What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The starting point for success is determination and self-belief, both of which begin in the mind.

Determination and self-belief open’s your mind to new opportunities that come your way, to do and to be anything you desire.

You are where you are because of your mindset. Your personal progress is mainly determined by the state of your mind.

The more open, your mind is the more success you can achieve. It is amazing how much success can be scored just by changing the way you think. When you change the way you think you also change the way you look at things and the way you do things.

One of the major elements of success is the openness of your mind. Let’s look at some of the things we need to do to help us change our minds.

Renew Your Mind

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” – The Bible. Your mind is the key to your success. Change the way you think and you open the door to success. By the way, there is no single formula to success.

Our minds are always clogged with dirt and need to be renewed daily.

You renew your mind by reading positive and inspirational books, listening to personal development lectures, attending workshops on personal development, and many more.

Where do you get your inspiration from; where does your help come from? My number one source is reading the Bible.

I have come to appreciate that the Bible is a wealth of inspirational stories. The most unfortunate thing is that you probably have packed it and it’s gathering dust on your book self.

Reading the bible and applying it to my everyday life has been very beneficial to my personal development.

When you renew your mind you rid it of the old thinking and bring upon it new thinking.

The mind in itself is believed to be a subtle form of static energy, from which arises the activities called ‘thought,’ which is the dynamic phase of the mind.

Mind is static energy; thought is dynamic energy – the two are phases of the same thing. Thought is therefore the vibratory force formed by converting static mind into dynamic mind.

Your mind is such a powerful tool. Studies have not yet established much power and the extent to which this power can go.

Watch Your Self-speech

The statement “there is power in the tongue” may come as a surprise to some but the statement is as true as can be.

What we say about ourselves goes deep down our subconscious than what other people say about us.

Your opinion about yourself is cardinal and should always be a positive one. Speaking positively about ourselves helps us renew our minds.

We are constantly telling the mind what to think of ourselves.

If I get promoted
I am not good enough
I’ll never amount to much
I always fail at that

Are some of the negative speeches we make about ourselves. These negative speeches come from our daily programming. You could probably list a thousand negative statements about yourself.

These, however, must be replaced by positive speeches such as;

When I get promoted
I am good enough
I’ll amount to much
Next time I will not fail at that

Positive speeches help to motivate and uplift ourselves. We must always ensure that we speak positively about ourselves regardless of the situation and circumstances.

We are also judged by what we say and eventually do. It is better to keep quiet and not say anything, especially during arguments

Focus Your Mind

When you let your mind focus through attention or concentration on any single purpose for any length of time you will see how nothing becomes impossible to achieve.

It is important that we keep our minds focused on the intended purpose of our lives.

If you have ever looked through the viewfinder of a camera, you found that when the object was not in focus, the impression was indistinct and possibly blurred, but when the proper focus was obtained the picture was clear and distinct. This illustrates the power of concentration and focusing.

Keeping your mind focused on what you want to achieve in life sends out energy to attract the necessary conditions to enable you to achieve your intended goals.

An open and positive mind allows the universe to act upon your inner thought energy and create that which you seek.

If you truly desire something so keenly that your desire is an obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it.

This is the right set of mind needed to succeed. You need to continue burning with the desire to achieve your set goals.

Focus your mind on your future, look back only to learn from your past.

It’s like when you are driving a car the windshield is bigger so you can clearly see where you are going. The review mirror or side mirrors are smaller.

Focus on where you are going.

Success is having achieved that which you determine you will do!” you determine what success is for you. It is not based on what other people are saying about you, but on what you say about yourself.

In whatever, we do or intend to achieve the mind plays a very central and critical role.

Personal change starts by changing our minds. Success comes by changing our minds. As you grow in your character always remember to “standout tall and be counted”.

Stand on your two feet

Each step upward makes me feel stronger and fit for the next step” – GANDHI. Everyone of us has a privilege to life and this comes with the great responsibility of improving our lives with the choices we make. To those of us who are striving to become whatever we have set our eyes on, the key is to be able to stand on our own two feet. A famous Chinese proverb says “a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step” in the right direction of course. Whatever, you want to achieve in life cannot be achieved without you standing on your own two feet. Get me right, yes you need people around you as you go on. You cannot succeed without people around you. I have not come across a successful person who is a loner. In this article I will try and outline the importance of standing on your own two feet.

Why stand on your two feet?

I believe that as a parent the best gift you can give to your children is the gift of freedom. Allowing them to make decisions on their own and providing guidance as they learn to stand on their own two feet. When you teach your children how to catch fish, they will surely not be dependant on you for fish. One of the biggest mistake I see in our society is that children are not taught how to catch fish at the right age. Parents will continue to spoon feed their children and not letting them learn the realities of life. I thank God for my late father who taught me to work hard for everything that I possess. I realised at a tender age that my father’s assets are not mine but his.

