you find songs that have never been sung; books that have never been written; paintings that have never been painted; businesses that have never been actualised; the buildings that have never been built and many other dreams that will never be actualised.

Even though your dreams have been buried, for as long as you still have the breath of life they are still alive, I believe that God has not forgotten about them. Your dreams may be buried but they are not dead.

I know that most of us are discouraged when we are met with adversity. But do you realise that obstacles are part of the bigger picture to help you achieve your dreams? The adversities are diversities to actualise our dreams. The many obstacles that we go through are part of the journey to achieving your dreams. There is no success without overcoming obstacles. They say success is measured by the many obstacles that you overcome. The fact that you have dreams does not necessarily mean that they will be achieved without hard work and persistence. Yes, it’s very important and necessary to have dreams but it does not guarantee that you will not come across challenges. Life is full of challenges and I believe that these are meant to prepare us for a better future.

I want to let you know that it is never too late to realise your dreams. It does not matter how old you are if you awaken the dreams that God put on your heart you will achieve them. The bible says “I will restore the years that the locust has eaten”. God has a way of giving us back our lost time. Do not die with your dreams, but God to help you share your dreams with the world. When God created you, he put in you all the gifts and talents needed to over any adversity and obstacles that you may encounter on your way to realising your goals. He put in you the ability to change adversity into diversity; the ability to overcome obstacles.

Write down your dreams

We must keep a hard copy of our dreams. Most successful people have written down their dreams. Read goals and goal setting for more details. There is a saying that when you write down your dreams when people read them, they will most likely follow them and this will eventually help you realise them even more quickly. Writing down our dreams also acts as a constant reminder to us. Every so often it is important to refer back to them and constantly remind our selves of what we want to achieve. Believe me, it is not easy to commit to something we have not written down. Regularly review your progress and make improvements. This can only be achieved if you have written them down.

I have developed a habit of writing down what I want to achieve. Every year I make resolutions and set out goals to be achieved. I make sure that they conform to the bigger picture of what my life’s intended purpose is. Life is becoming more bearable for me as each day I focus on what I want to achieve. Yes, sometimes I find my self fire fighting. But I always try as much as possible to learn from them. Sometimes we may feel that there are too many setbacks, but do you realise that those same “setbacks” are setups to achieving our dreams? They propel you see beyond the current situation. In every bad circumstance, there is always something positive. We may not understand it but I think God does not let us go through the storm alone. He always provides a way where there seems to be no way.

God is always with us and he is always providing guidance. The currents that determine our dreams and shape our lives, flow from the attitudes that we nurture every day.

Speak life to every dead situation

There is power in your tongue. What you say usually comes to pass. Remember that even during creation the bibles tells us in Genesis that every time God spoke: “it came to be”. For example on the first day of creation God said “let there be light” and here we are today, we have light throughout the day. All through creation we are told God said whatever he wanted to see and that is what came out and was created. To me, this demonstrates the power that the tongue holds. We are in our current situations mostly because of what we hold as thoughts and what we have said in the past. In other words, we have created our situation knowingly or unknowingly.

If you go about complaining how hard the economy is and how things are not working out for you that, is exactly what will come to pass in your life. Have you noticed that when economists predict a rise in inflation or commodity prices that is exactly what happens around the world? And the opposite is also true. This is equally true even with us on an individual level. When we speak positively about our life things begin to change. It is therefore important that you learn to always speak positive words of encouragement when faced with negative situations. One source of encouragement is the bible. God has promised us so many good things even when we are faced with adversities.

If you are sick, begin to claim your healing because the bible promises us good health and long life. “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation” – the Bible. It may take time but every time you speak healing to your body you unbury your dreams of being healthy again. Begin to see yourself walking and living your dreams because God promised it. Speak positive affirmations to all negative situations in your life. Yes, you may be struggling financially but remember that God promised that he shall supply all your needs. Not some but all of them.

Trust in God

Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name” – the Bible. At the end of the day, we are all created by God in His image and likeness. It’s like when we buy an appliance, the first thing we do is read the users manual and understand how the new appliance works and what limitations it has. The mere fact that we take time to read what the manufacturers manual says, we are placing our trust in the manufacturer because of us the creator of that appliance.

We are acknowledging that the manufacturer knows the appliance better than us and gives us instructions on how to use it. I think its the same with us as human beings. If we live trusting God he surely does not let us down. Yes sometimes things may not go as we want them, but God Almighty knows what’s best for us. All things work out for the better if we put our trust in God.

Over the years I have learned to trust God. There are times when I feel that he is far away from me but my plans are not his. I know that for sure that he has much much better plans for my life than I can imagine. I live my life according to his plans.  The fact that am still alive is testimony enough that God cares about me. You may not realise it but we all have many things to thank God for. If its wealth I believe that this world has more than enough to round for all the 6 billion + inhabitants. Most of the times we find our selves on the wrong end because we ignore what God is telling us and usually this is done out of selfish motives.

There is a time I learned the hard way. I was trying to grow some tomatoes on a large scale for sale. God had clearly told me to do my seedlings, this would have meant that I plant the seeds and wait for at least a month before transplanting them, but instead, I decided to go and buy the seedlings. They started very well and I thought you see I could have wasted time. My my my I lost everything after putting in so much effort and wasting money on fertilisers and chemicals. By the time I decided to do what God had earlier told me it was late and the rains were upon us. I guess God was trying to guide me to work within his plans.

We should show our lives not as it is or how it ought to be, but only as we see it in our dreams” – Count Leo Tolstoy. I believe that every reasonable human being has a dream, in fact, many dreams. The difference between successful people and average people is that successful people have kept their dreams alive and are seriously perusing them. If you are reading this article I know that you have dreams, it is my prayer and hope that you will ask God to not allow you go to the grave without realising your dreams. I also hope and trust that you have found this article useful and has helped stir up your long-buried dreams. Have a blessed day and go and realise your dreams always remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

We all have formed an image of our self in one way or another. I have been doing a personal study of my performance in relation to my personal image. The discovery has been phenomenon. I have discovered that the way I view my self has a direct relationship with my task performance and my general life output. I believe that this is true for most of us. We live our lives based on our self-image. We form our self-image based on many factors especially external ones. If your self-image is that of a failure or of a loser, believe me, you are most likely living a failed or losing life. However, the opposite is also true. When am carrying out a task and my personal thoughts are negative the results are also not very encouraging. I have sometimes spent hours and hours on articles only to realise that I have not done a good job and this is mostly because I had a negative feeling about the subject. These articles never find their way on my website.

It is, therefore, important that you create a positive self-image if you have to improve your performance.  Having a positive self-image is one of the key factors for enhancing your personal growth. A positive self-image will accelerate your performance levels and speed up your goal attainment process. I know that there are times when you just feel negative about something, it is absolutely okay to feel that way. The key thing is how quickly you turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. I have written enough articles on this website that sometimes when I feel demotivated I start going through some of them and boom my mind is filled with positive thoughts. I have also gotten inspiration for writing even more articles just from reading motivational books. I am not blowing my own trumpet but just merely stressing the point of reading motivational articles.

If you have always had negative thoughts about yourself I encourage you to read the bible for inspiration. There are many books out there but, the bible is the book of life. It is your manual for life. You will begin to see how precious you are in the eyes of God. Failure is mostly associated with our negative self-image. You have the capacity to change and shape your destiny if only you can change your personal image. Change begins with you. If you want to improve your performance and live the life you have always wanted, you must make the mental change to believe that you are the best at what you do and begin to take action. You are responsible for your life and should learn to take full responsibility for your actions and current situation. If you are an adult you should not expect a bailout. Just take responsibility and begin to act on making things better for your self. “The moment of enlightenment is when a person’s dreams of possibilities become images of probabilities” – Vic Bruden.

How do you change your self-image?

This is perhaps the starting point to your personal growth. You, alone are responsible for creating your self-image. It’s like in a marriage, what you tell your relatives and friends about your spouse is what they will know about her.  If you disrespect her, believe me, they will also. What you call your spouse in public is what they will call her. So if you want people to respect her you will always endeavour to tell them positive things about her. Those of you who are married must take this advice seriously. You will respect her in public regardless of the differences you had at home. It’s those that do not value their marriages who will talk negatively about their spouses in public. Yes, every marriage has its own unique problems and we do not want to bring them out in public.

The same is true with how you view and portray yourself to people. The more positive and confident you show people the more positive and confident people will see you. But this begins with yourself seeing the many positive things and qualities you possess. Take a sheet of paper and just write out 20 things that you think you are. You will be amazed at what you will write down. Yes, we fail but that does not mean we should not try again. The most successful people fail many times before they succeed. The less successful people give up once they encounter a challenge. Failure to me is merely an obstacle to be overcome. Life would be very boring without challenges. Many of the times when we encounter challenges it simply means that there is an opportunity to develop a solution for the challenge.

If you keep trying and trying things differently you will surely succeed at what you are doing. Fill your mind with positive self-images about your self and sooner than later your mind will change the way you look at your self. Create a deliberate habit of saying “I like my self” repeatedly every time you feel low emotionally. When you wake up in the morning ask God to help you focus on the positive things in life. Refuse the spirit of negativity and put on the image of positive thinking. Believe that you can complete a task with better results and make time to develop your skillset. Have an open mind to learning new things. Always see failure as a challenge and refuse to accept it. Surely changing your self-image will make you feel much much happier and definitely help to improve your performance. When you feel good about yourself you will perform much much better. After all, what you want most in life is the feeling of happiness.

know that you will come across people that will say unpleasant things about you. But you have the ultimate control to either accept or reject them. And besides, we all have skeletons in our closets. No one on this earth can claim to be pure. It is also beneficial to hang around people that have a positive image about you as this helps to keep you motivated. When you create a positive image about your yourself, somehow it flows from you and attracts the right people. Make a deliberate policy to evaluate your friends some of them may not be very beneficial to your personal growth.