Again I thank God for giving me a country were we have freedom to so many things without government interference. Standing on your own two feet means freedom to me; freedom to express myself; freedom to do whatever I want to do.  We are born to be free to decide what kind of life we want to lead. Break the chains of dependency and enjoy the freedom of standing on your own two feet. Enjoy the freedom to make choices that build on your character on a daily basis. We all should learn to stand on our own in whatever, we do in life. Be it financially or socially. We were created to core exist but to be able to stand on our own feet. When you are able to stand on your own that is the time you can give the world your best.

How many of us enjoy being perpetual dependants on someone for survival? I certainly do not enjoy it. Life demands that we move from being a dependant to being dependable. We have a huge responsibility to be taken up that is to be dependable and not being a perpetual dependant. There is nothing wrong though on being dependant in our infancy and childhood. we do not just stand on our two feet from nowhere but we learn to stand on our own through our every day experiences and choices we make.

Learn from the past

Learning is a continuous process. We are learning something new everyday. It is this knowledge that we accumulate over time that helps us grow. To be able to stand on our own feet we must learn and appreciate past experiences. They say experience is the best teacher, very true. What you have learned through your own experience will stick to your mind much more than what is taught by someone else. I personally have taught my self how to use most computer applications that I know of. I have learnt through experience that most computer user applications almost the same, usually the difference is minimal. Notice that even when you are confronted with a situation that you have come across before decision making is usually based on past experiences.

Life has a lot of ups and downs. The people who have succeed in life have failed before and people who are not successful are failures. We all have come across challenging situations. Some have remained stagnant because they have accepted defeat. I have not accepted defeat and will continue to soldier on. Personal growth does not come easy. The daily experiences we encounter add to our growth. We are an expression of our exposure.

To stand on your own two feet is one of the greatest gifts you can ever receive in life. We always ensure that we are striving to stand on our own. I know that life has a lot of challenges and many of these are a stepping stone to greater growth. We choose to accept what we cannot change and instead change our inner selves, learning whatever there is to be learned. This is the only way we can grow and learn to stand on our own feet. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

Stay focused on your goals

Setting goals and targets is the easy part of personal development and self growth. One of the most difficult things to do in life is to remain focused on our set goals. This usually determines our levels of success. I always set my self targets and goals on a monthly basis but, I must mention that not until recently did I discover the formula for staying focused. It is pointless in life to set targets that we do not intend to achieve neither is it beneficial to us, it is a share waste of time and effort. Remember effort is energy use your energy wisely. A tip when setting targets is that you must make sure that you set targets that are realistic and achievable.

Why set targets?

You may ask why set targets? They help us achieve our desired dreams and goals. Life is growth and growth is change. For one to have meaningful growth one needs a properly planned and executed plan. I believe that targets are the guiding maps towards the attainment of our intended purpose’s in life. I use my targets as a measure towards the achievement of my intended goal see related article. I will be very honest with you that not all targets I have set have been realistic and achievable, but over the years I have learnt to give my self targets and goals that are actually realistic and achievable. I still have though, some targets that I have been carrying over for sometime and are yet to be attained.

Setting targets helps me gauge the level and speed at which I am moving towards the attainment of my desired goals. But remember that Personal Development is not a competition. Never compete with anyone in your quest for personal growth.

Stick to your plan

Setting targets is the easier part of personal growth, staying focused and sticking to them is the hard part. Once you have set out your intended purpose in life start working towards it. Do not wait until you have a clear picture cause it will never be clear until you start working on it. The more you work your plan the clearer it becomes. You will be encouraged to stick to your plans as you set realistic and achievable targets. It really feels good when you set your self a target and have achieved it. Yes there will be some conditions that we will encounter that are negative to us but always remember that all conditions and experiences that come to us are for out benefit. We gain strength in proportion to the effort expended.

Encourage yourself every time you drift away from your plan by reminding yourself that to live is not a blessing but to live well. “An unexplained life is not worth living” just “as an unplanned life is not worth examining”. I believe that unless we have a plan for our lives, we don’t know what we are trying to achieve. There is great reward in planning our lives and sticking to our plans.

You are unique. You ought to do what no one can do. Your destiny is not predetermined. You create your own destiny every day, not by chance but by choice. Destiny is an achievement. Yes you come across bad situations, just know that there is always good even in bad situations. We can train our selves to see good and to do good in the darkest moments of our lives.