Maintain the discipline of doing what is right

You know, there is a good feeling when you do something that is right. The feeling is just awesome. I would not be wrong to say that we all possess the ability to do the right thing. There is just something nice when we feel that, what we have done is good. All well-meaning people have a conscious that tells us about what we are doing. I usually go with my first thoughts or rather my instincts. If am doing a task that am not sure of its effect on society, mostly I back out unless am convinced otherwise. This is not to say that I have never done the wrong things before. Believe me, I have but, I have learned to take responsibility and help to correct them if I can. I am not ashamed to go back and say am sorry let me correct my wrongdoing. I have developed the discipline of doing what I think and feel is right especially for my success.

Self-discipline is one of the most difficult traits, but an important one for personal development and growth. We keep fighting every day to do the right things. Our minds are always telling us to do the easier things in life than do the most difficult and important things first. Like delayed gratification, we always want to spend money rather than save for the future. I will be honest, I also struggle on a daily basis to do the easy things and forget the difficult and necessary tasks. But tell you what, every time I conquer this edge, there is a feeling of joy and satisfaction.

Developing the discipline of doing the right things first is a good attribute to helping in improving your performance. Doing the right things always makes you feel motivated and proud of yourself. Society lucks men and women who can stand up to do the right things even in the advent of criticism. It seems to me that many of us have fallen prey to doing what is popular or trending for fear of being called bad names. We would rather be on the same side with the majority even when we know deep down our hearts that what we have done is wrong.

Believe in your self” – Unknown. The essence of personal self-image is very critical to personal growth as it is the centre of your performance attribute. We should try as much as possible to create a positive self-image if we have to enjoy our lives. Most of the people who have a negative self-image are low performers. If you are in a leadership position take a closer look at your subordinates performance reports, you will realise that one of the major factors of low performers is as a result of a negative self-image. The higher performers are more usually confident and have a positive self-image. You should consider helping those that are low performers as this will inadvertently reflect on your leadership skills and enhance your performance as a team. I hope you have found this article useful and thank most sincerely for reading up to the end. Good luck and “standout tall and be counted”.

This is the second article of a two part series on 8 ways to help maximise your potential. A quick reminder of the definition of the world potential according to the oxford dictionary “potential is having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future“.  Personal development and growth is a vehicle that you can use to help maximise your potential. We are all built with potential, that is waiting to be unleashed and maximised. “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential.. .these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence” – Eddie Robinson. Lets get straight into it and see what the remaining 4 ways are:-

Know yourself

You will be amazed to learn that many of us do not know ourselves very well. It may sound absurd that am talking about knowing yourself but it is very important that you know yourself and have total control of your being. I believe that self knowledge is the starting point of maximising your potential. It gives us an insight into understanding our capabilities. Knowing your self will help you understand where your natural strengths lie and how well you can combine them to take advantage of the prevailing opportunities.

Donald O. Clifton and Paula Nelson in “play to your strengths” outline five different ways in which we can discover our strengths as outlined below:-

  • Listen for yearnings – normally our yearnings are often triggered when we hear or see someone doing something we would like to do or feel we can do it better. You will agree with me that there is something you are yearning to do but do not realise it because you have not paid attention to your self.
  • Watch out for satisfactions – what really satisfies you? When you get a glow of satisfaction from doing something (work related off course) even though we may not understand why, this is most likely one of your strengths.
  • Watch out for rapid learning – a strength is usually characterised by rapid learning. Am very sure that you do have things that you learn more easily than others. This will usually continue for a longtime if not a life time.
  • Be aware of moments of excellence – position your mind to be alert to your moments of excellence. I believe that each and everyone of us has had a moment of excellence in their lives.
  • Watch for total performance of excellence.

Over the years I have learned to be a student of my self. Learning is a continuous process and so from time to time I do a personal re-evaluation. This process has so far proved to be very important and of great use to my personal development and growth.

Make the change for new things

Don’t get stuck in the survival or maintenance modes of personal development and growth. You need to make the change for new things in order to maximise your potential.  We live in an ever changing world and the only way to keep moving forward is to embrace change. Most of us have a reputation of resisting change. I know that change comes with at a price but it must be embraced as it usually comes with different opportunities. “Your current conditions do not reflect your ultimate potential” – Anthony Robbins.

Life demands that we move with time and everyday is a new day. It is also important to be always reading and improving your skill set. Knowledge is key to success and you should always be willing to learn on a daily basis. There instances when you cannot change some situations due to various factors but you can change your mind set and behaviour. The only factor that you have control over is yourself. Many of us fail because we do not want to change our habits and behaviours to accommodate the ever changing environment.

Set your goals and stick with them

Perhaps the starting point to maximise your potential is goal setting. The importance of goal setting cannot be over emphasised. This is one of the cardinal principles in personal development and growth. When your have set your goals it is important that you stick with them and do not be distracted from achieving them. Persistence and perseverance will be key in achieving your goals. Stay focused and motivated as you pursue your goals.

You should set goals that are realistic and achievable. However, you should not limit yourself to setting goals that will not challenge your ability. You are capable of achieving more than you can image. God made you to be a solution to the world and the way I see it now the world needs more solutions than ever. For more details on goal setting please read click here.

Take action

Continuous effort! not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking your potential” – Winston Churchill. Maximising your potential requires that you take action. A journey of a thousand miles requires that you make the first step in the right direction. Regardless of what your plans are for your life just get started. Its only when you take action that you begin to realise your potential. Without taking action you will never realise your full potential and a later on maximise it. Taking action is the fuel to living your dream. Once you get started on your journey there will be obstacles that you will encounter. These obstacles should not stop you from re-focusing.

You should make a commitment to achieving your intended life’s purpose. Your success will only be achieved by taking action. Do not let procrastination still your success. Do not let failure stop you from achieving your goals. Instead make a commitment to pursuing your goals and live to enjoy the fruits of your labour. I know for a fact that everything worth while does not come on a silver platter. There is much joy in living your dream without short cuts. I always try to do things right and straight it makes my life much easier and leaves me with a piece of mind. So far so good.

I have made a commitment to ensure that this blog becomes one of the preferred sites in the areas I have fashioned it to be. This commitment is for life. I will continue to write and post articles on this site for as long as I possibly can. I know for a fact that it is helping someone out there and that is the biggest motivation for me. This site is one of my contributions to help change the world for the better.

Consult not your fears, but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you have tried and failed in, but for what is still possible for you to do” – Pope John XXIII. There are many ways that you can use to help maximise your potential, the 8 ways mentioned in both articles are just some of them. I recommend that you develop the habit of reading and have an open mind to learning. Remember that personal development and growth is not a competition but a personal journey to be walked by you alone. Bye for now and  as usual “standout tall and be counted”.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference” – Serenity Prayer

Cease to ask what the morrow will bring forth, and set down as gain each day that Fortune grants” – Horace.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called present” – Unkonwn

We are nearly coming to the end of the year and it’s about time you started reviewing what your current goals are and what you have achieved. If you did not start out with any resolutions at the beginning of the year perhaps this is the right time to evaluate what you have achieved during the year. “To be successful you must decide exactly what you want to accomplish, and then resolve to pay the price to get it” -Bunker Hunt. The only thing you have to fear is not giving 100%. There are no limitations to any of our dreams.

I believe that you do not have to wait until the end of the year to write down your goals or resolutions. You can start now and align yourself as the year progresses. If you are living your life without setting goals for your life then, you are living an aimless life, you are simply drifting along. It is very important to have a written down set of goals and work towards achieving them.

I know for a fact; that every reasonable human being has a set of aspirations they would want to achieve. You may not have realised it but even those that do not have written down resolutions have some sort of aspirations. You will agree with me that if you ask a child, what they would like to be when they grow up they will definitely tell you something. Some of the happiest of people I have come across are those that make resolutions that are written down and they are vigorously pursuing them.

Writing is a great reminder

You can do anything you put your mind to” – Unknown. Do not just rely on your memory write down your resolutions and read them very often. Writing down your resolutions keeps reminding you of what you need to achieve in a specified period. If you are serious about your personal growth you will have written down resolutions that feed into their intended life’s purpose. This also acts as a gauge to your life. You will always make your own assessment to see if you are moving towards achieving your written down resolutions or are drifting away from them and keep yourself in line.

I know for a fact that it takes a lot of discipline to live according to your written down plan. But remember that discipline is a habit that can be learned. Every day comes with its own challenges but, it is also important that we try and fit those daily challenges in to our plans. Everyone including those that are successful have challenges and the difference is that they have learned to be more disciplined by doing that which helps them more to achieve their goals. “Great minds have purpose others have wishes” – Washington Irvin.

Your written down periodical resolutions should feed into your overall intended life’s purpose. You will use your resolutions as a vehicle to drive you towards your life’s bigger picture. I can assure you that you will most likely not achieve all of your resolutions in the specified period that you have set yourself. Don’t worry about that, the most important thing is that you have them written down and this will keep reminding you of them as you review your progress.

Give yourself genuine targets

Your resolutions must be accompanied by genuine measureable targets. It will give you more motivation and encouragement as you achieve each and every resolution your have written down. I know that it is important to challenge ourselves, but these targets should be realistic and achievable. Failure to achieve your targets in a specified period should not be a limiting factor. The most important thing is to learn from your failures and keep on improving until you have achieved your plans.

Your targets could be set for review on a periodical basis e.g. weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on how often you want to monitor your own progress. When setting your targets please ensure that they can be easily measured and assessed by both yourself and an independent person that you have shared them with.

Be honest with yourself when carrying out a self assessment. Remember that only you know yourself better than anyone else. It is important to be honest with yourself before you can be honest with other people.

Reward yourself

The highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it” – John Rushkin. Life is too short. Always reward yourself for accomplishing your goals. Rewarding yourself should be done only when you have met your set resolutions for that period. This will help to keep you motivated to work extra hard as your mind will be looking forward to the rewards after wards.

Keep your rewards modest so as not to overshadow yourself with instant gratification. Look at the bigger picture of what you want to achieve and keep your mind focused on doing what you have to do to achieve your overall intended life’s purpose. Also keep in mind that you are not in competition with anyone and that success is not a destination but a joyful journey. Personal development and growth is about yourself and not anyone else.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you stay motivated and focused on the bigger picture of your personal development and growth. I have noticed that many of us like to blame our failures on other people. But remember that most of the times we are not forced to make the bad choices and decisions that have lead to failure and destruction.