While some people just want to get by, you must choose to thrive. You must have an understanding of contentment and happiness in order to achieve inner peace. Staying focused on your goals will ensure that you live a happy life. This is because you will be doing what you enjoy most in your life. A well lived life is not an accident. It is hard work. Be honest with yourself and know the difference between your needs and your wants. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted”.

How to build your character

Nature compels us all to move through life, but every right thinking person wants not merely to move through life like an empty bottle, but to develop, to improve and to continue the development of his thoughts to the close of physical life. Yet, most of the people have remained stagnant and wallow in poverty and live in mediocrity. This development can only occur through the improvement of the quality of the individuals thoughts and the ideals and actions that arise thereof. Every one of us has the power of will and choice, and can therefore, exercise them in the selection of the type or kind of life to lead.

Personal development is not an easy task and no one can say they have arrived at the station of personal development. It is not destination but, a continuous exercise. We can only get closer to perfection as we continue to build our selves on a daily basis. The only way to keep from going backward is to keep going forward. There are three things that you need in order to help build your character.

Knowledge of the power within

Surely knowledge is supreme and all growth is from within. The bible tells us that “without knowledge my people perish“. Perhaps the most cardinal ingredient to personal development and achievement is knowledge no one single person can do without it. You need to acquire knowledge in order that you succeed at anything you desire to do. He who desires wisdom, power, or permanent success of any kind will find it only within. Knowledge is the number one building block to achieving your personal development and success. Therefore, you need a solid foundation of knowledge if you are to succeed at any endeavor you set out to do.

Knowledge leads to skills. A good set of knowledge leads to a good set of life skills. In order to build and improve on your skills you need to build on your arsenal of knowledge. One of the best ways I do to build my knowledge is by reading the bible on a daily basis. I have come to appreciate the bible because it also offers not only a worth of knowledge but also spiritual growth. The only way not to go backwards is to keep moving forward. When you discover the power within you the sky is the limit if only you can touch the clouds.

Courage to dare

How many of us have the courage and I mean real courage to dare? Many of us fail because we have no courage. We are always saying what if I start up a business and I fail? Dare yourself and say what if I start a business and succeed. Surely we are what we think. The thoughts we harbor are reflection of what we are “as a man thinketh so is he in his heart“. You must always remember that all there is today is as a result of thought. Think about all the buildings around you. They all first existed in someone?s mind. The bible encourages us to be strong and courageous, not to be discouraged and not to be terrified.

The courage to dare is the most lacking ingredient to people?s success. Most people have developed brilliant ideas yet they luck the courage to dare implement them. We always find excuses for not implementing our ideas and thoughts. The most successful men and women have the courage to dare implement there ideas. Failure is a state of mind. You only fail when you accept failure.

The faith to do

What is faith? “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen“. Knowledge alone will not bring forth success. You need to have faith and believe in what you are doing in order to bring forth results. Faith is a powerful tool needed to achieve any level of success. Walk in faith and just start living your dreams.

If faith is so important how then do you acquire it? The bible says “faith cometh by hearing“. I have discovered that one of the best ways to develop faith is to write down your intended purpose and desire and read it to your self aloud every morning and night. The repeated reading of your life?s mission statement will be impressed on your subconscious. As your mind becomes attuned to your intended purpose and desire you will develop the faith to do.

Like I always mention in many of my articles the subject of personal development is not an easy one. I believe that the above article has helped you. A good mix of the three will definitely yield better results for you. Personal development is a life long commitment and should be taken seriously. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted“.

Even the most successful businesses started as an idea and are grown from there. When searching the inner you for business ideas ensure you write them down. Search around you for similar ideas.

I have listed below 3 things you should consider before you engage any business both online or offline. It is better to choose a business that is in line with your talents. It will be easier to development your business from your talents as these are usually things that flow from you naturally.

Work from your strengths

Identify your strengths and write them down. It is easy to work from your strengths as expanding on them will flow naturally. This is the best thing to do and will ensure that you put out your best. When searching for your strengths also write down your weaker strengths. By working to perfect the minor strengths they could just develop into your major talents. You are a better person when you know and work to improve your minor strengths. They say “success is not measured by what we have but by the many obstacles we overcome to reach it”.

After knowing your strengths both weak and major. Take the time to understand them. Go through them one at a time. It is important to take notes and refer to them time after time. This will enable you understand them even better. You could ask for opinions from closely related people but remember it is only you who knows your self better than anyone else when making the final decision.

Create a strategy

Devise a strategy. Say an easy to follow strategy. Work it every day. Persistence and patience should be by your side. You get your results not from your strategy but how it is executed. Give your self room to adjust your strategy if you are not getting the desired results. Success will come through practically applying what ever knowledge you have acquired through reading.