I therefore, challenge you to review your years achievements whether you have resolutions for the current year or not. The fact that you are not dead means that you must have achieved something even if it is failure. If you have your resolutions written down, it is time you started reviewing them and start thinking about how strong you are going to end the year. It is also time you started thinking about making your next year’s resolutions and have them ready as you start working on them at the turn of the year. Stay blessed and remember to always “Standout tall and be counted”.

8 ways to help you maximise your potential part one

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around” ~ Leo Buscaglia. We are all blessed and posses skills and abilities that nobody else possesses quite like we do. God made each and every one of us unique and have a role to play in the world. Just like the body has different parts that make it whole the world has different components that make it complete. Those components represent you and I.

We are all gifted with unique talents and gifts, whether this is talent to show on the world stage, or on a small stage as someone who makes a difference, does not necessarily matter. What is important is for one to play their part and not deprive the world of their talents.

All these talents and abilities if not expressed are just potential. Since we are all blessed with these unique talents the question is how do we make the most of our personal potential? Let’s start by defining or rather establishing the meaning of the word “potential”. According to the oxford dictionary “potential is having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future“. if you have something then you have something to show. There is no point in showing something that you do not have it is not possible. You may not currently know what your talents are until you fully understand and explore your personality. If you have to fulfill your dreams it is imperative that you learn how to maximise your potential. The following methods might just be the answer if you have been on the quest to fulfilling your potential.

Happiness and Goals

[adrotate banner=”2″]

“Look to this day for it is life, the very life of life. In Its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence; The bliss of growth; The glory of action; The splendor of beauty; For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a Vision: But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day!” ~ From the Sanskrit. One of the greatest hindrances for failing to maximise our potential is living an unhappy life. You see, happiness is a choice. You choose either to be happy or otherwise. I have learned that happiness is an antidote for success.

From the time of great philosophers such as Aristotle happiness has been linked to the achievement of goals. That is the more reason why we find so much happiness and pleasure in the work that makes us achieve our goals. Happiness and goal setting cannot be substituted for anything if you have to maximise your potential. Living a happy life will surely motivate you into maximizing your personal potential. Click here to read more on happiness. There is no success without happiness. I think that what drives most of us to succeed is happiness. Happiness therefore is a very important driver to maximizing one’s potential.

Do it your self
“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to my fellow-creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again” ~ William Penn. Self development is a do it yourself skill and do it yourself activity. However, you look at it, if you have to maximize your potential; you have to learn how to do it yourself. I have noticed that most of us would rather not do even the easiest of tasks for fear of failure. Yet, we would rather be credited with someone else’s success. From my working experience most of us do not want to take responsibility for our actions especially if they are negative ones.

I believe that to maximize your potential you need to learn and know how get the basics done. I do not know about you but I enjoy doing most of the things on my own. It actually gives me great satisfaction and pleasure when I have accomplished something on my own. I am basically a do it yourself person. This does not mean that I do everything, no no no. I am very much aware of my skills set and know my limitations. If you are in a leading position you must learn how to delegate and supervise your subordinates. One of the greatest skill you need to posses as a leader is the skill of delegation and supervision. As a leader you must learn to give direction and motivation to your followers.

Create your destiny
“That a man can change himself, improve himself, re-create himself, control his environment, and master his own destiny is the conclusion of every mind who is wide-awake to the power of right thought in constructive action” ~ Larsen. “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not something to be waited for, but rather something to be achieved” ~ William Jennings Bryan. Maximising your potential entails creating your own destiny. We live our destiny by the little things that we do every day. Always remember that your destiny is not a destination but rather the journey that you live.

Philosophers and great thinkers have in the last centuries pondered and puzzled over the extent to which our lives are in our own hands and the extent to which they are pre-ordained. There are many thoughts and arguments but the main thought that comes out very clearly and distinct is that we can all set ourselves on the path we want by making up our minds to it. This has been proven that even in the most limiting societies we still have a free will to try. For if you are trying to achieve something then that is your first step to creating your destiny. If you are like me and are learning to maximise your potential then you are living your destiny.

Improve yourself
“Rely on your own strength of body and soul. Take for your star self-reliance, faith, honesty and industry. Don’t take too much advice — keep at the helm and steer your own ship, and remember that the great art of commanding is to take a fair share of the work. Fire above the mark you intend to hit. Energy, invincible determination with the right motive, are the levers that move the world” ~ Noah Porter. Even though nature compels us to improve, there are two opposing forces at play; to stay where we are and consolidated what you have gained or to explore what is still possible to achieve and know how far we can go.

[adrotate group=”1″]
The majority of us would rather not venture with the second force. We would rather take the safe and secure one, yet continue wondering what we might have missed out. This to me is the situation to most of us. We sit on our potential and die with it. Those who take the second risky path go on adventures seeking to maximise what they posses. This though comes at a cost and it is worth paying for. Have you ever noticed that the good things in life are not free? If you are not exploring your talents then I can assure you that you have taken the comfort zone. Get out there and explore your talents. You might just be the answer the world has been waiting for. I know the most common excuse that most of us have; I have no money or resources. If you think your idea that is good enough go for it and start living your dream.

I will end here for now. Lookout for part two in which I concluded with the remaining four ways to maximise your potential. Remember to always standout tall and be counted“.

5 Tips to increase your sales

One of the best uses of your time is to increase your competence in your key result areas” ~ Brian Tracy. At the very core of every business is a sale. Many of the strategies to increase sales offline are also applicable online, but not all of them are well adapted for online sales. On the Internet, everybody can afford to fail fast and learn from it. Better still, after years of testing and tracking what works online, people can just learn from other people’s experience and cut the learning curve tremendously. The Internet has changed how people do their business. Even small business owners are able to reach global markets inexpensively nowadays, selling anything from apparel, collectibles, to computer software, services and coaching.

The best thing the internet has done is to have your business exposed to millions if not billions of would be customers. If you have an internet business you will agree with me that your website has the potential to reach millions of people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The biggest challenge faced by most of us is getting and letting those would be customers know about your products/services and convert them to customers. It does not matter what sort of business you are promoting the need to have loyal satisfied customers is the key to life time earnings. Imagine how much a loyal and satisfied customer will give you if they keep coming and buying from you? Increasing your sales revenue cannot be done in isolation without promoting your site. In other words the more traffic your site has the more chances of increased sales. In this article I will restrict myself to increasing sales only. I will endeavour to write about how to increase traffic.

Establish a sound product/service
First things first you need to have a product/service that you are selling or marketing. If you are an affiliate program marketer like me you need to find or create a good one. Find something that flows naturally from you. Sell or promote something you enjoy doing. If it is just another affiliate program, then don’t expect to have different results. Focus on building a sound affiliate program, with the tools and materials to support affiliates to promote a program easily. After all, affiliates work like clockwork and should be seen as a team. Provide them with the right promotion tools and they will more likely promote the program. Click here learn about qualities of a good affiliate marketing program.

Give the customers an option to join the affiliate program after purchase. Satisfied customers are one of the best marketing for any business. Spread the good words through word of mouth. Best of all, they are paid just for doing that. Having a good affiliate program is the key to enhancing your sales. There are many people and businesses selling stuff out there. The best affiliate marketers are those who have their customers at heart. Offer such incentives as 30/60/90 days guarantees for an unsatisfied customers and honour your promises. A good affiliate program or product/services will ensure that you build loyal customers who can extend to buying other products that you are promoting.

After sale follow up
The hardest task in any business is acquiring the first sale. Make sure that capturing customers’ name and email addresses are the least information gathered from a sale. You need this information for future interaction with the customer. As a way of keeping in touch with my customers I have created a mailing list and send out a newsletter once every month. This helps me promote other products and services that my affiliate program offers. Most experienced marketers will agree with me that creating a mailing list one sure best way of increasing your sales. The trick however, is not to spam your mailing list. You will also need to respect people’s privacy and learn not to share private information with third parties.

This effort has been proven to decrease refund on products and increase customers’ satisfaction. Every once in a while, mention a related product that might be of interest to the customers. Write a review and provide real results. Such promotion is extremely inexpensive, but very effective in practice. The product can be anything, including an affiliate program. I know that creating a mailing list can be very hard but it is worthwhile when you have a responsive one. There are many ways you can use to create one others prefer the cheap way that is buying one rather than the hard route of creating one from scratch. I have a problem though with going the easy way when it comes to mailing lists. The chances that you will buy a non-responsive list are very high. You may end up having people unsubscribing from your list as they may feel cheated.

Apart from sending newsletters to your mailing list engage them. Especially those that have just bought something from you, find out if they are satisfied with the quality of the product; has the mode of delivery been meet; is it what they expected and many other questions that can help you improve in future. By doing so you are telling your customers that it is not just the money you are interested in but to meet and satisfy their needs. People want to be appreciated when they spend money add some freebies to their purchases. This will surely guarantee you loyal customers which will lead to an increase in your sales.

Up-sell technique
One up-sell technique that I find very effective is just before a customer check out to the payment gateway, I prompt for optional upgrade to the better, bigger, or nicer product for a fairly steep discount, do not over do this though as some people will just want to get on with what they are buying. I recommend just having one optional upgrade and nothing more. It can be very irritating and confusing when you are just about to buy something and you are receiving a lot other offers. If you have more than one optional upgrade offer you have to find a better way of promoting the other offers. Preferably, sometime after the first offer has been purchased. You risk losing your first sale if you have to subject your would be customer to a lot of offers at the same time.

I would like to mention here that we all have different abilities and techniques what may work for me might not necessarily produce the desired results for some. It is there very important that you monitor and possibly document the methods you are imploring so as to make better judgment and concentrate on the methods that produce your desired results. In affiliate marketing patience and perseverance are key to increase your sales. You should learn to treat your online business just the same way as you would treat an offline business. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to think that online businesses are different from offline businesses. For any business to succeed you need to learn the tricks of the trade.