You need to include your long term and short term goals in your strategy. This will help you remain focused. Remember you can always adjust your strategies depending on whether they are still relevant are not giving you the desired results. Strategies have to be done for both online or offline businesses. Start marketing your business. What ever medium of marketing you choose ensure that you do not spend much money on it. There are lots of free online marketing methods on the internet. Ensure that you utilize them before going to the more advanced pay per click ones.

You need traffic

Traffic is a recipe for success. For you to achieve meaningful results you need to drive traffic to your website. More traffic means more clicks on your website = more success. One way of driving traffic is to post timeless content on your site. Free content is another recipe for building traffic. There is not so much free stuff on this site for now. I am currently working on some free content.

Begin by finding a way to create value with your content. Off course you will not start out perfectly but will continue to improve as you continue to read and post your articles. Remember the more knowledge you gain the better it is for your to write on a topic.

Persistence and patience should be by you side. Ensure that you have the patience and persistence. Success does not easily come but when it comes you will surely be glad. Your efforts will surely pay off with time. Remember to “standout tall and be counted“.

The year is slowing but surely drifting away. I thought to write and remind you of the past periods achievements if any and take stock of them.

I believe that this is one of the best ways of making prudent judgments of ourselves. What have you achieved so far out of your current period’s resolutions?

Sometime ago I thought making resolutions was a share waste of time. Believe me I was absolutely wrong and truly regret that thought.

Now for the past few years I have made it a point to always make resolutions at the beginning of every year. This has become a cardinal part of my life.

This you should train yourself to do if you are to achieve your intended purpose in life, resolutions are basically intentions that are fused into plans and planing is a cardinal part to achieving your intended purpose in life.

I encourage you make reasonable and attainable resolutions for yourself.

Monitoring Your Progress

First things first you will need to have a clearly defined and definite purpose for your life written down. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

The yardstick to achieving your desired purpose in life is to give yourself yearly targets (resolutions) broken down into quarterly, monthly or and weekly targets.

This will help you review them on a regular basis. I believe that planning is an integral part to attaining your purpose and I know that plans can be reviewed, amended and modified accordingly? Do not hesitate to modify one or two of your bench marks.

Taking Stock

man writing

To take stock you will need to have things. Example if you set out to count the number of eggs left in a tray you will need to have had eggs in place.

That is exactly same with us. To take stock of your achievements, you need to have targets that are achievable and measurable in place.

Check your targets for specifics say your goal for the year was to read 36 books. Have you achieved this target; if not how far are you from achieving your target; what impediments are you facing from being on track?

Write down your results i.e your answers to every goal you had set out. Give yourself a score of 1-10 honesty is key here. 1 for poor and 10 for excellent results.

Review your results fairly giving a comment on each answer including the ones were you scored high. Be very honest with yourself. Remember we are to account for all our abilities including the weak ones.

Make an analysis of your results especially how you can improve on the below average scores. If need be, change your approach in the coming year/period.

Remember to always write down what you intend to improve on. Give your previous year’s resolutions to someone who knows you better for an independent assessment.

Although I strongly recommend that their opinion should be taken with caution. Ultimately you are the best judge when it comes to knowing yourself.

Also take note of the ones on which you scored high, I believe that there is always room for improvement. You will need them to consolidate on your way to achieving your definite purpose in life.

Give yourself a pat on the back for the achievements good or bad. At least you have started moving somewhere. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP.

Next Period’s Resolutions

Why do you want to make resolutions for the coming period? My answer is to help me in the planning of how I can move closer to achieving the defined purpose for my life.

The resolutions will act as a meter or gauge I can use towards attainment of my life’s intended purpose.

After analysing and summing up last year’s achievements set out and plan for next year or the coming period. Write down specific targets with a specified time frame.

Remember to incorporate last years failed targets into the current ones. This will help to making you work even harder as you will now be carrying a back log. Over your stronger abilities demand even more so as to consolidate on them.

Be very realistic to give yourself attainable targets as this will keep you confident and motivated every time you achieve them.

Break down your yearly targets say to quarterly, monthly etc, and ensure that you set periodical reviews.

If you feel you need to adjust please do not hesitate to do so keep in mind that you are not competing with any one. You are only pushing yourself to achieving your intended defined purpose in life.

After putting down your plans for the year, set out and commit them to Gods hands for direction. God will surely come through for you if you call on him. He is a faithful God.

In your endeavors to achieving your defined purpose always put your creator first, he has the blue print of your existence.

Persistence and patience should be your driving force to achieving your desired purpose in life. Lastly HAVE FAITH IN WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Good luck. Remember to always “standout tall and be counted” in everything that you do. Revised on 31/05/2021.