Provide discount coupons
Don’t we all love quality and inexpensive things? Coupons urge customers to come back and shop. Promotional coupons work for both advertising and some forms of joint venture. Customers love to know that they get lower price for what they buy. Coupons make it so real and tangible. This brings me back to the earlier point I made about offering guarantees. If you know you are selling a superior and quality product you will put your head on the chopping board by offering money back guarantees. Believe me I would rather buy from someone who offers to pay me back if I feel their product is of inferior quality or does not do what they claim it should do.

Discount coupons can be provided for bulk buying or whatever, marketing reason you can give. But always remember that discounts should not eat into your profits. Only give discounts where you can afford and give them sensibly. Remember that discounts are a cost to your business that should be handled carefully. People love discounts as this provides some form of servings. Giving discounts can significantly increase your sales as people will be lured by them.

Promote with related products
There is no limit as to how this could be accomplished. Joint venture with other business or even competitors is feasible as long as it brings a win-win situation. One example would be to give away sample of other product or service as part of the whole package. As long as the sample is relevant to the customer, this promotion could only be seen as an added value instead of pure advertising. Packaging your products with many related others gives you the added advantage and spoils the customer for choice. That is why it is very important that you join an affiliate program that has multiple products/services to offer. There is no harm in enticing your customers with different other products to choose from provided they are well documented and explained. You should try to help the customer by mentioning the major differences and advantages where possible.

Always remember that you are there to offer the customer a solution to his needs. Most people will make purchases if they feel that they are being offered a solution ate the right price. Before I forget let me mention here that costing of your products is also another important aspect of your business. Do not over price your products/services. It would be wise to have a little business knowledge before you venture out in to business be it online of offline. Some people think that high prices mean more money and forget that money is made at the rate of turnover. When deciding on a price, take all other aspects in to consideration and come up with a fairly reasonable price.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out” ~ Robert Collier. There are many other tactics to increase your sales but the above tips have been proven to work again and again. Choose one at a time and take action. Success in business is not instant but a gradual process. Affiliate marketing programs can be a source of serious income if managed and nurtured well. I have below some recommended products to get you started. These are products that have been proved by me and are giving me results. Please bear in mind that levels of success depend largely on self-commitment and methods implored. Good luck and remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

5 principles to help you set your goals

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals” ~ Henry Ford. As the year comes to an end and as you prepare for the New coming Year, I thought I could just remind you and probably give you a few tips on how to set out your future goals. Goal setting is one activity that distinguishes successful people from the average ones. It is hence important in life to set your own achievable targets that are measurable. Before you set your goals, have your life’s intended purpose written down. The goals you set are aimed at helping you achieve your intended life’s purpose. For more on goal setting please read this article Goal setting Tips.

What are your strengths?
“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender that is strength” ~ Mahatma Gandhi. It is very important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are as a human being. Before you step out to set your goals know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Know what flows from you naturally. I have noticed that the best goals are those set around our strengths.

This makes life very easy and the journey to success enjoyable. You cannot set a goal as being a better mathematics teacher when your God given call is being an athlete. You will surely fail terribly. This goes to parents who are in the bad habit of deciding their children’s careers. Just because you are the one paying school fees, you have no right to force your children to study what they do not want. Or put straight, forcing them to become what you failed to be. I have two boys and all that I do is help them build on what they want to be.

My first son tells me he wants to be a medical doctor because he feels pity when he sees sick people. He wants to help them get better. The only thing I do is to help him work hard and tell him that he needs to work extra hard in sciences, be accepted in medical school. So far so good and I pray to God that he continues on this path.

Write down your goals
There is power in writing down something. One sure way of reminding yourself about your goals is to put them in black and white. Please make sure that you are the one deciding your own goals and they are not borrowed. It is much better and easier to set your own targets than copying some else’s.

The targets you set must be your own blue print that can be adjusted as you go along. Writing also acts a measure and monitor, as this helps you to review them from time and again. I find goal writing fun and interesting. A lot of things pop up that I could have easily forgotten about if I had not put them in writing. Your targets are your blue print; the final product is your white print. All successful people have their life’s intended purposes written down and broken down into smaller manageable and achievable targets.

Dream Big
“If one advances confidently in the direction of their goals and endeavours to live the life that they have imagined, they will meet with success unexpected in un common hours” ~ Henry David Thoreau. Our lives are made of what we dream about. It all starts with your mind. If you dream, small you are more likely to achieve less in life. The bigger your dreams are the bigger your requirement to dedication and the bigger your expectations are. Zig Zigglar rightly says “if you can dream it, then you can achieve it”.

Am sure that you have dreams of what you want to be. I believe that every one of us dreams of what they want to be. There is nothing wrong in dreaming big. You are only increasing your chances of success.

Imagine yourself succeeding
I would say dreaming and imagination go hand in hand. When you are dreaming you are visualising yourself living your dream. Use your imagination to keep your dreams alive. If you want to achieve your goals you need to continue imagining yourself as a success. Such positive thoughts send out strong energies that attract complimentary thoughts from people that can help us achieve what we want.

Constructive imagination means mental labour, by some considered to be the hardest kind of labour, but, if so, it yields the greatest returns, for all the great things in life have come to men and women who had the capacity to think, to imagine, and to make their dreams come true. “The cultivation of the imagination leads to the development of the ideal out of which your future will emerge” ~ The Master Key.

Pursue you goals with passion
The driving force behind your goal achievement is your desire. You must develop a burning desire that transcends everything else to achieve your purpose. That is why I said in the first place that you set your goals based on your strengths. Whatever life’s purpose you have in life always make sure that you enjoy what you do. Life’s too short to be lived miserably.

Inject some passion in thing that you do. If you are an artist’s draw like that is your last drawing. Imagine that you are going away and you want people to remember you for something you will surely give them the very best of your being. If you are in the service industry being good and just smiling at your customers makes them come back frequently. Live life with passion.

I will end with one of my favourite quotes by Thomas Jefferson ~ “nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude”. Lastly as always “standout tall and be counted”.

Personal Development Success

Your confidence is key to success

“It’s not the mountain we conquer but our selves”~ Edmund Hillary. “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without confidence” ~ Hellen Keller. Success cannot be achieved without confidence. I have learned that most successful people are the ones with confidence. You cannot set out to do something and succeed without the backing of confidence. If you luck confidence there is a very high likelihood that whatever, endeavour you have embarked on will not be a success this is surely a guarantee. In this article I will show you how to develop the confidence you need to succeed. Read 5 ways to improve your self-confidence.

It’s absolutely vital that you develop the confidence and self-belief that you will achieve your goals. Self-belief is very crucial to succeed. I am not talking about being arrogant and ignoring feedback from other people and thinking you are infallible or invisible. Am talking about having a balanced view of yourself that does not indulge in false modesty and self-pity, and an inner view that is not strong enough to be crushed and defeated when someone challenges you.

The thing is; to succeed you must develop the mind-set and confidence to achieve your goals. If you’re really are serious about succeeding you cannot afford to wallow in negative thoughts of “I am not good enough”. Here are a few tips to help you develop your confidence.

Self-talk is perhaps the most important step towards developing self-confidence. What to tell your self has more bearing than what other people tell you. Remember you are what you think. The bible says “as man thinketh so is he in his heart”.  Develop the attitude of talking positively to yourself. It helps to keep telling yourself that you can do it, you can do it. Usually when am working on a task I keep reminding myself of the benefits that accruals when a task is achieved.

I usually remind myself early in the morning that I can achieve all the tasks that I have laid down. Yes I will come across obstacles but my mind is prepared for the tasks ahead. You should try having a to do list every morning and see how that helps you towards achieving your intended goals. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” ~ the bible. This is my prayer every morning. Try personalising this saying and say how your confidence levels will be improved.

Your behaviour matters
What you think about and what you say to yourself has a profound bearing on your behaviour and on what happens to you. Your thoughts, attitudes and behaviours towards your ability to achieve your goals, have an impact on your expectation of the situation. In turn your expectation will impact on the way you behave in a given situation. People will just respond to your behaviours. “The most powerful forces of Nature are the invisible forces, so we find that the most powerful forces of man are his invisible forces, his spiritual force, and the only way in which the spiritual force can manifest is through the process of thinking” ~ the Master Key.

Am sure we’ve all known someone if not ourselves, who has been worrying about something they have to do and have constantly spoken how badly it’s going to go and when it does go badly they jump and exclaim “I knew” that would happen. You see all along they did not realise that they created their own self-fulfilling prophesy. There is power in thoughts and words. Always be mindful of what to say.

Focus on the things you do well
Take stock of your skills set and attributes that you already possess. In other words know your weaknesses and strengths and focus on improving your strengths. The idea is when you set out to do a task and accomplish it very well there is a sense of wellbeing and satisfaction. This is not to say that you should neglect to improve on your weakness. But focusing on doing the things you do better can highly improve your motivation and confidence levels.

I have listed down the some personal questions to help you identify your skill set and attributes if you are not sure of them. Write down the answers and keep on reviewing them. Make sure you answer the questions honestly.

  • What am I good at?
  • What have I received compliments and positive feedback for in the past?
  • What do people value me for? (Compare this with what you value yourself for).
  • What challenges have I overcome in the past?
  • What skills helped me to overcome the challenges?
  • What have I achieved in the past that I perhaps thought I couldn’t?

“We see things not as they are but as we are” ~ H. M. Tomlinson. As human beings I have noticed that we judge other people by our own standards. Believe me if you have set yourself a high standard that is what you expect to get from other people and nothing less.

Be inspired by other people
One of the things that has always inspired and given me confidence to succeed is by looking at and reading about other people who have made it. Find yourself some role models whom you admire and whose story of success inspires you. A role model does not necessarily have to be alive or known personally. It could be someone you have read about or someone who does not even know you. Most successful people have written books about their lives. Find some literature about them and read it.

A good role model will show you the following attributes

  • Their attitude and approach
  • Where and how they started
  • How they made the most of their abilities
  • How they handle their success
  • How they overcome challenges

Always remind yourself these too were or are human beings just like you and me. If they can make it why shouldn’t you make it?

I hope and trust that you have learned one or two things from this article. Let me end by emphasising that you cannot succeed without having self-belief and the confidence to carry you on. I have not come across a successful person without self-belief and no confidence. I challenge you set out intended purpose in life and start pursuing it with confidence and always remember to “standout tall and be counted”.
